What Dolly Rules Do You Set For Yourself?

Jan 23, 2011

1. For me:

The genders must be pretty equal. Not something like all men or all women, that's just creepy. It seems I'm getting a little more girls at the moment, though, and it doesn't really help that one character shouts "I'm a transgirl, I'm a transgirl!"...
The ratio of homosexuals and heteros should be realistic. It's pretty much the same thing as with the genders. I can't avoid having an asexual character though, even though they're something like one in a hundred. I can't not be utopistic when creating stories...
They should be molds I'm able to make a character for. Or really preferably have characters from the beginning, but my SD Lily.C wasn't like that so I stretched a bit. I have created her a character now though, before she's even come here. I'll probably never buy a mold I simply find pretty.
No full sets and company face-ups.! This may be my most real "rule". I won't buy a doll with a look done ready. Especially the thought of having one with a face-up come here creeps me out, I would only buy one like that if it was a dream mold and only available like that. Then I'd quickly proceed to scrubbing the face-up off as soon as I got the doll.
The sizes should be natural-looking compared to each other. Ah, I never even tried to follow this one. Now my wishlist has: A tiny, a few MSDs, a 50cm one, and a 70cm one. It's simply that I pick my dolls by sculpt, not by some rules I blindly follow. Even these are all ones I'm willing to break. If the mold creates a great character, I'll have it no matter the size. If it happens to be a SD but creates a child character (like one of my characters-to-come) when the teens are MSD, it'll become a tall kid no problem, because I create my characters for the dolls, rather than getting dolls for characters. ^^

2. Do you do something that some might think is odd, or quirky, or whatever?

I decided to narrow my collection as much as possible.

What is it, and why do you do it?

I want to collect only SD dolls and never buy an MSD or any other size. Moreover, I don't want my dolls to be taller than 62cm and I want to have no more than 1 male SD. The total number of my dolls shall never exceed 7. I do it in order not to become overwhelmed by dolls and not to go crazy because of all of different sizes of clothes, wigs, shoes, etc.

Do you follow your rules, or have you broken them. If you've broken them, what did it for you?

So far, I'm following my rules. I'm currently waiting for two SD females :D There is one doll that makes me want to break my rules. It's Spiritdoll Cyathea and she's... 66cm high :)

3. Lol!!! I like this thread =D

My Ten Commandments:

1. Only one, they're too expensive to buy more.
*eyes signature with dolly names in it* :doh

2. Only boys because the girl moulds aren't nice
*looks at ratio of girls to boys* :doh (I have... four boys. The rest are girls. LOL)

3. NEVER EVER SELL THEM. They are too precious.
...:doh I sell more than I keep, I'd have about 30 dolls by now if I'd kept all of them ^^;;

4. Never use layaway, it only encourages you to spend more.
*looks at list of layaways currently open* ...:doh :doh (in fact, now I only use layaway pretty much, since I suck at saving and I've lost out on too many dolls because of trying to save, lol)

5. No floating heads EVER.
*gazes at Andrew and Danalyn* ...:doh OKAY OKAY NO MORE FLOATING HEADS!!! *totally doesn't browse the MP for floaty heads honest*

6. No Volks. They're too expensive and not really worth it.
...:doh Dollfie Dream and MSD Mika WERE JUST TOO DAMN PRETTY >.<

7. Always buy company face-ups.
:doh

8. Okay... NEVER buy company face-ups.
...:D This one I'm actually sticking to, no point in paying a company over the odds for what my local artist can do better for less, lol

9. Never spend more on doll clothes than you'd spend on your own clothes.
*gazes at $100 dress on MSD girl* ............:doh

10. Never let them sit out in the light at home.
This one I'm sticking to as well, they live in their carry bags or in my wardrobe when they're not out with me. I don't mind getting them out for meets or when people come around, but there's no need to give them more opportunity to yellow ^^; I feel bad though, I don't get to see them mich :doh

Whoops, realised I actually have one more:

10a. Nothing bigger than an MSD.
*eyes three SD size dolls and one SD size head*
..yeaaaaaah. :doh

4. Rules I had and totally threw out the window:

- Never buying anything smaller than MSD's because they're just too expensive for such a small size. (all I own right now are... tinies. One of which ironically cost at least $50 more than either of the MSD's I owned. Cuteness totally balances out the (lack of) size, honest)

- Never sell the dolls I buy, because they're here to stay (Yeah, right. Sold all of my original ones, contemplating off-loading another)

- No limited dolls because they're hard to get and harder to replace (Um... I've so far bought two? And eyeing a few more)

- Always buy a doll with the company face-up, even if you intend to replace it later on. Dolls are easier to bond with if they have a face. (Seems like a good rule in theory, but... Can be a waste of money)

- All dolls must wear underwear. (I must say, I stuck to this religiously... but fitting underpants under a pair of tiny skinny jeans? One of Hercules' twelve labours.)

