1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

What Dolly Rules Do You Set For Yourself?

Jan 23, 2011

    1. My only real, unbreakable "rule" is that dolls who are supposed to be posed or gouped together absolutely MUST look like they belong together... ie: the proportions and sculptural style have to be a good match. It'll drive me up a wall if they don't.

Other, less rigid guidelines for my collection include things like age/scale consistancy (1/3 are adults, 1/4 are older kids, 1/6 are younger kids-), dressing them all to a certain standard, and not cheaping-out on small things, like their jewelry.

    2. Oh I also had a rule that I was to get a boy doll only XD
Yeah that was broken the minute I got my first doll ^^; OOPS

    3. 1.) No two dolls may have the same hair color/eye color combination.
2.) The bed belongs to Soren. It is his XD
      3.) Nothing too child-like.
      4.) More boys than girls.

      Not really weird rules. Just....restrictions.

    4. I've got a couple:

      1. Must have an even (or close to even) number of boys and girls when collection is finished
      2. Must do all face-ups
      3. Must not buy clothes other than School Uniforms
      3. All wig colours must be natural
      4. Eye colours must compliment wigs just so
      5. Face-ups should look natural (but can be dark or punky/heavy on the 'make up' look
      6. No dolls under 30cm or over 65cm. (may have to make an exception here though, I've been falling for 27-28cm dollies lately...)
      7. Not too many dolls with the same wig colour- no dolls that aren't related with the same eye colour.
      8. No two bodies from the same company unless they're different genders/resin colours/heights.

I guess I get pretty picky about having them all look different and unique- but it also helps keep me from buying dolls that I don't necessarily need.

    5. I have rules that I'm not sure I count as weird but, yeah:

-Adult guys must be in the 68cm-72cm range
-Adult women must be in the 62cm-65cm range
-Teenagers must be in the 58cm-60cm range
-Children must be in the 42cm range

It's only becoming hard because I have to figure out WHERE my characters fit and it's not working out as expected. Like, already with Alia, she's a teenager but she's tall and a goddess and I felt like restraining her to 58cm (the body that comes with Dikadoll Lola) was just not gonna work. So I got her on the 65cm body but now I feel all awkward about that because she's 17-18 in my story. LOL! I didn't realize it would be so hard!

I also told myself nothing below MSD size (because I have fat hands and it I fear it won't work out in handling them) yet here I am expecting one 26cm girl and I'm looking for another! Argh!

    6. Gee, I don't think I have any weird rules! I don't think "boy dolls only" is a weird rule, so I guess I don't count that one. Besides that, I don't think there are any restrictions. I don't see the point. Anything I buy has to be something I really really like-- that's about it.

    7. Hmm. Some of my rules remain... for now. We'll see how that evolves.

      1. No buying dollies on credit. I made this one up after charging a doll and agonizing over how long it took me to actually pay it off. Never again. Now, I have to have the funds to buy (or layaway, I'm not opposed to layaway) in my checking account at the time of the order.

      2. No more than 3 floating heads in the house at once. One day I looked at my shelf and realized I had more floating heads than full dolls. That's not going to happen again. No matter how sexy the head is, I cannot buy it until one of my other heads gets a body.

      3. I can't buy another doll until the last one I bought has at least one outfit. That outfit can be homemade or purchased, but I just don't want to get into the habit of having naked dollies lounging around. Wigs and eyes are included in this rule. The reason Tiaen doesn't have a body yet is because I'm still undecided about Rheda's wig and eyes. Plus, she's naked. <<

    8. I don't impose many rules to how I buy my dolls, but the one rule I do have is quite 'restrictive' its not really odd but my friend certainly thinks so. (We have almost polar opposite methods of collecting, to each and their own :3)

My one rule is 'they must be 110% perfect before they come home' there have been exceptions like my Breakaway, ReAn and Alk they live by 'if they don't start perfect right but become perfect then its fine.' They were dolls where I was only about 90% certain, but had a gut feeling about them, all that was needed was the perfect wig/outfit/eyes and they esculate and become perfect for me.

I have found if I'm not completely in love with a doll before they head home, chances are they get sold. To me, I don't see the point of bringing home a doll thats 'just good enough' when I can spend the money on a 'perfect' doll. It's mainly one way to stop me buying dolls left, right and centre and getting bored of them.

    9. I only have one.

      1. I'll only buy dolls for characters I already have.
If it doesn't already have a 'soul' to me, then I really have no attraction to a doll. If I bought one that didn't fit an existing character of mine, I don't think it would stay with me for very long.

    10. I only have one rule:

Only buy one doll a year. Max.

Two heads I consider as one doll, two bodies however... not so much.

    11. (What a fun thread!)

