What Dolly Rules Do You Set For Yourself?

Jan 23, 2011

    1. :O Psycholily that IS an wonderful thing

    2. No teeth! Something about them weirds me out

Then I saw a OT doll and was like 'well there's go that'

    3. Oh I have a few.

      1. No open mouthed. Its creepy has heck
      2. No impulse buys (Broken with my TWO yoSD boy but they were limited so that doesn't count right?? ;m; )
      3. Complete dolls before new dolls
      4. Make sure you loooove the doll. If you REALLY want it, you will be willing to spend a lot on it and you will be happy with it in the end (For eg. My new boy is coming in in customized parts 190 head from Australia, 500 body from Korea, clothes, eyes, hair and all that jazz. Second eg the twin boys cost 750 and I love them to bits )
      5. Make sure you have space for them. All my kiddos sleep together so there has to be room

    4. 1. Only one doll (broke this as soon as I saw mine in person)
      2. Only a boy doll because there are a lot of other girl dolls (broke this too)
      3. Only dolls that I already have a character for (I made this one after buying my first girl and not knowing what to do with her)
      4. All of my dolls must look like they can exist together

    5. XD No, I don't have rules for myself. Rules are meant to be broken, after all. ;)

I do, however have a few guidelines I primarily stick to - guidelines are friendlier that way :)

      - If it's not a character you adore, or can't become one, you don't need the doll. This one is the biggest for me - I'm actually revising my wishlist some right now to remove some random impulse dolls because I have no character for them. I don't want a doll I can't love as soon as I open the box, and the only ones I have sold in the past were just empty shells without characters for them.

      - Minis, no matter how pretty, probably won't be coming home. I like SD and up. I like tinies. I've seen plenty of wonderful minis, but I just can't warm up to them for some reason. Go figure?

      - Either pay the doll off at once, or find a sensible layaway plan. Primarily because I can't pay my rent with resin. Bills, food, and housing all come first.

I think that's it otherwise! Not too many here :)

    6. I've somewhat created a semi-new rule: No MSDs (for now, at least).

Except for the doll I already have, while I know that there are a lot of MSDs that are adorable, I have no place for MSDs in my doll family. When I look at dolls, I think about where they'd fit in the storyline I've created around my first doll. If I can't find a place for them - brother, sister, cousin, BFF - they don't fit the requirements, and can't be bought. Sure, they might still be on my wishlist, but then they'll get taken off after a while.

If I can somehow manage to create a second story with other characters, I'll look into getting MSDs again. But it's sort of difficult to do.

Also new: If the doll costs $400 or more, look to buying a head before the whole doll. I've decided/realized that I don't have to limit myself to dolls that cost under $400 because I can get the whole doll for that amount. I've come to the realization that I can put up with floating heads, because I feel like the doll's head is more important than the body. Heads are usually pretty "cheap" - $100-150, and while bodies are more expensive $2-300, I feel that if you have the head, you have the majority of the doll.

    7. not so much rules, which if i made any i broke, but things I argue with myself about.

No more SD13 boys, their bodies drive me bonkers. I've had two and the second i sold about a week after I got him. I might like the graffiti body, but i haven't spent enough time with one to know.

I did pretty well with the "No more floating heads" until I got a creepy japanese cabinet. Now all the heads are piled in there. XD

    8. I'm already breaking some of mine, just a couple of months into this hobby/lifestyle!
      1. Only getting one! (I'm now waiting on a second) (Well, she was lonely!!)
      2. No taking the doll to work. (she goes every day.)
      3. No spending more on an article of doll clothing that an article of my clothing. Ha. Jeans ruined that one!
      4. Choose a size and stick with it. I was going with MSD for my size, but after playing with other's pongpong and other pukis at a meet, I'm already planning a tiny for next!
      5. Don't start attributing feelings to the doll! (well, I didn't do this. It's her fault that she began talking to me in my head!)

    9. I like MSD and YOSD Girls but only SD Boys. I guess that's kind of a rule. They also all have to be similar (Decora Kei girls and Scene Kid/Hipster boys) apart from my soon to be Luigi Largo character doll.

    10. my one rule is nothing bigger then MSD size. then again I JUST got into the hobby, so I might very well end up changing it at some point seeing as I haven't even gotten my RS song yet. D: and there are already a few SD sized dolls I've eyeballed...for now though, I should probably just wait for my first baby to get here XD

    11. Not as much hard-and-set rules but rather guidelines/preferences for me (so I don't feel too guilty if I change my mind eventually and break them, ha!)
      1. All new entrants/purchases must fit within current 'family concept'.
      2. Anthros-only except (maybe) for exactly one MSD-sized that must look like me.
(Corollary: prefer smaller sizes due to display limitations at home)
      3. Must love sculpt or will not be considered even if fits in concept/budget.
      4. Prefer bunnies in general but other animals can be considered if fit into concept.
      5. Prefer mature bodies.
      6. No buying clothes unless came-with-doll.
      7. Positively no photography without eyes in the sockets. Too creepy to me otherwise. I dunno why I feel that way! :)
      Mme. duBunny

    12. I started this hobby with plenty of rules such as:
-must have a character before I buy the doll
-Always buy a blank doll and do your own faceup and make clothes
-Only 2 (my oc characters Andre and Sara).
      -Realistic looking bodies and sculpts
-all dolls must fit in Andre and Sara's "world"
-NO impulse buys. If you see a doll you like, do tons of research on the company and then wait at MINIMUM a week before buying.

