What do you look for in bjd clothing?

Jun 5, 2012

    1. Does fit matter more than style? vice versa?
Both, I think. If I can fudge the fit a bit with a pin or two, that's ok. I have a lot of slim girls and often have to do that trick. But the style needs to work for the doll, and prints and buttons and the like need to be in scale.

Do you have lower/same/higher expectations for craftsmanship of doll clothing compared to human clothing? Lower I suppose, but not by that much. It's harder to sew for such a small scale, and I expect the clothes to be as finished as possible.

Do you prefer very unique pieces vs. casual pieces or vice versa?
I like both. Basic casual pieces are great for taking dolls traveling. I've lost bits of an elaborate outfit on a trip before, no fun! But I also like dressing my dolls, especially the girls, in elaborate fancy outfits.

Would you buy an intricate piece of bjd clothing even if it is difficult/confusing to put on the doll?
Oh yes, I have. It's amusing to figure out that one bit that looks off is actually upside down. But once I figure it out, I generally remember how things go. A friend of mine has this awesome dress set from a Japanese seamstress that came with like a 10 page booklet of instructions and a zillion pieces. Lucky she can read Japanese, it'd take me days to figure out, lol!

Do you prefer clothing that is easy to put on and easy to care for?
I wouldn't say I prefer it, but it is nice. The smaller the doll, the easier I like the clothes to go on.

      How much does price matter?
I don't mind spending a lot on a quality piece of clothing or outfit for my doll. Most expensive sets have loads of pieces you can mix around, anyway. I've found several independant seamstresses that do great, detailed dress sets for under $100. I think the most I'd spend on an outfit would be around $200 or so.

    2. I usually have a very specific style in mind, as well as a strong attention to detail. I'd only buy something that I couldn't (or didn't have the patience to) make like shoes or really intricate dresses. And THEN size comes into play and then price.

    3. What I look for in doll clothes:

      1) Quality. When it comes to clothing quality is very important. I've had doll shoes break on me...the zipper broke. Welp, that's the end of those boots.

      2) Volks. I have two Volks girls, a DD and SD and I find buying from Volks very safe as I can be assured whether outfits will fit both my girls or just one. Plus, I like how Volks releases a great mix of styles that I love.

      3) Price. I don't purchase doll shoes because of how expensive they are. I very rarely purchase doll clothes because of how expensive they are, but if I really like something and it fits both my dolls then I go for it.

    4. I mostly look for quality, my dolls are all about the looks, so only the best will do :3 They r better dressed than i am!

    5. I think for me the biggest thing is style. The clothing has to fit the image of their personality I have in my head. I think being well made is another thing that is important. Some outfits are really expensive, and I don't want them falling apart after a short time of use.

    6. Does fit matter more than style? vice versa? Both play a part. Though fit is just slightly more important. If I find something I like, but not in the right size, I will looks for the next best thing. No sense buying something nice that won't fit my dolls XD

Do you have lower/same/higher expectations for craftmanship of doll clothing compared to human clothing? I suppose... in both cases, I expect clothes that are of high price to be nice and well crafted.

Do you prefer very unique pieces vs. casual pieces or vice versa?
      Casual pieces.

Would you buy an intricate piece of bjd clothing even if it is difficult/confusing to put on the doll?
Most likely not, unless the clothing was suitable for a character.

Do you prefer clothing that is easy to put on and easy to care for? I don't own any, but I can say I would rather have my dolls' clothes to be easy to put on and care for. The dolls need enough TLC, so I'd rather get a break when it comes to caring for what they wear.

How much does price matter? In a way it matters... in a way it doesn't. If the piece is nice and it's something I would certainly want for my doll, I'd be willing to pay the price for it. However, as I previously mentioned, I expect an expensive piece to be well crafted. No clothing of any kind is worth anything if it is not crafted well enough to suit its purpose.

    7. Hi there, sorry if i am repeating any of the "?"-ons...but couldn't find any info yet...Can anyone suggest a maker/website for Fantasy, historical, or Steampank clothing for BJD-s? I am waiting for my first doll...and in the meantime wanted to see if i can find some clothing for her...thanks a bunch,,,,

    8. I look for clothing that looks liek people clothes. I don't know much about fashion, ect, nor doe I sew myself. (Okay sometimes I use a needle, thread, and fabric to try to make things but it's all pretty horrific).

