It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

What do you prefer: Personality first or Sculpt first?

May 25, 2016

    1. It's not a preference in my case. I simply can't figure out a doll's personality without the sculpt, and a great deal of trial and error. Even though they're supposed to be shells of OCs, none of them want to stick to plan.

    2. All of the dolls I currently own were sculpt first.

There is a character that I've tried to shell, but I've found it so hard to find the proper sculpt for her. This is a character that has existed in my head for over 20 years now. I know exactly what she's supposed to look like and I'm pretty picky about it.

    3. When trying to sort my wishlist dolls by priority, I sort of do both. If I don't like the look of a sculpt then it'll be hard for me to really 'play' with it, but if inspiration doesn't his me for a particular face then I run into the same issue. The sculpts that give me immediate inspiration are the ones that get priority. Fortunately, doing my own faceups gives me a lot of flexibility.

    4. The character has to be created first so I know all their traits, then I can find the right sculpt to match.

    5. I noticed that I always try to plan a character but get sidetracked by new sculpts I see. But if I do buy the beautiful sculpts without first having a character in mind I always lose interest in them after awhile because they don't mean anything to me. Does that make sense?

    6. sculpt first, i'm awful at making characters so i just go with whatever catches my eye.

    7. My dolls generally are modeled after existing RP characters, so the personality comes first.

That being said, I have had dolls that I bought solely for the sculpt.

    8. For me, it's sculpt! I don't have any stories or anything to go along with my dolls, so it isn't about shelling characters for me. I buy dolls that I think are beautiful, and then I decide their personalities and names etc from then on!

    9. Sculpt first for me. I buy dolls only when I'm in love with the sculpt, since I don't come up with any stories or OCs. I then slowly come up with names and personality/settings while I wait for the doll to arrive or when I start playing with him.

    10. I always go sculpt first. It's hard for me to figure out characters, so I just make them up once I can hold the doll and play with them.

    11. I feel like I do a mix of this. I guess technically I picked my first two dolls sculpt first, but I don't think I would've been so drawn to them if the company hadn't already given them a story that I loved. It was the story combined with the sculpts that made me fall in love. Of course, I feel like I'm learning new things about their personalities every day now.

Other dolls I either have or consider getting are going to shell my OCs, so in those cases character comes first. In other cases, I see a doll and want it badly though I don't have a story for it yet. But usually those times I come up with a name and story for the doll long before I buy it, so when it comes I'll already have a lot about it figured out. I don't think I could just buy a pretty sculpt and wait to develop the doll's personality until it arrives.

    12. For me, the doll has to grab my attention, and sometimes that even means I end up creating a whole new character.

    13. For me, I've actually done both. My first doll, Tamper, I had a character in my hed and @goilat28paces looked for a sculpt to match that. My second, unnamed doll, I just fell in love with the DZ Merlin head and am now working on a character to fit it

    14. Sculpt first, usually. I have so many characters, and I would rather keep them in my head than shell them all. Though I have had dolls inspire a character and then chosen another sculpt that ended up fitting it better.

    15. I usually have a bunch of sculpts chosen that I already like and then will assign a personality to the sculpt I think fits it best.

    16. Both. I have a character in mind, and when I choose the sculpt who fits the best to my OC. But sometimes, I fall on a wonderfull sculpt who give me inspiration for create a character.

    17. Idk honestly, I think it depends on the day for me.

I like to have some idea of what I want to look for and some idea of a character I'd like to shell, and then find the perfect sculpt somewhere, and then build from there.

It happens either way, but it's easier to build around a sculpt for me. I find one and think "This is beautiful! I see Brown hair, a leather jacket, etc."
Finding a shell for an existing character is more difficult, I usually have a very clear picture of what I want in my head and finding a doll with all the nesecary features is quite difficult, especially since plenty of them are some sort of fantasy.

    18. Sculpt first because I'm not that kind of person who creates characters and stories, I just like having cute dolls and take pictures sometimes

    19. i always go for sculpt first. the sculpt usually suggests some sort of personality for me, but i won't really know what it is until i have finished the faceup and chosen eyes and wigs. my dolls all seem to have a mind of their own and tell me who they want to be, how they want to dress rather than vice versa. ... a sentiment i would have found extremely odd before i started collecting dolls!

    20. Sculpt first for me. I usually look to my dollies to tell me their story, and from there a personality is slowly fleshed out and they take form. :)
