What doll would you sell your crew for?

Jul 23, 2021

    1. Is there a doll out there that doesn't REALLY fit in with your crew, but you love them/ they are your grail? Would you buy that doll and keep them separate from your crew, or would you sell your crew so the aesthetic would not be ruined? If that doll is expensive, would you sell your crew to be able to afford them? Basically, how far would you go with your pre-existing crew to be able to own the doll of your dreams?

    2. I would absolutely never sell all my dolls to buy another. No doll is worth the rest of my dolls to me. If the doll is worth that much money wise, I would save up. If it's a time issue, that sucks but I will live without whatever doll it is. I adore my dolls and I wouldn't give them up just because I found some other doll I like.

Aesthetic wise, if the doll doesn't match, welcome to the club. None of my dolls match other than my two bluefairies with almost the same face. My dolls aren't characters so there's no reason for them to match.

    3. I’ve thought about this very question, quite a bit actually. I have fantasized about selling off my entire collection and having just one very special doll. But this will remain a fantasy, as I enjoy my varied crew, and I know I could never be happy with just one doll, no matter how beautiful, costly, or special. I collect what I like, and don’t care if they all go together as none are specific characters set in a story. Eclectic best describes my collecting.

And to answer the question about what doll I’d sell everything for, it would be a Loongsoul fullset, a really big, impressive guy with everything painted, the outfit, and all accessories. But then I’d have to quit the hobby so as to never be tempted by another bjd. Just couldn’t do it!

    4. yeah, I don't think that I would sell my collection for a single doll. Either for the aesthetic or for price. If a doll doesn't fit, well, I don't exactly know how it couldn't fit in my collection. I use my collection as a creative outlet and have everything from a 4 armed demon to 2 cat girl maids and every genre of doll in between. As for price, that also wouldn't really be worth it to me. No singular doll, no matter how expensive, can be a replacement for all the different joys I get from my various dolls. I don't really look to any singular doll to make my collection "complete" and I think I would just end up missing my dolls terribly if I sold them all.
In regards to adding new or expensive dolls, I usually prefer to add more of a buffer before I add them to my collection. There's a doll coming up in the next months that I plan on getting that is over 1000 dollars for the base doll but it's worth it to me because I have been wanting and saving for this doll for months in preparation. As for looking for dolls that "fit," that's not really a concern to me. There's a lot of similar dolls and if one in particular doesn't fit, then, with enough time, I'm bound to find one that works better.

    5. This.

I have many many dolls (BJD and off-topic) and being ll matchy-matchy isn't a thing for me. Even within my "family" groupings of BJD, they're from all sorts of companies:

The unifying factor is more how they're dressed within each grouping - My Victorian family, the 1920's/30's girls, the three more modern late-teens... and even then there are goss-group friendships so, for example, my modern mini is often to be seen with my 50's (1850's, 1750s, 1950'ws, so long as it's fifties) mini.

    6. Yes, believe it or not I actually did this!:o I began the hobby back in 2006, and was happily collecting a varied crew, exploring a fantasy world of my imagination. Then, at the end of 2010 (key in dramatic music here, dun-dun-dun) Dollzone released their flower dolls, Moment and Anson. My jaw literally dropped, my mind whirled, and I immediately thought I’d keel over if I didn’t bring an Anson home. I literally stalked Denver Doll waiting for them to activate that “buy” button for days. And yes, I did sell dolls to pay off her layaway as quickly as I could. And yes, once she arrived (in January of 2011) I realized that her character was so big and encompassing that she made all the dolls that were left positively redundant. So I sold them all and started over. While it was a very difficult decision to make, it was absolutely the right one for me and I’ve been completely delighted with my collecting ever since. A full decade (and 46 amazing dolls) later, I still feel that restarting my collection back then was the right thing to do. My Anson is still the star of my collection, the hub around which all my characters flow. And add to all this that her sculpt was suddenly cancelled only 3 months into production due to packaging issues, I feel very fortunate indeed that things worked out as they did.

    7. I already have a doll who doesn’t fit my crew at all. He’s my first doll and he’s MSD, while the rest of my crew is SD. I just can’t part with him, since he was my first, so he hangs out in a display case in a different room so my crew still looks coherent.

I also have a green RS Dai on the way. She doesn’t fit, as all my other dolls are human, but she’s part of a story with one of my human dolls who has the ability to portal anywhere in the universe or time. Those two girls are in a different storyline from my main crew, so while they will be displayed in the same room, they will be separate from each other.

So I guess my answer is that if I wanted it bad enough, I’d find a way to make it work without selling my others!

    8. My crew consists of all of the dolls I wanted in my teen years. I might be a little crazy and say that I think I would trade my current, more collective, bigger crew I have now for my little crew I had when I was younger. Honestly, I couldn’t imagine selling one of my dolls now. They’re priceless :D

    9. I couldn't so this. I mean, technically I COULD. But I won't. I really like my collection. I do like to keep adding... (I have to many dolls *cough*). But I don't want to sell any that I have now. I would have to sell my Volks girls to buy another Volks girl, and I don't want to.

    10. Like most- I couldn't. My dolls are made up to be my ocs- and they look pretty spot on... well most of them lol

    11. There was once an opportunity for me to possibly trade one of my current dolls for one of my grails. I couldn’t do it. Even though the grail sculpt is much more rare, I like the dolls I have now and breaking up my current crew in order to add her would have ruined the dynamic. I’m happy with what I have now and wouldn’t want sacrifice any of them to add another.
As far as style, I don’t imagine it’s possible that any doll I’d want would not fit into my current collection.

    12. I love my crew and I don't see myself sacrificing them for another doll, as beautiful or special it may be.

I may save up to get a particular, expensive doll that do not fit the aesthetic of my crew, or selling a doll I don't love. But if I just couldn't get it despite my aforementionned financial efforts, I would be happy to hunt it on the second-hand market, or never getting it at all. It's better than selling my crew.

Besides, not appreciating what you currently have and chasing the "next best thing" has never worked for me.

    13. I could never sell off my current dolls, even for my grail. The only coherent thing about my current collection is that I love them all. Even my newest boy "Janus" who was originally a practice head that I never got around to painting and spends most of his time in a carry bag has a special place in my heart.
Not saying I wouldn't love to finally have my grail, but I just can't see letting go of my current collection to have him.

    14. I can’t think of a doll that exists that I would do this for. Hmm..:?
