What Dolly Rules Do You Set For Yourself?

Jan 23, 2011

    1. No girls. Well, it actually depends on the mold, but I rarely squee over girls. Which probably means I won't buy a girl ever in my life. Well, maybe one.
No tan skin I just don't really enjoy the color.
I DON'T ALLOW PEOPLE TO TOUCH MY DOLLS WITHOUT PERMISSION.Ugh, just. Imagine when someone (probably a curious minor around years old) holding your doll in a weird position or scratching off the face up! That gives me.. the chills.

    2. Hmm, rules, rules. Well, I don't want to limit myself, but I only have two so called "rules". No buying on credit and no floating heads.

    3. -No more than five dolls.
Broken within the first couple of months! 8D

      -SD+ sized dolls only.

I might break this rule if there's an MSD or Tiny sized doll that is too adorable to pass up, but currently my collection consists of the big ones. There's just something about the size that I like, and it's nice having them all stand next to each other with minimal size differences. I might narrow it down to SD13-SD17 sized dolls soon; the convenience of only having to buy things in one size is very appealing.

      -Only buy dolls with faceups.
This is a rule I decided to abandon. Initially I wasn't sure about getting a blank head and having to send out a head for customization, but sometimes the company faceups aren't the best fit.

-Dolls must be kept in a cool, dry, dark environment when not in use.
I take out my dolls to dress up and pose, but after I'm done, they go into my closet. Occasionally I'll have one out with me for a long time, but it's usually just temporary, There less dust to deal with, and I won't have to worry about yellowing as much. The closet is spacious enough to act as a seperate room, and I keep it closed for the most part.

    4. I have a few more to add to this....
No more (after I receive Kenzi off of layaway) SD's, and most likely nothing smaller than MSD after I sell the smaller ones off...now the latter is a bit hard due to me going back and forth with my Yo, and a friend of mine trying to talk me into a pukifee.
NO BLONDES--and I have been able to stick to this one. There is not a single tow headed resin kiddo i my group, nor will there be. A platium blonde streak or stripe? Maybe. Full on goldie-locked? Nope.
And I try to keep (or will) equal amount boy to girl ratios...it doesn't always work, as I'm more fond of boys.

    5. I ONLY have girls! In all other situations I get along with guys better and have more male friends... but my dolls are all extremely girly. Frilly clothes, and skirts and dresses and bows and lace! Not one of my dolls right now is wearing pants - they're all in skirts and dresses. Sure, one of the reasons I do this is because they're easier to pose when their legs aren't restricted, but it's also because OMG IT'S SO PRETTY OMG. Haha XD Terrible.
But I think that's the only strange weird rule I have. I don't really go by rules much. I find they don't exactly get kept - though I wasn't one of those people who said they'd only get one doll. I knew I would get more than one and I didn't kid myself XD

.. OH WAIT I LIE. One of my dolls is in leggings, I believe, and a long tunic... but that's just one doll of over ten. Still pretty good XD

edit: oh yeah and no second hand. I never buy anything second hand for anything else either. I am of the belief that each and every object holds the energy of the person who last owned or touched it, and so I prefer not to get pre owned anything. If I am buying a doll off the market, they have to have spent the entire time in their box unopened or un played with.

    6. I never, ever, ever let the doll's skin touch the pillow she came on. (It is black, and I am afraid it might stain her, so I pretty much freak out).

    7. All dolls MUST have a 'place' before they're seriously considered:
As in, all dolls must have a place in the story around my first and second dolls or they don't really considered. I have one doll - I think from Doll-Zone - who I really want somewhere down the line, but I don't know where he'll fit. I'm thinking of making him the brother of one of my other characters, or the friend of my BBB Apollo. I purged my wishlist last week because a lot of them just weren't going to fit anywhere.

    8. I think for me, that my rule is "no buying dolls as a model of a pre-existing characters". I know a lot of people like to buy dolls to match their characters, but for me, I like finding a doll that suits me and creating a character around it. It would seem weird to have a doll of a character that I've had since before I was into BJDs, all of my pre-existing characters are just too real to me. It would be almost like having a doll based off of a friend or family member.

