What drives you to buy a bjd?

Jul 19, 2013

    1. I am kind of a loner, but not lonely. I want dolls for something to do, like taking photos and making story's with. It makes me feel better I think.

On what drives me to buy a doll, many things come into play at the time. If I have a bit of extra money that can drive me to look. What gets me is fantasy sculpts and things like that. If the doll comes with extra stuff and the body and face are cute and go with my story that can make me buy it. :)

    2. I like to create things with my hands. I sew clothes and build things (with glue, foam board, fabric, etc. - not hammers, nails, saws, etc.). I like making doll sized things because they use less fabric and are quicker to finish :)

    3. So what drives you to buy a bjd?
In general: They are so beautiful! I love being able to change eyes/wigs/clothes. I love all the doll styles--wigs, shoes, clothes. They are just too wonderful not to want to have!

What makes you choose Doll A over doll B?
Well, that's harder... or maybe easier? I just like what I like.

What do I like? Well, I don't shell characters, so basically I just have to see a doll and either want it or not, and it depends on the doll!

My first doll, I wanted a boy, I wanted a large size, I wanted elf ears... so I found the one that fit the best. His look just appealed to me. Second doll... female elf doll, his "sister." I like how he looked so that means I liked similar sculpts... Third doll was also from the same company and had elf ears! (There is a TREND here!) :D

Then I got a Volks boy. Way back then, there were only a few companies and Volks dolls were very big in the bjd world. I had wanted one originally, but they were hard to get and sold out. I went to a Volks event and got a One-Off. I picked him because he was a sculpt I liked (cute, boy).

It goes on and on. I just like certain things about a doll. I liked the hooves, horns, and sculpt of my Soom Sard. I liked this or that. It is all kinds of things that appeal to me and make me want to get a certain doll...

    4. Because they're pretty/handsome and I feel like it's a growing family that is always there for me. They're mine and only mine.
I may not talk out loud to them, but I'd like to think they know me and know what I'm going through. We talk through our minds.... haha. I come up with these stories in my head, and it drives me to keep their life going. c:

Also, because I love having a hobby that I can relate to people with. I love spending hours browsing doll photos or lurking here and whatnot.

    5. It's impossible to explain: I just fall in love ! I see a picture, then I cannot forget it, I keep coming back so many times a day that there is only one possibility... buy it ... :)

    6. I love how beautiful they are and I also like looking at good photographs, crafts and etc, everything that talented and skilled people do with their dolls and after watching it I get totally inspired. I wish to create beauty myself too ^__^

    7. Recently, what drives me to buy a doll, is to get a couple to sit in a dollhosue I'm building. I already have one pukipuki, but I don't know what it is with these tinies: they keep invading my wishlist. Suddenly, I want a Dream High Studios elf, a Aileendoll Ashes and a Reakpuki.

For the larger dolls, they have to be sculpts that I admire so much, I can't stop thinking about it. Usually, it also means that the doll has to be difficult to obtain, because for some reason, that raises my interest in a sculpt. I'm still looking for Kanon Louis - a doll I haven't seen anymore since I entered the hobby in 2006 - and because he's so hard to get AND has the look I love, I'm getting more determined to find him.

So, when I like two dolls, but one of them is more difficult to obtain, 9 times out of 10, I'm going for that one. I must be crazy, or maybe I just like to torment myself ^^;;.

    8. Well, I fell in love with BJDs a long while back and have wanted one since. What actually drove me to buy it was having the available money from savings and ideas in which to use my dears. Of course, it may be because they will end up having personas that correspond with stories I have/am creating.

    9. I like cute tiny things! And photography! That's why I like dolls- or bjd' s specifically.

    10. I love the perfection - I go for beautiful adult dolls and cute tiny dolls - they're like ideals in each category. I also like 'friendly' looking dolls - I like their company and don't want anything scary in my bedroom while I'm sleeping! Mainly I have to really like the sculpt so that no other doll is as attractive to me. I discriminate less with the little child, 1/6 type dolls though - I always wanted a big family and they are my children, just generic with no real personality. The big 1/3 adult type dolls aren't my 'family' though - they are ideals of physical perfection, or they represent different aspects of my personality, so I choose them more carefully than the tinies - they have to be just right facially, and I have to like the company faceup too, as I like them to arrive painted and 'complete' - I don't really want to work on my dolls, I just want to enjoy their company :)

    11. I'm not completely sure its a single thing. It first it was all about the clothes. Do I want to invest time and money into dressing this doll? They were more like really pretty mannequins. But now their body shape and jointing have become much more important to me. (Leading to my current DC Christina / Dolores obsession). I can't wait to dress them:D

    12. I look at dolls primarily to shell my characters. When I see a company whose sculpts I like, I'll look at their minis and see if any of them fit a character who needs a doll avatar. Other times, dolls I find beautiful will develop their own characters within my world. Doll Chateau's Hugh did that--I originally wanted one to shell a character who found a better sculpt, and then my friend told me a yumekui doll would be cool. I love the inhuman look of some DC bodies, so I decided on Hugh for the character who would become Hikaru. Other sculpts go on my wish list until I create a character who fits. DollZone's Carter was like that. I wanted a girl Carter, but I didn't have a plan for her until I came up with Fallon.

It's really character first, for me.

    13. For about half of mine, it's to bring characters to life, the other half I just really liked. Usually I'll go through pictures looking at the head sculpts and if I fall in love with one, it goes on the wishlist! So I have a list of dolls I want to get...eventually. Price is also a pretty big factor, as well as the fact that I have a preference for MSDs at the moment.

    14. I seem to have three reasons:

      1. Its an anthro/animal sculpt I just love. I see it, and that's it. LOVE I have a long wish list of animal bjds I want as we speak.

      2. On girls its usually the face. The body's I'm not too particular about, other than not too busty. On faces I like a certain symmetry to their faces that are unique, but not too "odd". For example I think Amara by doll leaves is a very unique attractive sculpt. Its quite easy to pick out from the crowd. I'm very picky about chins, space between the eyes, and nose length. I get really annoyed when I can't find a profile pic of the sculpt I am interested in. lol

      3. Skin color- I'm very into greys right now.

    15. I come from a Roleplay background and finding BJD's has now given me the opportunity to bring my Original Characters into the real world in a different way. I'm very excited to start looking and bring to life my characters! (Not in a literal sense, haha) So finding one that seems to bring these characters to life... I melt a bit inside at this reality!

    16. Do you mean...why do I want to buy a BJD?

This brings me back to the first time I saw a BJD. I was never into dolls so here, all of a sudden, I was being attracted to dolls?? well, the whole idea of CREATING your own doll is what drove me to buy my first BJD and it is also what still drives me to keep buying BJDs. There is no other doll like my doll, even if most of them are basic dolls which means that many people have the same doll (same mold) but the creation is mine and that creation becomes MY doll and that doll becomes unique to me.

    17. For me, it was the fact that these dolls were large boys (the first doll I saw in person was a CP Chiwoo) and had adult proportions. Combined with the fact that you could customize them into something that was truly your own and I was sold immediately, even though I never really looked at dolls before.
