What I didn't understand, but now I do*

Jan 18, 2022

    1. How can people have multiple dolls on order? Why would you shop for another doll when the first (or three) hadn't even arrived yet?

      - because six months can be a horrifically long time and there's always new dolls coming out.
      - because shopping is downright addicting and once you realize all the combinations you can make, welp
that's a rabbit hole you'll never get out of again.
      - the anticipation is almost better than the doll itself.

-Tiny order windows for holiday dolls or specialties. That's a good reason too.

Why bother with customizing, the Fullsets are amazing and complete! LOOK at those PICTURES

      - it's a little harder to get the character of a doll down when it's all finished and polished for you.
      - Are you making a doll for a character, or making a character for the doll? Either one works but it's a lot
harder to change something on a doll who just cost you 500, 600, 700 for a very specific look.
      - faceups are done by hand, they will almost never match the photo exactly.
      - Filters, filters, filters and artsy photos that will never show the whole doll OR outfit. #NO MORE FILTERS

They're going to sit on a shelf, why would you spend more money on doll clothes than your own wardrobe?

      - Because.
      - Fight me.

*To clarify, not one expensive outfit that they wear while on the shelf, I mean a whole wardrobe of expensive clothes when they may or may not be changed but once or twice a year. Or month.

Buying props wont be listed as 'I didn't understand' because I DID/DO understand this. When it comes to items like chairs or art supplies-the smaller they are the cuter they are. Now I just have a better 'reason' to 'need' them!

*To be updated as I travel this weary road.

    2. your last point was a callout :p
I totally feel this though. BJDs are such an addicting rabbit hole for sure.

    3. I used to question how folk could have multiple dolls on order :sweat but I'm one of them now. Have multiple Yosd's on order and lots of heads. Your last comment I wholeheartedly agree with, spend money on what makes you happy :)

    4.

Most of my dolls this hasn't been a problem, since the only clothes that fit properly are handmade by me to their measurements. My most recent doll has been another story. The only justification I have is that I have a perfectly functional wardrobe and have concluded that I will only add to it when I find something Truly Quality (or I need more t-shirts - rare) whereas she has one pair of jeans and one sweater. I at least have... three pairs of jeans and enough shirts I only need to do laundry once a week. And a lovely sweater collection.

Also, my dolls don't just sit on a shelf. I take them out to pretty places for photos and I don't want their clothes to look ridiculous when I do. I'm allowed to look totally absurd, but they gotta look good.

    5. One big factor: so many of these dolls are only available for pre-order for a limited time. If I see something I really like I jump on it, no matter if I'm still waiting for other dolls.
I have six on order right now, but all very small. ;)

    6. *Buys cheap department store clothes for herself then hops on Etsy and spends £100+ on outfits for a doll the currently lives in a box because she has no space to display everything at once* I see nothing wrong here. -spirals- >3> Lol.
I used to limit myself on when I would buy dolls. It was almost exclusively for my birthday. I left the hobby to move to another country to be with my best friend and now husband, and just recently got a new job. I now have 2 dolls in shipping (one second hand and one from DDE stock) and 2 fullsets and a head on preorder. My husband, bless his soul, has finally stopped me. No more dolls until I get the ones on preorder, which knowing DV will be sometime in the next two years. XD (The long wait is how I got him to agree to the two that are currently in transit.) -shrugs- It makes me happy and life is too short to not buy things that make me happy. As long as we can keep our bellies full and a roof over our head. (I’m also not the only one, he’s been buying limited Lego sets and parts for his car xD)
It’s such a deep rabbit hole though! So many great artists out there, from faceups to clothes to the dolls themselves. @3@

    7. I too fall into the "$5 for me $50 for thee dolly" when it comes to clothes. But I justify this because my own personal clothes are going to be worn, sweated in, may get stains, washed, and suffer all kinds of abuse. I don't mind if I accidentally rip a $2 thrift shop shirt or if it no longer fits me due to weight loss/gain. That $100 doll outfit? That's staying on a doll that doesn't sweat. It won't be washed weekly causing it to fade. (Though sun expose may do this.) I won't be eating food with it directly below me. The doll won't magical be unable to wear it one day. (Unless reshelled.) And I can later sell that doll outfit for near what I initially paid on top of this. A $30 human t-shirt won't sell for $30 used. (Not including collectors items or certain fashion but let's be honest most clothes aren't in that category because of fast fashion.) Doll clothes are more of an investment. Not saying I buy doll things to sell, this is just how I justify prices to myself.

    8. I went the other way with fullsets. When I first got into the hobby, I accepted other people liked fullsets, but I did not "get it" since customizing, to me, is the best part. Fastforward and sometimes the company look is just right or good enough, and at least I will have one outfit that actually fits the doll even if it is not the look for the character I have in mind. I have still only bought one fullset, but I have a couple others I got secondhand with company faceups that I have kept.

I think the dolls sitting around is a reason to get them nicer clothes than I get for myself. I had two custom rococo-ish silk suits made for one of my dolls years ago, and they still looks great. Really, all of the Dollheart stuff and other ornate clothes I have for my dolls are still in good condition. If I wore something like that my cat would snag it within minutes, and I would probably spill something on it.

I think the biggest thing I have realized is that I really do not need to buy every item that looks scaled to my BJDs because random dishes, tiny books, wax warmers that look like ovens, or whatever will always turn up. I used to buy so many small items at thrift stores, craft stores, and toy sections, I amassed a ridiculous collection of small things I had no use for.