I look for some things when shopping online though-- buttons to the proper scale of the doll, fabric that looks nice, hemming like I see on clothing I would by for myself. In items that are lined for people like coats I look for lining in the doll's clothing. When I've purchased well the items I wind up with just feel right in hand, solid and like 'real' clothes that are of quality.

I would not mind clothing that was cheaper and of slightly inferior quality... but 30 bucks for a button up shirt that looks kinda tack or 20 more for one that looks sharp and snazzy? At the higher prices I might as well go for the very lovely item, as it's not like I'm saving a lot when I don't.

    9. I like amazing spanking awesome uber-datailed fantasy outfits or dandy and the alike.

      I don't really like dolls in casual or normal outfits;

    10. I wish I could sew. I don't like most clothes that are out for BJD boys, and the clothes released for the yoSD lines are laughable sometimes. (YoSDs are kids! Give us some cute kid clothes! Gosh.) Because every doll I own has a different style, finding doll clothes for them is difficult. Doll clothing lines released from companies tend to work with a limited set of styles and sometimes share the same designer, so we're left with little options in the long run.
      I'm currently going through a wardrobe problem, as my next doll is going to be an iplehouse, and I can't find a jacket for him for the life of me. -_-;

Does fit matter more than style? vice versa?
Style is a huge thing for me. My main issue with clothes on the market today (for dolls, anyway) is that the options we have just aren't fashionable enough. I wish I could sew... it's my major weakness. I can't sew at all -- not even a hole in a pair of pants!

Do you have lower/same/higher expectations for craftmanship of doll clothing compared to human clothing?
Yes and no. I'm impressed with clothing that is similar to human clothing... for example, I am in love with TTYA's pants because they resemble real jeans to me. (they're really gorgeous, and well worth the price.) I do expect them to look nice, though. I don't like lazy, thrown together shirts or dresses, and I'll avoid those.
Even for my monster high dolls, I'm picky about craftsmanship. The clothing released for them is horrible. So... I buy them nice stuff off of Etsy, because those outfits are made with love. <3

Do you prefer very unique pieces vs. casual pieces or vice versa?
Back on my answer to question number one, I like casual pieces the best; however, I find that casual for dolls translates into Goth, Stripes, Black, Leather, and casual Lolita. Considering that a lot of the outfits come from places like Japan and Korea and China, all places with fun and gorgeous casual outfit designs, I just don't understand why the dolls have such limited options. :( When I browse through human clothes on places like yesstyle, I think, "So many of these outfits would be so cute on a doll!"

Would you buy an intricate piece of bjd clothing even if it is difficult/confusing to put on the doll?
Yes, so long as the end result looks good.

Do you prefer clothing that is easy to put on and easy to care for?
Depends on the price. If I buy something from Dollmore, for example, I don't expect the outfit to last long or hold up to any washings. But if I buy something nice, like from etsy, I expect it to last a long time. I like clothing that is easy to put on and take off -- the most complicated thing I've had to do so far is remove doll heads, and that isn't a problem.

      How much does price matter?
It matters greatly. I wouldn't buy anything that is more than the cost of a human version. If I'm buying myself a pair of jeans for $60, I'll buy my doll a pair of jeans for that price, too -- the big reason being, I'll be buying three pants for myself, as I'm a human and I wear them down, but my doll isn't going to be actively wearing his jeans down, so one pair of nice pants is fine.

In the end, I am very picky about doll clothes. They cost as much as people clothes do sometimes, so I want them to look good and have personality. However, I admire people who can do this for a hobby, let alone as a living... I would love to learn how to sew, how to make patterns and cute outfits for my dolls. *_* People with that skill and talent are amazing!

    11. Does fit matter more than style? vice versa?
They both matter. If I already have some old clothes that fit a new doll, I may have the doll wear them a while. However, I won't buy ill fitting clothes (unless ill-fitting FITS the character) or clothes that don't work with the style I want for the doll.
Do you have lower/same/higher expectations for craftmanship of doll clothing compared to human clothing?
I expect the same in that I expect the quality to vary based on price and other factors.

Do you prefer very unique pieces vs. casual pieces or vice versa?
For which doll? heh For Hilary, my pseudo-rococo man, I prefer unique pieces. Most of his pre-made clothes are from Dollheart, but he usually wears custom outfits designed for him. On the other hand, my poor lost Hoshang usually wears casual clothes and things that used to belong to others. It varies by doll.

Would you buy an intricate piece of bjd clothing even if it is difficult/confusing to put on the doll?
As long as it did fit, yes I would.