    9. - No buying dolls that can't fit into my OCs (except for my first, which is a long story)
      - No buying on credit/layaway
      - Only SDs

    10. -all dolls have to look right together. Mostly I stick with the same 'look' ie same company or same features among companies.
-dolls have to have place in my novels or future ones. (alright I failed on one doll. XD)
      - no impulse buys. I find many of my impulses get spilt among other more important resin folks or get traded.
-no tiny dolls. I feel like I would lose or break them.:(

    11. Haha this is fun, it's so interesting how everyone has different restrictions and rules.
      For me:

Only European looking dolls (BROKEN) oh so broken. Hello 5 Asian themed dolls in flowing kimonos, makeup, and long hair.

No floating heads (BROKEN) I needed him and the company was on hiatus making bodies...still is...poor little head, almost half a year and they still aren't making bodies >.>

No mixing companies with heads and bodies unless necessary. Too difficult with resin colour and style, and sometimes they won't fit, and I don't care of I have 5 boys from the same company with the same body, they always wear clothes.

      Must either be smiling or neutral, no depressed looking dolls, they'd make be feel so sad looking at them ;A;

No "normal" or street clothes, outfits must be either Victorian/Rococo formal suits, or royal looking Chinese or Japanese kimonos. No jeans, tshirts, or tennis shoes.

      No fur wigs.

Don't name the doll until you get him (I either break that rule and name him before I order him even or it takes 3 months after I open him to name him. Why bother having the rule anymore lol)

I don't buy second hand, I wouldn't unless it was a super limited out of stock doll that I NEED. I like my dolls to be my own, made for me so it's newer and there's more of a connection I suppose. Also, I need to make sure I love a boy before I buy him because I'm not sure I could handle selling a doll, even if I didn't connect with him, I'd feel so bad and guilty ;A; haha it's a weird thing I have. The idea of selling dolls just freaks me out xD

    12. I never thought about dolly rules per se...but I admit that I used to say:

No Volks dolls............now I'm head over heels for a SD13 Volks boy <3 and I will buy him, one day he'll be mine muahahahaah!!!!

No girl dolls.......then I got a puki Sugar whom I LOVE so much!!!! she wasn't planned, however. She was more like an unwanted child but when she was born (her arrival xD) all my mixed feelings and dislike were replaced by tenderness and love. She's my little princess:aheartbea

and my only rule now is:

Only MSDs from DOD. But I don't like any other MSD boy from DOD so I'm stuck at only 3 MSD boys (not that I need more). So my new rule is: no more MSDs, only 1 SD more (the Volks boy <3) but I plan to have at least 3 tinies more :)

Oh and not more than 10 dolls!!

Let's see if I break those rules in the future...again:sweat

    13. I don't have a lot of rules... I guess I also am one who equates height with age so I don't really like mature looking msd sized dolls. Therefore I likely won't ever own one. I equate smallness with cuteness thus small dolls should be cute younger characters.

    14. thought about it a bit and here is my list

      1) Each doll must have something unique about it
Wether it be a new size or resin color or something unique about the sculpt, each doll has to have a unique aspect not already found in my collection. I came up with this rule after winding up with 4 white skin MSD size dolls that all refuse to wear anything but lolita. I'm still trying to bring myself to sell at least one of them but am having all sorts of problems trying to decide who should go. Trying to prevent this problem from occurring elsewhere in my collection. I may be breaking my rule again somewhat if I get dollzone's caroline/debbie in white, but I suppose so long as I keep them on the conjoined twin body it would count as something unique.

      2) Number of dolls cannot exceed available space
I refuse to keep any of my dolls in boxes because I think that if they have to be put away then they aren't getting enough use to justify buying them. My apartment tiny, which helps me keep my collection down to a mageable number. If I want another doll after I'm out of space, I need to find space first either by selling a doll (which hasn't happened yet) or selling/giving away some of my non-bjd items. Its actually been quite beneficial. I ended up selling two aquariums rather than getting more fish and passed my stuffed animal collection along to a friend's daughter, both of which helped my allergies immensely since the resin crew isn't nearly as dusty or moldy. I also find myself buying more tiny dolls since they take up less space, which is benefitial to my bank account as well.

      3) Number of dolls cannot exceed capacity for maintenence
Similiarly to my logic in rule 2, if I don't have time to do regular maintenence and new outfits for a doll, then its not getting used and I shouldn't be buying it. I'm running into this problem with my overpopulation of lolita MSD size. There are too many that are too similar so each individual one doesn't get very much attention.

