What do you prefer: Personality first or Sculpt first?

May 25, 2016

    1. I prefer sculpt first. That way, I can figure out a personality.

    2. Depends, if I see a doll sometimes it sparks a personality, who they are in my head. Other times I have something in mind that I then go hunting for, currently i've been seeking the perfect head of an OC, but it's been elusive.

    3. I pretty much create a character based on a sculpt I fall in love with. I recently snatched up a doll leaves Noir with an AMAZING face up, upon seeing him I just immidiately had a perfect character for him in mind. It's always like that for me.
Though I do understand it being the other way around, I feel like it would be too hard for me to manage, also because I currently do not have the funds to always buy super expensive dolls.

    4. It varies! I have lists of various OCs and other characters that I found sculpts that would fit them, though some of them are more expensive. However, there are other sculpts I want that, if I actually get them, I'd come up with separate characters for them altogether. I will say, though, that my first (and currently only doll) is one of the second category, so... That might say something?

    5. Personality always comes first for me. If I can't figure out a complete personality and styling for a certain sculpt I like I won't buy it.
It seems I can't bond with a doll without doing this. And even when I have done it, if the doll "doesn't like" the personality I will have problems to bond with it and end up changing it and then selling it if I can't get it right.

    6. I usually look for face i like, :)

    7. Sculpt first
When you fall in love with the look . You can create your own story line . His / her look , personality and the background setting

    8. Like many others, definitely sculpt first....for the most part. I do have characters I would like to shell, but between their skin colours being nearly impossible to get for 99% of companies and the fact that they're mature male characters and I don't collect SD sizes, those are on the backburner unless I manage to snag a few rare out-of-print MSD/YoSD mature male sculpts.

In the meantime I just like collecting some of the cool, unique sculpts out there! <3

    9. I like picking a shell for a specific character even if I have to mod it to look accurate:3nodding:

    10. Scuplt first. I love the 'getting to know' period when my doll arrived. Sometimes they even adapted to me. I have one doll that when he first came, I felt like he's a crybaby. His face looks like he always crying. But after 3 months passed, It's like he know that I don't like a crybaby so he never make a face that I feel like he's crying ever again and turned into a very cute boy instead. I'm sorry if it sound weird, I treated my dolls as little humans.

    11. I guess sculpts are the only reasons I choose to create my OCs since you can transform sculpts into any personalities you want, usually through face-ups. A default sweet-looking boy sculpt can turn out looking all swag if you give it a personality :) So yeah, it's sculpt first for me.

    12. I guess a mixture of both. I've chosen sculpts based on the personalities and physical traits of my characters, but once they arrive and I have the doll in hand, their personalities get soft adaptations and adjustments based on the "character" of the doll, if that makes sense. The fact that all of my dolls are secondhand probably plays a role, too, but I really like the interplay/balance of sculpt and personality that influences their characters and how they interact with each other.

    13. I don't really make elaborate personality profiles for my dolls (yet), so in my case the sculpt is what comes first for me. When browsing through doll stores my train of thought is more like "wow, they have a really lovely face" and if I buy them their overall look is more of a trial and error type of thing of trying to find their perfect look.

    14. Sculpt first for me. I make characters after I have the visual I want.

    15. character and personality first! after that I look for the doll that most resembles this

    16. Sculpt first...Sometimes the character I imagined has to change after the head is painted anyway, because they end up different than I imagined.

    17. I've only purchased two dolls thus far.

I purchased the first one with a very specific personality in mind. The second, I purchased primarily because I fell in love with the sculpt, and happened to have a vague notion of a character that would suit it. Surprisingly, I think the second one was the more exciting purchase for me. I've been writing as long as I can remember, so I love all of my characters, but ultimately a doll is a tangible, visible, physical object, so I want it to be a sculpt that would really speak to me with its sheer beauty all on its own, even if I didn't have a character in mind.

It does make shopping for dolls really grueling though! I want a third doll to round out my collection (I'm telling myself that's my limit), but I haven't quite found the one that just jumps out at me yet!

    18. Since my dolls are based on OCs, I go with personality. The sculpt has to reflect my character or I won’t be that interested. Sometimes a doll comes along that I wanna create a new character for though :D

    19. Personalty first since the sculpts will be linked to core characters. Fortunately three out of four manage to synch well with their sculpts. The good part is that the right sculpt helps to add on to the character. One of my older character decided she likes her teenage sculpt and "manifest" as the late teens version of herself.

The one that didn't synch so well, I end up not doing much with him.

I still have a lot male sculpts I like, but I don't have a distinctive enough character pilot it and make him fit in with the exisiting crew

    20. Both. I have several OCs I'm trying to shell, but in the midst of searching I fall in love with sculpts and their characters and names just come to me. My grail doll is a cp delf soony, in lieu of getting her I went for the mnf event head that came out. (Because it's hard to find the cp version in my budget range.) During my search for a mnf elf soony event head (juri14) I came across a juri13 in the marketplace and knew instantly I had to have her, her name was Tea Rose and she was a fairy princess who was banished for having a relationship (friends, but each have feelings, no confessions) with someone she wasn't supposed to. But then fell in love with the modern world, takes pictures (currently looking for a Polaroid camera and a snap n shoot in scale) and that she was rooming with my other OC who's a lazy gaming Oracle that eats cup ramen and chips because she's too lazy to cook. Lol. Some of my OCs are based on the inspiration I get from finding sculpts that just bring out my best characters. And yes her friend from the other world follows her and they end up living together. But he ends up just being a maid for the two gamer girls most of the time. Mostly because Tea Rose is just as lazy and fell into the cup ramen and chips routine too. And they're all in my wizard's fanfic storyline. Which has a dozen other OCs. So... yeah. Sorry for the run on story tangent!!! °w°¡