    9. I'm still in that mindset, LOL. My Most Beloved is a 1/3 and I can't help but take a peak in the toy aisles of stores now. He has a lunchbox of plastic food, a set of art supplies, a backpack meant to be a keychain... It's all so cute! Obnoxiously plastic perhaps, but I have this vague idea that I can re-paint the worst ones. He sits beautifully in this fluffy round chair thing, I think it was meant for an American Girl, though only if he's on the edge of a shelf because his loooooong legs need to dangle further than the chair allows.

    10. Yeah. I laughed out loud.

    11. LOL! I went for years without buying a new doll because Wiishu already stole all the time I had and Morgaine and Vanye still don't have their proper outfits, but this year I finally found the shells for my two main OCs and got them both at the same time, and because Granado was having an anniversary sale and because I started haunting the Granado threads, I got several of the small guys as well. It was nuts! Now...I've got work for the next ten years!

I also am not interested in full sets. Wiishu and Pookii invaded my home, and their wardrobes and personalities have developed over the years, but the others I have are all OCs with specific looks. Most of the full set clothes I've seen aren't made that well and definitely don't fit the way I want, so I just make my own.

As for cute stuffs...I can't walk an aisle now without Wiishu in the back of my head going "oooo! oooo! C'n I habs dat? Pweeeese?" :D

    12. I currently have 3 BJDs on order.:doh Well…sometimes it just happens, right? One had the perfect look to be the long-sought best friend of one of my beloved boys. Another was a PERFECT match to my life-long love of religious iconography. And a third was a seldom done release of a tiny, whose type is the only thing still left on my wishlist. So yeah…it just happens.:sweat Ordinarily I’d stretch 3 purchases out over an entire year (and pretty much have for each of the past 16 years.) But all of these BJDs were time limited all at once, so it forced my hand.

As for clothes, I can justify it for two reasons. One, I make 90% of their clothes myself so buying something special doesn’t feel overly extravagant because I buy so few of them. And two, my love of all kinds of fashion styles was the reason I got into collecting these dolls in the first place. So to me, their clothing is as much a collectible as the dolls themselves.:)

    13. I want one or two bjds more, but i have no space for them now( No space and time, to be honest. To craft something for dolls i need particular mood or even atmosphere around me. And i don't have it now and will not have for the next few years at least.

    14. I used to question why anybody would buy such expensive clothes when there were cheap options. Until I caved and got some expensive clothes, and it's undeniable that there is a huge difference in quality most of the time. On some very basic items, maybe not much, but a OOAK tailored dress made from top quality materials with tiny in scale details is going to cost a lot more than that $10 dress on AliExpress, and for good reason. I'm not saying it's in any way bad or wrong to be satisfied with the cheaper stuff! I still buy a lot of it! But I do now understand why some things are so much higher priced, and why people will buy it.

And when I was new to the hobby, I didn't understand why anybody would want girl dolls. The doll world was oversaturated with female dolls, couldn't you find a girl you liked for a heck of a lot cheaper than a BJD? Variety in BOYS was what was needed! But somewhere along the lines, my tastes shifted, I tried owning girls, and they're so much more than a glorified Barbie! I now have more girls than boys. :)

I think at this point, I've just stopped questioning why anybody would want something or do something, because I'll probably answer my own question in time.

    15. Yes if you miss some limited dolls, you might end up buying them at a very high price in the future

    16. I didn't understand why people RAGED over Fairylands. They almost saw it as a holy entity and i found it rather dumb...
13 years later and i own 2... one on the way... Sad i missed one... Yeah... uhm... *cough*
I wouldn't say i'm as fanatic as i've witnessed some being. But i fell in love with a Lucywen with a custom faceup, then Alan, then Miwa. I like how easy it is to change them up, switch hands, switch heads and feet.

I didn't understand how people could have as many as 70+ dolls.
Well... I do now, i don't have as many. But if i had more room i'd drown in dolls. There's SOOOO many out there and sooo many beautiful ones.

There's probably more, but not that i can think of.

    17. It took me several years to understand that just because a doll is SD-sized, that they don't all wear 8-9 wigs :nowords::doh

Some of my dolls spent too much time wearing wigs that looked like their heads were being eaten, despite using those soft plastic people bracelets to fill the gaps. Moral of this little story -- wish I'd bought more 7-8 wigs, epecially older Volks MSD size, and Moniques before they went out of business.

    18. I've been sitting here trying to figure out why my dolls are so attractive. They are big and unruly, I buy them beautiful clothes and all they do is stand there and stare back at me. But I love changing them out. I love the details in the dolls themselves, in the clothes. I really enjoy period costumes, so they get to wear pretty dresses and the men look dashing...or maybe not depending on the mood. Then I feel it's time for them to enter the modern world and they get changed up again.

I guess it comes down to them bringing me joy. I like to create clothes and accessories for them too and that brings me joy. I like taking pictures and sharing the pictures and interacting with the people who also enjoy the pictures. There is alot of positive to me having my dolls....and in the end that is what keeps bringing me back.

And I am a sucker for a beautiful full set. Especially something that I cannot reproduce. They wear clothes that I never could and I love that!

    19. OMG! Doesn't that just say it all!

    20. What I didn't understand, but now I do . . . is that BJDs would become my all-consuming passion. It's all I can do to keep from "talking dolls" with everyone I know. Only one of my friends will tolerate "doll talk". :D:D:D