      4) only buy clothing that would be too time consuming/difficult to make
Since I have plenty of materials and sewing experience I rarely buy doll clothes. When I do, I try to be sure that what I'm buying is difficult enough to make that I wouldn't be able to make it myself. Most of what I have purchased are shoes, stockings, things with machine embroidery that would take too long to duplicate by hand, and complicated things like tight fitting pants/jackets. Sometimes I'll buy an outfit to come with the doll if its inexpensive enough so they have something that fits out of the box, but I find I'm doing that less and less as my sewing speed/skills improve.

      5) No paying for dolls on credit
I've done layaway a few times but I've never paid for a doll with a credit card. Even layaway is not an ideal situation for me, but at least then the worst thing that could happen is you have to walk away and loose the doll and the deposit. With credit cards, you have to pay even more due to interest and there is no way to be free from the debt if something happens and you can't pay.

    15. ....and my newest one to add to the ever growing list--no WS (white skin) or French Resin.

I'm sure I'll find another odd rule sooner or later.

    16. 1) Doll Must not have teeth (Unless its fangs or vampire teeth)
I don't know why but dolls with teeth freak me out LOL]

      2) Black lines/dots on the tips of the lips
Some companies default face-ups come with those black line/dots at the ends of their mouth, I won't get default face-ups with those, they annoy the hell out of me. Don't know why hahaha

That's about it hahahaaha (that I can think of right now)

    17. It's been a while. Time to see which of these I've broken.

      1. Nothing bigger than a MSD.
I'm ordering my first SD in two weeks.

      2. All dolls must have clothes/wig/body/eyes/etc. before I can purchase another.
      Hasn't been broken.

      3. No sleeping heads unless they come with the doll.
      Hasn't been broken yet.

      4. Doll #4 must not be an elf/fairy. Three dolls with pointy ears is enough.
This technically wasn't broken. I'm getting another doll with elf ears, but it's not doll #4. ;)

      5. No more than 5 dolls. I lack the space for anymore at the moment. Rule will be revised when more space is available.
I still lack the space, but this rule will be broken soon.

      6. Stay far, FAR AWAY from Soom once Freya gets here. Or else Rule #4 may be broken.
Hasn't been broken yet. :) The new dolls won't be from Soom.

      7. No dolls with talons, giant claws, wings for arms, etc.
      Hasn't been broken.

      New Rules:

      8. Make at least one thing for each doll. Bracelet, shirt, etc.

      9. Do not buy any new dolls on credit or layaway.

      10. No floating heads.

      11. Don't buy the doll if unable to create a personality/story for them.

    18. My only "rule" is that all my dolls have to "work together" in their storyline-- of course, the original six I knew I had to have expanded to eleven characters, and I have a couple more in the works. xD;; That's the fun of the hobby, I think; you develop a talent of *making* them work ;) Also, the dolls have to physically all look like they work well together, which for me means mostly SDs, but an MSD and a couple tinies have worked their way in for my fairies. The more the merrier, I say. <3

    19. Very interesting read! ^_^

I have a few rules for this hobby:

      1. Frei above all else.
I know it's favoritism but that's just how it is. Every BJD-related thing I do must conform to him and his features. Even when it comes to new dolls. I guess that's the main reason why a DreamingDoll Hiro came home instead of a JID Ryan/Jerome/Joshua. Frei liked Hiro better. Also, I can withstand Blake wearing the same thing for days on end, but I immediately cave in when Frei demands new clothes.

      2. Only one doll a year.
Yeah, like that would happen. Blake came home 6 months after Frei. (At least I made it halfway through? :sweat)

      3. Only one girl.
Because I just have to have a girl to sew dresses for (Frei doesn't cross-dress). This one's easy because I rarely fall for a female sculpt.

      4. Only 1 SD. And nothing above 63cm.
This sort of overlaps with 3, because as my mother suggests, I better get a girl in SD for much better clothing variety (not to mention easier sewing). That said, Volks Shiro Tachibana is seriously trying to claim this spot. I must keep my resolve! :o

    20. When I first got into this hobby, I gave myself a 5 doll limit. Then it went to 10... and now, I have no idea how many are on my wish list, but it's still less than 20. I broke this rule when I started seeing so many gorgeous dolls that I wanted to bring home! Thankfully I've been able to keep things in-check and have narrowed down my wishlist, and I've got at least 1 hybrid in the works to get 2 birds with one stone, so to speak.

EDIT: I've officially set my collection limit at 20, and since I tend to be very picky about which sculpts I choose, I don't think it'll be getting broken anytime soon. :)