Rules I still follow pretty well:

- All [completed] dolls must have pretty eyes. That means either high-quality glass eyes, or urethanes. All completed dolls must also have at least one good-quality, in character wig, outfit, and pair of shoes to call their own.

- All dolls must have a more or less solid character and look/theme by the time they come home. Ideally, they must have it before ordering but it's not always possible.

- No dolls with eyes larger than 14 mm. 16 mm eyes are fine as long as they can take 14 mm eyes. Less enforced on tinies, but larger dolls cannot have eyes larger than 14 mm - ideally, it should be around 12 mm.

- No layaways, the doll must be paid for in full. (I can see myself breaking this some time in the future though)

- All dolls must be handled with care and stored carefully in their boxes with lids on when not in use. (My room is really sunny and my house is really dusty, so this is just to keep them safe). When traveling, the dolls must wear face and hand protection.

5. I once had a rule that I couldn't buy any more dolls until my credit card debt was paid off......

AHAHAHAHAHAHA! :|

6. My first doll rule is: never buy two dolls with the same body... to make my family various... but I end up breaking it all the time :P

Taty

7. My only real rule now is to stick with MSD sized dolls and I'm fairly sure all of them will be Minifées unless I magically decide that Unoas are nicer and buy one.

I'm also sticking to girls and natural skin rather than white because I've had two delf boys in white skin that I couldn't bond with.

I also think that I may end up with two girl minifées... and then stop.

8. I don't know if this relates, but I have a rule where I can't touch my doll until I have washed my hands thoroughly. XD
Not only do I want him to stay clean as possible.....but I also want to maintain that smell of MSC on him hahaha. Is anyone else addicted to the smell of MSC? ^____^;;;;

9. - Me before dollies. I refuse to spend money on doll stuff unless my bills are payed, my girlfriend and I have food and my car has gas.
- Each doll has to have at least two outfits. Changing their clothes rekindles my interest in them.
- No repeating outfits in photoshoots (I break this one from time to time. -3-).
- Never leave one doll behind. I dunno why... It just feels bad taking two somewhere and leaving the third alone.
- Only glass eyes. Everything else is yuck.
- No floating heads. Just... blegh. I might wind up breaking this one though if I get a sleeping head (BB Fei) for my incoming BB Mei. It'll be more of a switchable part than a random character's head laying around, though.

I know I have more but these are the first to come to mind.

10. My rule is normally,
-Buy the main parts (head and Body) before buying for the other doll or getting extras...
(Alexander has a bunch of crap and i just bought eyes and a wig for my floating head... still no body for her Dx)

-No two can have the same hair style/color or eye color, unless related.
(So far so good)

-Must have name and beginning of background/story or else it's hard to bond and buy things for them
(Alexander didn't have his exact first name down -between Viktor or Alexander >3<- but quickly settled that!)

-Try to keep the height relative to each other but doesn't have to be exact, though if a character is shorter/taller than another
then it has to be that way in doll form

-Full dolls should have at least one full outfit of their own; Pants, shoes, hair, eyes, ect.

-Only glass eyes
(got Alexander Acrylic and i just don't really like how they are :/ )

-Names must come from the country they live/grew up in (i.e. Japanese = Japanese name)
(Alexander Grimm is German and Pandora Elise is French along with her sister Joon Elise
exception is Logan Badger who is British and grew up in France >.> his last name is kinda an inside joke xD )

11. When it comes to size, I have limitations. 25cm at minimum, 70 at maximum.

12. all of my rules got thrown out the window lol I have revised them some...
-no more than 1 70cm, and 5 sd max
-everyone must have different bodies to keep up variety, even if it means different bust sizes on minifees... pukifees dont count because of lack of equally awesome alternatives
-try not to let the dollie count exceed 33 (fav. number... seemed reasonable until i discovered tiny anthros... now its 33 human dollies XD
-Dollies must have a place to sit inside dollie cabinet where they are safe from dangerous things (overflowing)
-must get off my bum and make clothes for everyone before buying more!

