What Dolly Rules Do You Set For Yourself?

Jan 23, 2011

    1. 1. No buying dolls that are over my max doll spending limit.

      2. If you don't have the money, don't buy it.

      3. No impulse buys. Buy wishlist dolls/clothing only.

      4. No buying dolls until I have saved up all the money I need for my Norway trip! (though, I can save up my monthly doll budget to get a new doll)

    2. 1. No more dolls

      2. Break all rules.

      • x 1
    3. I will never keep my doll out in the nude

I don't want to be out and about naked! I don't want my family peeking at them like pervs >.<

    4. 1. Only make the Akatsuki into BJD. If you want others you'll get them after the Akatsuki are complete.....First doll, Soom Teenie Gem. Well thats a good start. :| Buys three of the Akatsuki then....Aww look how cute the Luts limited Zuzu Delfs are.:D*buys one* Dang it. Aww Pukipuki Pukisha is sooo cute. I gotta have him....Ok no more gotta finish the Akatsuki......I want a Miku Hatsune doll. (still waiting for):doh This time I'm serious bro. Seriously.......The Dollfie Dreams are so cute though. (and even cuter in person).....Guess the rest of the Akatsuki are on hold for now.

      2. I must absolutely love a new doll before I buy them. If I don't bond with him/her after looking at them a thousand times then I won't buy them. I don't want to spend all that money and then I don't bond with him or her. :( I know I could always sell them but I'd rather not have to go through that. I haven't come across that problem yet and hopefully I won't have to.

      3. No acrylic eyes! They break too easily. *buys Dollfie Dream head with acrylic eyes* Welp *-* There goes that rule. (I held that rule for a while too but its gone now.)

4.Complete the last doll you bought before you get another....uuuum well Konan doesn't have her proper wig. Kakuzu, Deidara and, Konan don't have proper face ups (only the ones I've given them) or their cloaks, under clothes, or shoes. Soooo I think that rule is down the drain. :sweat

      5. A doll shall not be without a face up UNLESS it's a floating head I'm trying to sell. ( I don't like blank heads too much cuz they look lifeless. So I try to put some kind of a face up on them even if they're not that good.) Luckily that rule has not been broken.

      6. New dolls must have at least one outfit and one pair of eyes. Shoes are optional......One naked doll around with all the others wearing clothes seems a bit strange to me. If I were that doll I'd feel awkward. So far all my new dolls have clothes. Thats another rule I haven't broken.:)

      7. All dolls must have a body from the same company the head came from. I like looking at other people's hybrids they have put together but I don't like having them myself. I don't know why either. :?Thats 4 rules I haven't broken yeah me! :XD:

I think thats all the rules I have or in some cases had. ;)

    5. Do you do something that some might think is odd, or quirky, or whatever?I have this thing about pairing up my dolls (they either have to have parents, spouses or significant others available....)

      Why do you do it?
I don't like lonely dolls LOL

Do you follow your rules, or have you broken them. If you've broken them, what did it for you?
I find that this rule has led me to unwittingly expand my collection at times LOL

I have some guidelines. When I first started collecting, I wanted to do cosplay (still do) and proceeded to write a scenario (& some little stories) about my cosplay group. Thus I created a lot of characters.
      So my rules:
I need sculpts that can cosplay various anime/SF/fantasy characters.
I have a planned list of inhabitants of Crosston Creek (my fictional town) If I add a doll it has to fit.
None of my dolls are ACTUALLY fantasy characters
My scale is 1/3, but I've some very short adults & very tall adolescents (go check out real life). The facial sculpt is the big determination usually, although there are very childish SD bodies & very mature MSD ones. IE 70 cm is 6' plus, 60 cm is 5' plus. Any doll under 55 cm is a child or teen - depending.
      I will make anything I can (I sew). I have a 6'x2' storage bin filled w/fabric & I'm going to USE it!!!!
When I run out of room I stop.

    6. * Only buy dolls that would fit a character.
      * Main characters only.
      * My dolls have be in proportion to each other. (So far, my YOSD is not fitting well with my other guys but I love her too much to get rid of her and I haven't found a right replacement)
      * All dolls will come blank (apart from the first tinies that were too small to paint)

    7. I feel this same way. If you're about this tall, you're about this age. I have a hard time with msd's with bewbs, especially because the msd I have at home is pretty flat, so she's set the age standard I suppose.
That said, I *am* considering buying an msd that *is* a bit more mature, but have not been considering sanding off her breasts. Maybe Rhiannon is actually just behind in her body development (see, already I'm changing things to try to get what I want )

I won't get dolls on layaway, though I've considered it many times, because I'm afraid that I won't be able to make the payments, beause of unforeseen events. So I'd rather make sure I can pay the entire amount at once.
Other than that, I dont think I have any rules really.

    8. Am not a 'child doll' or child-like doll collector.
      I like the adults.
the youngest doll I have is Edmund Pevensie from Tonner's Narnia series - and that was because I loved the movie. If I get the Lucy character, then she will be the youngest (and that will be fine!)

    9. My "strange" rule is to have not more than 12 1/6 scale dolls, doesn't matter, are they BJDs or fashion dolls, but 12 is the limit!
It helps me to prevent further expenses, and save space in the room. And, not to get distracted by too many dolls, because if I'm making costumes or taking pictures, it usually involves only one doll at the moment.