Do you prefer clothing that is easy to put on and easy to care for?
Well, it would be nice if all clothing was like this, but it's not. I prefer such clothes for certain dolls, but others (like Hilary) usually wear larger, somewhat complex pieces that may be a bit fragile.

      How much does price matter?
It matters a great deal. That is not to say I will not spend much because I will, but I have to think the outfit is worth it. There are some items that I like and think are nice, but I don't think are worth their price. I usually find this with limited items that are expensive just because they are limited. Usually, if I am willing to spend over $200 on an outfit, I will just commission something to suit my doll.

    12. Does fit matter more than style? vice versa?
They both matter equally. There's no sense in getting something lovely that none of my dolls can fit into, but neither do I see the point of buying something that is a perfect fit, but doesn't suit their characters. There is one exception, an AS outfit I love so much that I have invented a character to match. I will only choose from AS dolls to shell that character, so I can ensure a perfect fit. Yeah, I'm somewhat weird :sweat With shoes, fit matters greatly. I can't stand shoes looking far too big or wide!

Do you have lower/same/higher expectations for craftmanship of doll clothing compared to human clothing?
Higher, because I'm big on details. When I buy clothes for myself I look for fit and comfort, but I do not check every seam or button to see if it's sewn on right. With dolls clothes it bugs me a lot if not enough work has gone into the details. These clothes are expensive and if I'm going to have stuff with crooked seams or visible blobs of hot glue, I can just make some myself. And I hate clothes that stain. I just can't understand how you would sell something labeled for BJD's without making sure it doesn't stain first. One of the reasons I love Nine9style so much, I can leave my dollies in their darkest stuff with no problems whatsoever. For shoes I expect about the same as for me, but I ask a lot of human shoes anyway ;)

Do you prefer very unique pieces vs. casual pieces or vice versa?
Casual, but only because my dolls are supposed to be real people and I find it very unlikely that they will wear intricate Lolita or historical stuff. However, I do love all of that stuff as well and once I've finished shelling all my OC's and clothing them, I might splurge on historical outfits for all of them too so I can put the whole group in another century without changing their characters and relationships that much... But this is a big splurge and very longterm, since we're talking about 10-12 SD-sized dollies of which I currently onky have 2.

Would you buy an intricate piece of bjd clothing even if it is difficult/confusing to put on the doll?
Yes. If it's that hard to put on, they will just have to stay in it a bit longer.

Do you prefer clothing that is easy to put on and easy to care for?
If it reaches the effect I'm going for, it won't matter that it takes more effort to put on or care for. But if possible, I much prefer hands and feet to stay on!

      How much does price matter?
I will usually search for stuff I like first and look at the price tag later. If that completely shocks me, I'll look for a cheaper alternative, but if there isn't one then yeah, I'll take a deep breath and just go for it. I will usually try to save on shipping though and I'll do a lot of research to find out as much as possible about the fit of obscenely expensive stuff. I have a pair of 3/4 jeans on order for about $45, which I think is a lot, but it's perfect, looks like a human pair and will fit perfectly on my KDF since it's from Luts.
And obviously if it doesn't work out I will try to sell it.

    13. Does fit matter more than style? vice versa?
I feel that both fit and style are important! If an outfit does not physically fit the doll, nor does the style "fit" the doll's character, then it's kind of pointless to have such an outfit. For example, I have many MSD clothes, but some of them are for one of my boys and the others are for another of my boys - some items they can share, but it is rare that their styles cross over.

Do you have lower/same/higher expectations for craftmanship of doll clothing compared to human clothing?
When I first got into the hobby, I had no idea that so much detail and craftsmanship went into making doll clothing, so at first quality wasn't a big deal for me. However, knowing what I now know, I wouldn't expect doll clothing to be of lesser quality than human clothing.

Do you prefer very unique pieces vs. casual pieces or vice versa?
I generally really like the look of unique pieces, but they tend to be very expensive so I shy away from them. Casual clothing suits my dolls better, regardless.

Would you buy an intricate piece of bjd clothing even if it is difficult/confusing to put on the doll?
      Difficulty to wear isn't really a factor for me - if there's a will, there's a way!

Do you prefer clothing that is easy to put on and easy to care for?
This doesn't really matter to me - so long as it looks good on my dolls, then I'm happy.

      How much does price matter?
Price is a big factor for me. If something is too much, then I simply won't buy it - even if that means settling for something that doesn't look as good.