      My rules:

      a) Only 1 super tiny doll (Elfdoll Tulie) because she is our favorite, and I don't want her to ever have competition.

      b) No dreaming eyed heads (my boyfriend really dislikes them, and he respects that there are some toys he likes that are too creepy for me in this house and doesn't get them).

      c) All the sculpts have to look good together, no matter the size. (2 beautiful limited dolls had to find new homes simply because when next to my other dolls they didn't work and I couldn't get over it).

      d) All large dolls must be able to at the very least (size wise) switch heads, better if they can switch fantasy parts (Hello, army of Soom).

oh and.. e) At least me and one other person close to me must agree that each doll I buy is really special and is worth bringing home (soon to be broken I suppose, I think it's just been a fluke to this point).

aaah, for got the most important! f) 1 green skinned doll per year!

    12. LOL I'm the same way.. I can't stand layaway! Its just gonna take TOO LONG! ... I had my Hyperon on layaway and I was like, "F THAT. -pay off-" .... so now I'm broke lol. er rather, my visa is a little higher than I wanted it to be hahahaa

    13. I've given myself rules because I have a small house, and doll stuff was begining to take over.
      This is my rules formula:

      1) Units of "DOLL" cannot exceed combined maximum capacity of [display shelf] and [storage closet]

      2) Units of "SHOE" and "WIG" cannot exceed combined maximum capacity of [doll's feet]/[doll's head] and [shoe box]/[wig box]

      3) Units of "CLOTHES" cannot exceed combined maximum capacity of [storage boxes]

      4) Units of "CUTE JUNK" cannot exceed maximum capacity of [house]

      5) If maximum capacity is reached, and more units are incoming; sell any units that have been unused in the past 12 months.

      Oh, almost forgot:

      6) New units cannot be purchased unless value of [rainy day money] is equal to or greater than purchase price.
      7) New units of "DOLL" cannot be purchased before 2 months of [Hmmm.... do I really want that one?], UNLESS facial reaction is equal to or greater than [*3*], in which case 1 month is sufficient.

    14. I made a few rules for myself, which most (all?) of them I've broken...go figure

      1) Stick to SD's, maybe MSD too. No tinies!!
      2) Only buy a doll when you have money saved up and have a job
      3) No impulse buying
      4) When getting a paycheck do not spend it all on doll stuff
      5) No more than 2 dolls a year

Those are the only ones I can think of at the moment...but I've pretty much broken all of those :doh

    15. well, here are all my rules, most of which are broken

Just One-yeah no. now I have 7...or 8? maybe 9? GAHH THEY MULTIPLYYY
Only MSD-but look how many more sculpts there are in other sizes!
      Only Boys-But that darn marketplace.....
No Anthros- Have not broken this...YET. Pipos stop being adorable. now.
No Volks- Originally I said this for 2 reasons 1. Of the few sculpts I saw first getting into BJD's I wasn't a fan of 2. I had a bad experience at the Volks store in Akihabara. but...now.....Williams....School A....Lucas.....School C...Masha....F-16....MSD F-18....GAHHHH.
No Full Sets-I have not broken this personal rule yet, and I don't THINK I will >.>....Full sets are lovely and amazing, but too expensive, and usually default face-ups don't suit how I want the doll to be....but mainly, they are too expensive XD
No Older and Younger versions of the Same doll/character-well, I am selling a doll and reshelling him as an older doll...does that count as breaking the rule?:sweat

    16. Only a couple rules xD
      1. The main rule: If you MUST add another doll to your list, then one already on the list MUST come off. It's helped me so far to stick with a set number of dollies xD Added spiritdoll, removed pullip (off-topic, just for example), added AoD body, removed ringdoll body (...Sort of. He might still come in the far, far future)
      2. Only ONE preexisting RP character. I have a hundred, and making dolls of them all would break my bank and literally focre me out of the house because it would be so packed with dolls x.x So I picked my oldest and dearest to come to life.
      3. Only ONE girl. So far so good :D
      4. Don't get the cheese mouse, don't get the cheese mouse, don't get the cheese mouse...

    17. Oh I totally forgot one....

NO ANTHROS - >-> must stop staring at cheshire.... Must... not... purchase.....

    18. 1. SDs or bigger only
      2. All bodies must be from different companies, or different styles if from the same company (EX: different bust sizes)
      3. NS and WS only

    19. I need to adopt that floating head rule of Pazuzu's!

So far my rules have evolved, but they are:

No tinies, no msd. (I've had them, so I am not tempted now). OK, I still have two leftover msds but one is technically not mine.

While I appreciate the humor and craziness of The Insane Pipos Cheshire and the possibly homicidal squirrel-thing, I can admire them in other people's collections. They cannot live in my house.

Any new doll has to have something the current crew does not. (Horns, hooves, fancy ears, extra appendages, etc.) Otherwise, if someone new comes to town, someone else has to leave. (There is only so much room. )

Everybody has to have something to wear, even if it's just a scarf and some jewelry. Everybody has to have eyes and a face, even if it's my own crappy face-up. Shoes are apparently optional.

I have a dollar limit. It depends on what is in my PayPal account ;)

    20. I actually have this rule too but I forgot! XD

But, yeah, so far I have lucked out but I would honestly prefer if the character dolls I get don't have similar bodies unless they're twins.
