1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

What Dolly Rules Do You Set For Yourself?

Jan 23, 2011

    1. - no tiny dolls (the 'cuter' looking dolls too), as I just can't really get into them
      - have a character planned out for the doll!

the list will probably grow ahaha.

    2. 1. Never browse doll sites when upset or sad. Retail therapy = buyer's remorse
      2. Never buy a doll just based on company pictures (just broke this one) :doh
      3. Don't buy a doll immediately after a doll meet (I have to remind myself it's probably envy not love I feel for a sculpt)

And lastly...this one's kind of odd:
      4. No regular human bodies (must have something fantasy-like going on like animal ears, wings, robot parts, or crazy creepy jointing)

    3. No impulse buys. If someone grabs it while I'm thinking it over, it wasn't meant to be. Although granted, I broke this rule with my Pukifee Mio and didn't regret it. She's adorable.

For my first photos - especially for my blog - I want at least one new outfit for a new doll. Even if they're going to share (which they most likely will.) It just seems wrong to have a new character photographed in a dress someone else has worn twenty times. (Here's where sewing comes in handy. They may all be wearing sundresses but it's not the same sundress.)

No wigs that won't stand up to being handled. I've already had a bad experience with a gorgeous wig that turned into a clump in about two weeks because it was on a doll I handled and photographed pretty much all the time.

    4. I don't like to buy dolls without faceups. I always, always have to buy the faceup. I guess if I fall in love with a doll for it's picture on the website I'm ordering it from, I want it to look like that in real life. Also, I only like MSD. I just don't find anything appealing about a doll that's three feet tall. Lol.

    5. As of right now:

      - No dolls taller than 65cm
      - Can't take money out of my savings to buy a doll
      - 2 new dolls MAX a year, changes when max doll limit has been reached
      - No more than 10 dolls total at a time (currently at 5)
      - Do my own face-ups unless the company one is exactly what I want
      - Majority of collection must be SD which helps me to only look at SD dolls instead of ALL the dolls

    6. 1. No paycheck money can go to dolls. It has to come from selling other possessions or from selling illustrations/crafts. This doesn't count towards eyes, clothes, wigs etc but I try to find alternate ways of earning money for that as well.
      2. I have to always be planning or making some project/outfit for them. My dolls are my Muses (even though I don't draw dolls) and I LOVE making them stuff.

    7. 1. Give it a few days before buying
      2. Write a list of pros and cons
      3. Don't have more than one item on layway
      4. Have a few months between layaways
      5. Don't spend over monthly budget
      6. Don't buy just because "everyone else likes it or because its rare"

I also like tiny dolls both mature and immature. Mostly because they're more fun to sit at a desk and play with. I love MSDs too but they tend to do a lot of "sitting and looking pretty".

    8. 1. Think about it carefully.

      2. OWNER PICTURES ARE PARAMOUNT. If I don't still feel "OMGNEEDITNAO" from looking at owner pictures I wait, or pass it up.

      3. Use own money.

      4. You can NEVER have too many pieces of furniture... You just don't have enough room to display it ALL.

      5. Shoes. SHOES ARE REQUIRED AROUND HERE.

      6. No SD's unless I have the room for them.

      7. Boys must be as handsome if not more then Avalon. 8T; Least to be in my personal collection.

      So yeah... Those are mine.

    9. Well, i have some rules but they are mostly for my country import duties*costums

      * look most from Korean shops for dolls(for shipping is better)
      * dolls no bigger than 62 cm.
      * use only prepaid/gift cards to buy them.
      * everyone has to have eyes, faceup, wig and clothes as soon as posible, that means a i do the faceup and some temporal clothes by miself

    10. Doll rules:

      1. Have to be absolutely in love with the doll before considering buying it.

      2. Cannot look exactly like company photos. It can have either same clothes/wig OR the same faceup. (Broke this one with Alphonse since he was my first doll). Eyes have to be bought specifically for the character unless the default eyes they come with match well to what I was intending.

      3. Never spend over 150$ on clothes (unless it's limited and I will die without the outfit). If I wouldn't spend that much on an outfit for myself, my dolls will not get the same treatment.

      4. If the doll is limited, I must wait till the very end of the ordering period to order it. To ensure that I still want it after the hype has died down. If it's sold out by then, well too bad for me. (I can definitely see myself breaking this one because all three of my current dolls are LE)

      5. The doll must fit a pre-existing character OR if I am dead-set on buying them and have to create a character for them, that character must fit well into an open gap of story. (eg.- main character is a princess, another is a slave. Who sold the slave to them? That's where new doll comes in and I have a chance to further develop story and characters because of them.)

      6. Try to make everything myself even tho my sewing skills are obviously subpar.

      7. No hoarding clothes that no-one will/can wear. (Struggling with this one because I bought some very girly Msd clothes off the mp for my floating heads but my only full Msd is a boy with very large bird feet).

      8. Just because it's cool does not mean I have to have it.

      9. Most of this is a fantasy setting, the clothing and props should reflect that.

      10. I spent so much money on these dolls- PLAY WITH THEM. Do stuff with them at least twice a week. I love them so much and it's very hard for me to even get of bed a lot of mornings, but I hate to see something so precious go to waste.

