What Dolly Rules Do You Set For Yourself?

Jan 23, 2011

    1. Oh, I had rules.

First rule: One doll only. BROKEN.

Second rule: One boy, one girl only. BROKEN.

Third rule: MSD sized dolls only. BROKEN.

My current rule is no more than four dolls... We'll see how long that one lasts. lol

    2. never have more girls than boys.
unfortunatly, I feel this will happen.
in part because of the second rule: no more MSD
all the boys I REALLY like are MSD. so that makes almost only girls on my wishlist D:

edit: OH just thought about that one. I think it's the most important: no doll should have the same body unless they are twins.

    3. I'm not a stickler on same-body rules, but all the HEADS have to be different. I really don't want any repeated head-sculpts. so I have two ResinSoul bodies, but one's a WS An head and one's a BBB Sprite head on the RS body. None of the dolls I have plans are repeated head-sculpts, no matter how pretty the heads are. XD

    4. Let's see...
      1. If the doll looks so bad that I'd feel ashamed to have it as my avatar, then it has to go. This is more or less my rule of thumb for deciding if I should sell a doll.

      2. If possible, no hybrids unless absolutely necessary. Stick to the same company as the head.

      3. If I really must hybrid (if the company doesn't make bodies or their bodies are appalling) then I must never cheap out on it. Never hybrid to make a cheaper doll. Always pick the most suitable bodies.

      4. No white skin, French resin or dyed tan dolls. I'm just not careful enough to take care of them :sweat

      5. Think before buying. No more impulse buying >.< . To many bad mistakes...

    5. 1. Nothing bigger than a MSD.

      2. All dolls must have clothes/wig/body/eyes/etc. before I can purchase another.

      3. No sleeping heads unless they come with the doll.

      4. Doll #4 must not be an elf/fairy. Three dolls with pointy ears is enough.

      5. No more than 5 dolls. I lack the space for anymore at the moment. Rule will be revised when more space is available.

      6. Stay far, FAR AWAY from Soom once Freya gets here. Or else Rule #4 may be broken.

      7. No dolls with talons, giant claws, wings for arms, etc. Maybe I can go near Soom after all... NO! Nonono.

    6. 1. Must have Mr. polyhymnia's blessings (neither of us makes a big purchase without the other's blessings)
      2. No layaway.
      3. No going into debt.

    7. 1. If it's not ABSOLUTELY PERFECT, don't even THINK about buying it.
      2. Don't buy anything you can make yourself. If you don't know, attempt first. (includes face-ups)
      3. Don't worry about yellowing/staining. If it's going to be in a dark corner it's whole life, it's not worth what you paid for it.
      4. Don't buy/send resin outside the USA. (exception for new dolls, obviously)
      5. Do not exceed two while you are still in college. Then, no buying more unless you have a definite excess of money. (aka never lol)

    8. 1. Existing OCs only. No "The doll will name me what to name it!" cases. Ever. 8(
      2. If you can paint it, draw it, sew it, sand it or carve it, you don't need to pay someone else to do it.
      3. Check the second-hand market first.
      4. Failing that, locate a domestic dealer.
      5. Failing that, be absolutely sure it's the one.
5a. This is a perfectly legit excuse to spend hours on DOA.

    9. I almost always change shirts before I cuddle my boy. I can work with him/pose him/etc. without doing so, but if I'm going to settle in in front of the TV for a nice long dolly cuddle, I have to at least change shirts, just in case the shirt I'd been wearing was spilled on/I had dandruff/got dirt on it. I get a little anal about it.

There have been times when I went and got him out and cuddled him just because I'd just gotten out of the shower so I knew my clothes (and in fact, skin and hair) were clean. I mean, it's not like I think he's more fragile than he is, and I've got magic erasers and oil free dish soap if something did get on him, and a delicates bag for the washer if I accidentally transferred a spill on my shirt to his clothes. I just would rather not have to worry about messiness. Well, I was always obsessive-compulsive, but if I'm not going anywhere on a weekend/holiday, I'd sit around the house in my ratty, coffee-stained pajamas if it wasn't for him.

      =^__^=

    10. I'm pretty shocked my thread got off the ground like it did! I thought I was the only one, and would've gotten maybe two or three responses (if I was lucky!).

And I like how a lot of people are also telling how they've broken the rules they'd set for themselves. I'm going to add that question in my original post!

I guess I can also add that I try my best to find things WRONG with a brand, a sculpt of a doll I'm thinking about getting. Then I ask myself is this going to be a deal-breaker. I think I do this for everything, though: I look for bad reviews of products just to see if a) it applies, or b) is really going to bother me.

    11. Well...I'm not sure these really count, since I'm hoping to keep it to one doll, but here are some of the rules I set for myself before I figured out which one I wanted:
-NS only. I love pale skin, but most white skins are just too unnatural for me.
-No anime-looking sculpts, and no doll that looks younger than 13 (regarding the face, not body). I just stuck them together because they have similar huge-eyed, chubby-cheeked styles that simply don't appeal to me in 3D.
-Must have a nice nose that isn't too high or small. Just a little pet peeve of mine.
-Must have awesome posing. Hybriding to achieve this was fine (and what I ended up doing anyway).
      -No frowning!

These are the current rules I have for myself, though none are specifically about buying a doll:
-No neon wigs. Unnatural colors are fine as long as they stick to tones that make it look like the doll naturally has that color hair.
      -Clear eyes only. I'm not a big fan of most of the effects they use in eyes, so I only buy the simpler ones. And only in glass, too. But unlike the wig rule, any color is fair game. In fact, I try to avoid the more realistic colors because I find them boring. ^^;;
-No clothes except for shoes. I'm trying to learn to sew, so I've vowed to make everything he wears.
-No commissioned face ups. Also trying to learn to do these.