13. Since my dolls are all based/going to be based on characters from my books, I sort of have them in what I consider 'sets'. For example, dolls from the same book are from one set, dolls from a different book are another set, and so on...
Buuuuuut my first two sets will each consist of three dolls, so now that I'm thinking of the third book in my series, I'm subconsciously trying to have only three main characters...so that my next 'doll set' will have three like the others :P
I hope I get over this because I was really hoping that my doll hobby wouldn't effect the way I write my characters, eg. changing a character's appearance because it's hard to find a perfect sculpt/wig/pair of eyes.

14. Hmmm. Well my rules ... twist and bend. But they're there to try and keep the diversity flowing.

1. No doll can have the same starting letter name.
This also includes similar letters, like Alice, Grace, and Dave.

2.
No doll can have the same eye or hair color.
However if one girl has white hair and red eyes and the other has red hair and white eyes, I don't think it would bother me as much if the styles and skin tones were totally different.

3.
Only girl dolls.
This is for two reasons, I'm more familiar with female fashion and my boyfriend is ... special. =..= But I find myself more and more wanting male dolls. Prolly cause I have a rule against getting them! You know, wanting what you can't have.

4. No buying clothes unless it's shoes.
Other than buying Rezin's first hoody, this has been going pretty well. o3o

5.
Nothing bigger than an msd.
Yeah, this isn't going to last, I actually have a character in mind for an SD character. XD

6. No normal hair colors.
I'm pretty strict on this one too.

7. Only ONE SD
We'll see. <<

15. I've made a new one: no one larger than 60cm - this goes for male and female dolls. I'm OK with them being a cm or two taller than that, but I don't see a 70cm fitting. I don't want my SD-sized doll to look short compared to a 70cm doll.

Unfortunately, I really love the Iplehouse 70cm dolls more than I do the 60cm or 65cm dolls. I wonder if 70cm heads fit on 60cm bodies...?

16. I have two rules right now.

1. No more cheap clothing. Even if it means a doll will be naked for a while I am no longer buying clothing just to have clothing.

2. Wait for the perfect doll. I shall no longer buy any doll 'cause I have the money. I will only buy dolls that really want.

17. 1. No more floating heads. I'll never end up getting them a body since I'm so picky and paranoid, plus they take up space.
2. No funky wig colours (ie. lime green, neon pink, etc) Because I want my dolls to all look like "normal" people, more or less. And no more fur wigs for my minis/tinies because I just don't like how they look on them...
3. No dolls over 70cm until I move out. Wait for me, Arvid!~ (Ｔ▽Ｔ)
4. No vampires, werewolves, centaurs... or other mythical/fantasy creatures. No matter how beautiful/enchanting/charming they look. Especially if they have more than 2 arms and 2 legs. Humans only!!
5. Each doll must have a different eye/wig colour combo.

... there's more since I'm kind of a control freak but I can't remember right now... -.-

18. no really 'realistic' dolls......especially males

I dunno, I guess I just don't want to be the kind of person that goes 'that doll is hot' then buys it. It just feels strange to me

Aslo, I keep to one 'kind' of doll...... that may change but for the time being its strictly 'animeish fantasy bjds'

19. I had a few rules set for myself... most of which are broken now and include.

1.) No more than one doll. Ever.
Uh, yeah. See signature for how that failed me horribly.

2.) No spending more than $1000 on one doll.
Hello, Delphine. Side Note: She was worth it. She was a grail doll.

3.) No tinies. Which means anything below MSD size.
Hello, CrobiKitten. Again, worth it. He got me back into BJDs.

4.) Doll must have a character before purchase.
Shale, Adamelli, F-20, and Gretel have no story behind them.

5.) Only original characters. No fandom characters.
Switch Uhui's head is going to be Remus Lupin. Fail.

6.) Outfits must be bought in complete sets. No random clothes.
I've actually kept up with this one. I won't buy anything not high-quality or bland looking.

7.) No fantasy dolls.
Kept this one, too. I've been temped by Trond/Kivi and Teschen/Mylo's fantasy parts, but I haven't given in!

8.) Try to buy on secondhand market before from company.
Because I hate long shipping times, and I like re-homing dollies. ^-^ Though It's not a rule so much as a preference/guideline.

9.) Names should not be too similar.
This will be pretty easy for me to keep, I hope. The exception to this rule may be twin dolls.

And I know they're a few others. But as for hair-color, eyes, skin-tone, face-ups or storyline, there aren't any more rules that I can think of. I guess I'm pretty picky after all!

20. for me the rule has always been one doll at a time. that is, I have one doll at any one time, and if I want a new doll, I have to sell the one I already have. Partly for money reasons, and partly to keep me sane!

I'm breaking that rule as we speak, and my house is set to become a 2-doll household for the first time =D