    10. My rule is not to sell the extras that came with my (second hand) dolls. I consider them as gifts and it would be disrespectful to make profit out of them. Moreover, you never know when those extras may come handy.
I never broke that rule but once I met a girl from a forum who was not bonding her new doll even though she had bought lots of different wigs. The people at the meeting were trying to help her by letting her try the wigs, eyes and clothes we had taken with us and she fell in love with her doll when she tried a wig I had received with one of my dolls and wasn't using at all. I told her she could keep it but she wouldn't accept unless I kept one of her wigs in exchange. So I think it's okay.
Another rule is not to use 'plush' or fur wigs

    11. I think my only rule I've come up with so far is that the dolls from the same story come from the same company. I'm planning on my first two dolls being a couple and since the first doll I'm getting is from Luts, her girlfriend needs to be Luts too.

    12. My only rule....my adult men need to look like manly men. It's just an aesthetic thung, but I have talked myself out of girly men because they look prettier than my girl. And my girl has to be the prettiest.

    13. Only one so far, not having my non-anthro dolls sit around naked.

    14. Oh, I have one rule! Really cool though.
We had a party once (someone's birthday or something) and I was pretty drunk, when got the access to the internet.
And in the morning I realised, that I had a stange memories about purchasing a doll... Then I checked my account and the order was there, paid in full.
So the rule is - no shopping after the parties! :XD:

The other rule is about saving funds and no layaways. I just got this rule recently.
Layaway is cool, but in four months many things can change. For example my aunt urgently needed money this year for things connected to her health and I could help but a little, because I was in layaway for a doll. And it just didn't seem appropriate to spend my money on a doll in such a moment.

    15. 1. One doll a year (if SD)
      2. Only 10 dolls max (I am considering making this number smaller)
      3. Don't dig into savings unless the money is specifically for the doll
      4. Think before you buy because if you don't like it you can't sell it (not my rule but I think it's a good idea)

      • x 1
    16. ^This :) I tend not to have any rules because things can change. The only real rule I have is that I will not purchase a doll or do a layaway unless I have enough money saved up to do so. If it is a layaway, I'm only doing this to better budget my purchases and not spend $1,000+ in one month.

    17. I actually have a lot of hobby rules and I am very, very strict about them. :sweat I guess it is good that I am, because it has really kept me on track in the hobby for what I truly want. It also helps if I list them like I do here: Not just the rule, but the reason behind the rule to reinforce it and remind myself I made this rule for a very important reason.

      1. No more than 4 dolls at one time. If I want another, someone else must be sold first.
      2. No male dolls, I never seem to keep them around.
      3. Only one size of doll in the doll family at a time, so they can all share clothes.
      4. Only dolls from the same company at a time, too different of styles between dolls bothers me.
      5. No more dolls until I buy a new serger to replace my broken one.
      6. Likewise, no more new doll clothes until I buy a new serger.
      7. No more than 2 new dolls a year, even if the funds allow for it.
      8. Do not spend more than $1,000 on a single doll, I will regret it some time later if I do.
      9. Do not buy dolls more than 5 years old, wait for re-releases whenever possible.
      10. No layaways, always pay in full.

#3 is the one I seem to break the most. :| I've had times where I had SD and MSD size, or SD resin and DD at the same time, or YoSD and PureNeemos, etc. So currently, my doll family consists of Volks SD girls and that is the type of range I intend to collect for a while.

    18. I have a few of rules, which I've broken a couple of times and it ended in disappointment so I'm sticking to them from now on:

      1. No layaways. Usually if I'm buying a doll on layaway it's because I just found out about it and the sale period is ending (and I have no funds saved up). Every time, this resulted in me making an impulse purchase which I later regretted (not to mention it requires financial commitment into the future, and I, for one, do not like to dabble in precognition).

      2. No doll purchases until after at least 6 months of wanting the item. Unless extraordinarily expensive, I can usually afford a doll in a couple of months; but I find that isn't a long enough time for me to figure out if I actually want it. I've made some impulse purchases before and they ended with the doll in the MP as soon as it arrived to me (and avoided other impulse purchases which a month later I realized I didn't want... so this pretty much cemented the "wait and see" approach for me). So now I'm trying out this thing where I'll only buy dolls I know I've liked for a while (next doll is Supia Rosy, whom I've wanted since my first year in the hobby back in '08).

      3. No buying clothing. This one's big. I keep breaking it because I'm too lazy to draft patterns and make the clothes, but... the reality is there's no doll clothing maker out there that comes even close to making the types of clothes I want. I keep settling, and then my dolls keep being put into clothes that are wrong for their character; and then they don't look the way I want them to look, while I've spent the money I could've used to buy fabric instead, which just... ends in disappointments all around.

I've also got some "unofficial" rules that are just patterns that I fall into based on preferences. Like, "all dolls must have urethane eyes" and "no doll can have eyes of the same exact brand and colour as another one of my dolls". But I don't have to actively police myself to follow these.

    19. I have a lot of rules but these are my major ones that I should not break:

      1. No buying dolls before a convention.
      2. Only buy wishlist dolls.
      3. Never use money for bills or savings for dolls.
      4. Only buy one doll at a time.
      5. Clothes and accessories can be bought without saving as long as it's under $100.

    20. My dolly rules:
      1. Buy dolls I love.
      2. Buy dolls I can afford.
      3. Spoil the dolls I have with clothes and crafted awesomeness before looking for more.
      4. Find new homes for my dolls if they're being neglected or we're not connecting.

      My hubby's doll rules:
      1. Don't have dolls stare at the husband.
      2. Don't buy without consulting the husband.
      3. Don't have an army of dolls visible (more than 4).
