What do you prefer: Personality first or Sculpt first?

May 25, 2016

    1. Sculpt first then personality. It's more fun for me to feel like I am "getting to know" them rather than imposing ideas on them. However, if I am trying to re-shell a character out of one doll and into another then it's personality first.

    2. Sculpt first - I find a sculpt that I like and the personality forms from there :)

    3. OP here:

woah! thanks for all your replies guys!

    4. I kind of run into this even if I plan via OC first. Like I think a sculpt will work well for an OC I have their style and what not but then when it comes down to customizing and all that, the sculpt just doesn't agree. I do keep those guys though and the character comes to me from them. So I guess I do a little bit of both now haha

    5. I'm more a 'personality first' person, since I mostly collect dolls to embody characters... but with Vince, he didn't really become himself until after I got him, so even though I'd had an idea of who he was beforehand, in a lot of ways, he was 'sculpt first'*... and the next doll I hope to save up for and get after I finish moving house is probably going to develop a lot the same way... I fell in love with her sculpt and while I have an idea of a character that she could be... she might wind up being someone else entirely when I get her.

*the really weird thing, though, is that I got Vince during an event, and the event head that came with him was absolutely personality first, like... I knew exactly who he had to be, even if he wound up being way too cute and little to match my pre-existing drawings of the character. And yet in all these years, Moz the personality-first event head has never gotten his own body. (then again, his character doesn't actually need one)

    6. First comes the sculpt, then I make up a personality that might fit.

    7. My dolls' personalities form only a little while after they arrive, so it's definitely sculpt first for me! :3

    8. I feel you on this. A lot of my characters, I know exactly how they look. But lately I've been running across that a sculpt I originally thought would fit them perfectly doesn't. Lately my idea of my OC's have been lenient in fitting my grail dolls as well haha

    9. I don't have my first doll yet, I'm actually in the process of getting her!!! But for me I looked at sculpts and found one I adored and realized that she was perfect for one of my characters!! So it was kind of half and half!!!!

    10. With my first boy, I found the sculpt first and then developed his personality while waiting for him to arrive. The same happened with my second. After that, I had characters ready before I began looking for sculpts. I have ideas for how my characters look and then find sculpts that match (or as close as possible) what I see in my head.

    11. Usually the character, including the personality, comes first. I know what they look like and who they are far before I go looking for a sculpt that fits what I imagine. There have been two instances where I had an event head or doll coming to me and I wasn't sure who they were at first, but after receiving them, I found they fit one of my characters pretty well.

    12. It depends, sometimes I see a doll on the mp that catches my absolute fascination and they have become their own character. (I blame 5star doll yosds lol) Other times I've had a character in mind and have looked carefully for the right sculpt to fit.

    13. It's sculpt first for me. Whatever catches my eye. I don't have planned characters. I love to draw and write, but I don't use dolly representations. Dolls are, themselves to me. I like the mystery and don't try to "get in their heads" too much. I sometimes imagine what they might be thinking or make up little back stories, but they don't get fleshed out into much more. I don't know if that makes any sense.

    14. Character first. Otherwise it's just a pretty thing with no personal significance to me.

That being said I've had awful luck with shelling characters in the past, where the doll takes over the character. So I sold all of the dolls and vowed that I would ONLY get dolls if they 100% resemble the character, like, the second I see their photo I gasp and go "thats [_____]!"

That basically means that I'm probably only gonna own a small handful of dolls, but that's fine by me.

    15. Character first most of the time my first boy definitely developed a character without me even trying he was supposed to be the brother of the main character but he totally took on a life of his own

    16. Mostly I've fallen for a sculpt, and then come up with a character to fit it. I have three who I chose to fit fan characters, but only two kept the name, one the appearance, and all have deviated from the original character. There was a fourth who was meant to be fan based, but as soon as I got her- blank, wigless, and undressed-she insisted she was someone else entirely. They are all still evolving and developing as characters.

    17. For me, it's about the sculpt first over the personality, mostly because I don't have any OCs that would really work as a BJD that's currently available (mostly because I like anthro-types, and most BJDs are just cats or bunnies if they're anthro).

    18. Sculpt only, I don't get the character thing. I find that no matter the size, there is a particular type that I prefer.i also find that certain companies that one doll that I lik, generally will have several others. I keep an online list of the sculpts I like, including the ones that are no longer available that I hope to find second hand.

    19. For me It's finding a sculpt for the personality. It is hard tho since I think most doll sculpts have no personalities that match my needs. I think Volks male dolls (the most mature types) and Venitu have perfect sculpts but they are also so expensive!

    20. I always have a character in mind when picking a doll but the appearance of the doll usually mixes with the character and I'm able to create a new personality.