    12. I have some too~ X3

      1. First BJD must be a 70cm+ guy or a 60cm+ for the main character (female) of J.A.S. (my original story)
I was going to buy Dollmore Glamour Doll Ripley Days and was saving up for him like crazy. Then I saw Rosette Sakura and fell in love and then immediately clicks buy. :doh

      2. Follow the wishlist!
"Ooh... a sale~ He looks cute. Yes, he can be Mint's boyfriend! XD" Doll Leaves Mortin cuts in line :sweat

      3. Buy only dolls that match w/ already existing characters.
      Looks at Mortin. >.>

      4. Absolutely no tinies!
Haven't broken this rule yet but "Fay is so cute and so is Mint. Acorn is adorable! Hey, they can be sisters and their little brother is Mortin."

hmm... will add more when I remember. Must rest now. >.<

    13. When buying my main characters i like to keep them from the same company (eg Seth and Jessie are related so their both from DZ and my twins are both Iplehouse) I also prefer to buy clothes for my big dolls and make clothes for my MSD's (mainly because i find it easier) but other than that I'm quite flexible lol

    14. - No playing with dolls when I am sick/sniffly. I don't want them to get germ-y!

      - Get clothes and accessories for the dolls you already have first. Also, get dolls for the clothes and wigs you already have first. (That one might end up being broken though.)

      - Try to get everyone a partner. I want my Yo to have another tiny to play with, and my mini to have dolls her size to play with. And they all keep bugging me to bring their boyfriends/friends home.

      - No dolls under Yo size, because they will get lost, and no dolls over the 65-ish range because I am too small to be lugging them around. We'll see if these last.

      - Think about the dolls you want a lot, and make sure they are really the right ones before you bring them home. I don't want to have to sell one because they end up not being right.

      - Don't get hung up on limiteds. They're usually too expensive, there could always be a non- limited that fits the character, and if you really really decide you want it it will probably show up on the market place someday. Also, you can't afford it.

      - Try to stick to companies you know, that have good feedback, and are good a t dealing with Americans.

    15. - No elf ears. Aaaaand i broke this just by buying my first doll:doh
      - Nothing bigger than MSD. Yeah broke this one too, saving up for an SD now.
      - No super duper long wigs! I really tried not to brake but it looked so good on her...
      - Speak to her every day.
      - I take her with me whenever i can.
      - If she's going somewhere with me i have take a photo of her and me.
      - No layaway, still going strong with that one. Must. Not. Look. At. Soom. Website.

That's all i can think of right now.

    16. --The doll's build/height in comparison to other dolls/etc. must match that of the character I'm basing it on. Otherwise it will drive me crazy (learned with doll #2).

--Outfits cannot cost more than a doll did.

--No doll can cost more than what my car did.

--at least make an attempt to sew an article of clothing before buying one.

    17. My personal rules...hmm...I think I only have one really:

      1. No doll names that I might actually want for a real child.

    18. 1. Only get one doll (broke that one a year ago)

      2. no white skin dolls (broke that one with my second doll - although her white skin is a very creamy color....I still wouldn't want a ghostly white doll)

      3. no elf ears (yeah....got a puki and broke that one too)

      4. no sleeping head/fp (came with my secondhand puki - not my fault i broke that one hahaha)

      5. nothing bigger than MSD-size (I've been wanting an SD for a while now, let's just say I'm in the middle of breaking this rule too)

      6. one doll per size (not broken per se but I divided the tiny section into three sizes [puki, tiny and yo :P] and MSD and slim MSD are two different sizes for me lol, so I'm pretty much cheating mself on this one)

      7. not more than one doll from the same company (eventually I'll break this one too...lol)

      8. And last but not least, I don't change my girls' eyes or wigs as soon as I have found their personalities. I'm tooooo scared I might ruin them for me (weird I know)

    19. I guess my weird rule is that I won't have more than one doll from a company until I have at least one doll of every size. I love variety, so the simple solution is to buy from all sorts of companies! Once I have at least one doll of every size, (I have a puki, a tiny, a 1/6 obitsu [OT], an msd, and an sd head; so close!) so I can find out what size I like best, then I will allow myself to go back and get more dolls of whatever size I want.

Oh, I also don't like my dolls having wigs or eyes the same color. Like I said, variety! <3

    20. Like a lot of people I was only going to have one... then I was only going to have three... but once I realized I was in the hobby for good I never bothered setting another specific upper limit. Instead I've had the must-be-a-good-match-for-one-of-my-most-important-original-characters rule. And since my main story is still evolving, that doesn't come with a specific number.
(Though I kind of broke it by accepting a doll in trade that had no pre-existing character... Need to get rid of the freeloader.)

Nothing smaller than SD (unless the character really is a young child, of which I seem to have none. This was also broken by aforementioned freeloader).

No two of the same head sculpt (unless twins, of which I also have none).

Dolls in each of the two groups (kids and adults) must look appropriate together. This is the reason I had to sell my Dollzone Lotus after I realized her sculpt was just too cartoonish to go with the newer additions.

No unjointed torsos/torsos that behave as if they do not have a joint (I'm looking at you, LaTidoll Red K).

No dolls that have the wrong resin color, even if the sculpt is otherwise perfect (darn you, Infinity Doll!).

No open mouths (except for Mesrai, who is the only ditzcharacter it looks appropriate on).

Naked dolls must not be visible to dolls of the opposite gender. (Yes, I know it's ridiculous. I'm not fanatical about it.)

Every doll must have their own personal chair, even if they don't sit on it (except Sylisha, who insists on having a companion for some reason...).

      ...I think I'm forgetting a couple.

Oh, right. No more than two new dolls a year. Ha!