The last one is the only rule I have not broken. XD

    13. I really had to think about this one. They are unconscious rules I made with myself.

      For myself:
      1. Only buy a doll when I can afford it fully. So no lay-a-ways.
      2. No dolls smaller then msd. I'm not even sure about msd's, considering.
      3. No more dolls then I can handle. (But I get the feeling I'm on my way of breaking that one)
      4. I'm not allowing myself to buy any new dolls until I have finished making at least 1 set of clothes for each doll.
      5. I want to do every face-up myself.

Rules for Bodhi ... he can not just 'have' every boy that is in the house.

    14. Let's see... I got a few rules down. It's gonna be fun to see if I'm going to break them in the future. XD

      - Only buy a doll (and/or etc) when I can afford it; dollies are not first priority. You never know when something pops up. Easier for me to do it in one chunk anyway and get it over with.

      - I have to see the mould clearly before I'll even think of purchasing it. That means I have to see some owner photos, the head without faceup, with different kind of faceups and in several different angles before I make a decision. I know what I want, and I won't settle for something I like or aren't satisfied with. True love or it's not happening.

      - One doll has to be complete before I set myself a new target. One regular wig, three outfits (where one is at least sowed by myself), two pairs of shoes and one set of eyes is the minimum.

      - There will be no sharing of clothing, unless it's an emergency. X's hat belongs to X, not Y.

      - Avoid tinies! They have a baaaaaad habit of multiplying I've heard. qAq

      - Keep away from dolls who require 16mm eyes or more.

      - Research, research, research! The doll, the company, the fits.

      - No elves, faeries, mermaids, vampires, centaurs, anthros or horned beasts inside the house.

      - 5 dolls at the time is the max.

    15. I was forced to make yet another rule recently: No more heads. I too thought that buying heads was the cheaper and safer option (that way I could go mad collecting my favourites and still have space in my bedroom for the bed.) Unfortunately, I have proven myself to be extremely lacking in the self control department and now have a box - a BOX- full of heads and no money for bodies any time soon. <-- feels ridiculous. Poor Tory has been waiting for his body for nearly 2 YEARS. No more. NO MORE.

      *panting*

    16. Present rules:
1.No yellow skin , ever againe!
      2.No doll without faceup , untill I have MSC(might take a while)
      3. Not buying more dolls unless the others have wig/clothes/body etc.
4.No shoe-less doll. (To my despair one o my dolls is foreced to skip this one and just use socks , since I am one pair short)
      5. No character-less dolls for a while ( untill I can reshell my beloved Morgan who used to be BF Jasmine)
6.After buying Morgan , no more MSDs ( too many! I have 5 allready , and my fav size is supposedly SD)
      7. 3 More tinyes and that`s it for yo-sd ( I only have one , but I am not in love with this size . It`s just that I NEED small dolls for my story , and they are adorable in pictures)
      8. No buying bjds in 2012 (woow , this one is kinda harsh , but after I buy Morgan , I need to finish every doll I have before buying more. she will me no 10 , and I whant to have a nice collection before going over this number-wierd , I know!)
      9.No layaway
      10. Never buy floating heads

      Wooo , I have a lot more rules than I thaught I would !

    17. Hmm.. I have 2 rules, so to speak, one more recently imposed than the other.

First and foremost is no character, no doll. If I don't have a character in mind for the sculpt I can't buy it just because I think it's stunning.. no matter how stunning :sweat

The more recently imposed one is, given I've gone from 2 dolls to 5 in the space of 6 months.. no more dolls.. I'm officially in resin rehab. I've had my other half witness me swearing to not purchase another doll for at least 12 months, and the only circumstances under which this is to be broken is, I have to sell one of them and they have to be out of the house on the way to their buyer before I can make another purchase.

I'll be a good girl... I can live through all of you! *lol*

    18. I'm brand new to the hobby so I only have two rules for myself.

      1. Only buy dolls that make me happy. (I have a wishlist of 22 dolls but haven't acted on any of them. I have one doll I'm saving up for for the first layaway payment on that won't stop bothering me in my dreams and she's never been on the wishlist.)

      2. Don't let other's trends become my own in order to fit in. (the italics the important part. I tend to try to mimic others in order to fit in and feel accepted. And no my idea to get a kitsune to play with the kitty was not influneced! *you know who you are* I was already thinking about finding a kitsune sculpt, so really you were enabling/giving incentive! Let's go with incentive. *nods*)

I don't have any rules in regards to size. I honestly never thought I'd get a tiny sized bjd but I did and she makes me extremely happy, vinyl girl that she is. ^_^

    19. It's good to have rules, but it's also fun breaking them!

      1. No dolls smaller or cuter than Mariya (Volks Kun). I broke this one with my yo-Kun, but the loophole is that she's basically the same scuplt.

      2. Each doll needs to have her own fashion. SO far I have a sweet loli, a goth-loli, a punky girl and a goth (...ish)

      3. No boys. Although an F40 boy lives in the house, he belongs to my wife, so that's another loophole there!

    20. Hehe, I try to have rules. Just to keep me from going too crazy...

      1. No boys! No matter how pretty they are! I just don't like male fashion and I wouldn't know what to do with them.

      2. No duplicates of the same sculpt. Or character. No, self, you may NOT buy two DD Sabers no matter how low the price of a head may be in a split! >.<

      3. If I can make it myself, I don't let myself buy it. ...Not very good about keeping that one.

      4. Everything must be SD scale. (Mini Dollfie Dream counts since their heads are SD size) Been good about this one so far...

      5. No getting more than a little handful of dolls. (It used to be "only one doll," yeah right...) I'm afraid I'll love them less if I have to many dolls to focus on.

      6. No resin bodies! Dollfie Dream bodies for everything! Resin scratches and yellows and is heavy and floppy... you don't want that, self, do you? Stop wanting them, self! >.<