      Now for actual money rules:

      1. Only 100$ a month for fun stuff, dolls don't get an exclusive fund just for them. My fun stuff budget can be saved up however for larger things (dolls).

      2. Rent first, PC components second, fun stuff third. If my PC components exceed 100$ for that month, I must pull from my fun stuff budget. I will NEVER dip into my savings.

      3. I must have the full amount for a doll when purchasing but anything over 300$ must be put on layaway. That way I can stagger my spending over the course of a couple months. This way I have the sensation of buying every month (cos I'm a total shopoholic when I get bored/antsy).

A few of the rules overlap but hey whatever. ^-^

    11. Rules :
      1) One doll per year (broke it once because of a limited)
      2) The doll has to be the PERFECT for a character in mind (no buying if it just "pretty")
      3) No layaway
      4) Everything pass before BJD (financially speaking)

    12. I haven't done this before but decided this year to set a few boundaries for myself, just from seeing what I've been collecting and my favorites from these. Plus saving for a house so limit!

      1) Only 3 new dolls this year
      2) MSD and YoSD's only. No more SD's or Soom Faery's they are beautiful but just sit on my shelf getting ignored
      3) Limit new clothes/eyes/wigs. I may have a hoarding problem lol. Only buy if they specifically suit a doll, not just if it is pretty

    13. Rules:
      1) Only one of each size
      2) Only buy in-stock dolls.
      3) After deciding on a doll, wait at least 3 days before purchasing

Rule one makes it so that I can have a maximum of three dolls. Rule two and three pair together and make it so that if the doll I have decided on is no longer in-stock, than I cannot buy it (thus limiting the potential of breaking rule one). Finally, rule three makes it so that I am sure I really want the doll enough that it is not an impulse purchase.

    14. New rules:

      1. Only one SD doll while living at home (when I get my own place, which will probably not happen for a couple years, this rule might change depending on space) OR if I get a bigger room (swapping with a sibling, not likely to happen though) (mine is the smallest bedroom in the house and already very cluttered)

      2. Said SD sized doll must be one I really love and have considered for a significant amount of time (no impulse buys) OR a cheaper doll like Bobobie Apollo (who I do like)

      3. Because said SD will be my only one, they must be versatile and willing to wear different clothes, wigs, etc while still maintaining a consistent character (I don't do multiple characters per doll, it doesn't work for me)

      4. Basically they have to be stunning enough to be my ONE choice for SD size

      5. No impulse buys

      6. No browsing the dolly mp if I already have specific plans to get a certain doll- no derailing planned purchases for an impulse buy, even if they are a cutie!

      7. When saving, each $100 is a checkpoint that cannot be breached- i.e. if I have over $200 I can only spend up to what would bring me down to the two hundred mark on things that aren't my main goal

      8. No more Kid Delfs, because while adorable, their posing leaves much to be desired. (maybe one after I complete my current plans, but otherwise, no)

      That's it for now...

    15. I said i'll never touch my bjds with bare hands.
      But now I got gloves.

    16. I don't usually set rules for myself but since this is an expensive hobby I had decided to try it for once.

I would just buy one doll. - Yeah, nope. Couldn't stop myself. I own two, have paid for two and I'm arranging layaway for another two.
After that it was : Only two dolls a year - Again, nope
More girls - I only own boys
Just one outfit is enough - broke that one with my first doll
Not getting too absorbed in the hobby - I'm on this forum, something I didn't imagine when I started this hobby, I have a tumblr dedicated to my dolls and I rp with them. I can safely say I failed at this one.
Only buy characters - I was doing so well until I fell in love with a doll and I just had to have it.

    17. I was hoping to set some rules for myself after getting my first doll, that I would wait until she was finished before getting the second one, but I had a floating event head and I thought she could use a body, so I got my second doll because I needed a body, so why not get a body with a head right? Wrong! I fell in love with her, and now I still have a floating head! My other rule was to skip the next event and only buy one new doll a year but when the new event came out I was so excited about it that I didn't want to lose my chance, so I ended up buying another doll, and all the rules went out the window

    18. My dolly rules are:
1: Usually go down a size with eye recommendations.
2: If the body doesn't pose, it doesn't matter how pretty it is, I don't want it.
3: No more than 15 dolls. ever. I can't even imagine having 15...
4: I don't like having a "dolly stock'. I don't want extra wigs or eyes floating around.

    19. My only real rule is this:

      1) Only one of each body allowed. This is because I like all of the characters in my storylines to have distinct and unique physical presentations.

There's some wiggle room on this rule; if a body has variations, such as coming in different bust sizes or different leg lengths or the like, I do consider those to be different bodies. Likewise, if I am planning significant (structural) modifications to a body, it does not count towards the "one of each body" rule, as another of the same body in my collection is likely to end up being very different. I've made an allowance once also for a significant skin tone variation (white skin vs tan skin) but otherwise, I have stuck to this rule fairly well, with only one case that really "broke" it. (I have two ChicLine Muscular Males in white skin, but they're in different storylines so they would never interact, so it doesn't bother me.)

I also try to keep everyone within each story or narrative group in scale with one another, but the narrative groups do not have to be in scale with each other.

    20. Only one rule:

      1. Whatever I buy, I must love. This applies to everything - dolls, BJD pets, clothes, accessories, props, etc.