    14. I love victorian, 18th century, elegant clothing. So, definitely not casual! Unfortunately, I have both the problem of price and of availability. I just have trouble with the idea of paying 1/2 to more than I paid for my doll on his clothing. They are just clothes! I know they take a lot of work and all but... well, it usually seems pretty ridiculous to me, when the doll clothes literally cost the same amount as human clothes ^^;; Also, availability is really an issue because I like tiny dolls. Really nice quality clothes seem to be hard to find in small sizes. So far, these issues mean my doll has no clothes! If I manage to find a really nice male victorian suit for my YOSD size doll, I will be willing to shell out some cash... but not $200! My doll cost $200... I just can't do it.

As for being difficult to put on... well, as long as I don't have to take off a piece of their body to put it on, I'm OK with it. I'm not willing to take off a head or hand, etc... mostly because I have no idea how to do it or trust that I could get it back on!

    15. None of my dolls have a professionally made outfit, that's how picky I am about doll clothes. I don't like most of the styles available for MSDs so it's up to me to make their clothes. That's the worst thing about this hobby for me because I'm a failure at sewing. Thankfully I found out it's not as hard to find clothes I like for MSD boys as I thought it would be,so I can have at least one decently dressed doll when I get my boy I ordered.
If I could find a dress I really liked,I wouldn't care if it was complicated to put on,but I don't know how much I would pay. Sometimes I think it would be worth any price just to find the perfect outfit.

    16. Price and quality. It needs detail, it has to be to scale, and not look like doll clothes...
But it still can't be overly expensive, and should be versatile.

Sometimes it's harder to find quite what I want for my boys.

It took me ages to find the perfect shirt for one of my planned dolls, and I bought it on the spot when I did find it.

I can sew if I am following a pattern, and not fighting with the fabric... but scaling patterns down to doll size, and getting those tiny details just right, are a problem. I do have one pair of jeans I made from a torn up pair of my own jeans... they fit well, but they lack the detail I like.

    17. Fit and style matter the same amount, and they matter very much. The style I prefer isn't totally unique, but it certainly isn't casual either. It's a bunch of fancy foppy stuff, but I like it. Complicated and fiddly bits are part of the package sometimes, which I don't mind and would certainly buy, but I do prefer something that is easy to clean for when it inevitably come in contact with some dirt or, more likely, dust. Accuracy and quality over ease.

I hold doll clothes to a much higher standard than human clothes. If I'm going to be spending money on expensive clothing (no matter if it's a $6 pair of socks or a $100 three-piece set) that I can't wear, it had better be worth every penny. Money-wise, I'm extremely frugal, but if the outfit is practically perfect in every way (to borrow Mary Poppins' phrasing), I wouldn't mind indulging if I could pull it off.

Edit: Perhaps it'd be easier to say that I'm a perfectionist and want it all.

    18. Does fit matter more than style? vice versa? Yes, fit does matter than style.
Do you have lower/same/higher expectations for craftmanship of doll clothing compared to human clothing? I have the same expectation as I do with my own clothes. The doll clothing is worth about the same *sometimes more* then my own clothes. -_-''
Do you prefer very unique pieces vs. casual pieces or vice versa? I prefer casual types of clothing on dolls.
Would you buy an intricate piece of bjd clothing even if it is difficult/confusing to put on the doll? I honestly wouldn't. If it's hard to put on, chances are I won't buy it.
Do you prefer clothing that is easy to put on and easy to care for? I prefer clothing that's easy to put on.
How much does price matter? If you spend $5 on a t-shirt, chances are that the quality isn't as good as those other t-shirts that would go for $15+. In the end, I would spend money on items that would last a long time, even if it means spending a whole load of money.

    19. I lean toward more realistic and youthful styles. I don't own a doll yet but I've been looking and studying . Quality is also imprtant. Fitting would be enough like altering a real human's clothes that I'm less concerned about that

    20. First off, I think that the style and the fit both mater about the same, but I would chose stye over fit. I expect more for the quality in doll clothes than in human, probrobly because if you buy a pair of shorts for your doll and it costs 20 dollars, when you can buy a pair for yourself for only like 10 dollars, you expect the shorts to be good quality. For style I prefer casual with a bit of a unique flair. I would buy a cool peice of clothing even if it were hard to put on, but I do like it better when the clothes are east to put on. For me price varies, if I think the quality is worth the price then I will get it, but if it is a rip off then I won't buy it.
