What if our dolls had Jointed Fingers?

Feb 21, 2006

    1. While it sounds neat, I don't really like the idea. Think how tiny the balljoints would have to be and how fragile they'd be! And I just don't think the hands would look very elegant...

Ok, I guess what I'm trying to say is it would be great if someone could pull it off really, really well and still make the hands beautiful.

If anyone could post or link to pictures of BJDs with articulated hands, that would be great, though. :D

    2. I would love it, but it might be complicated. As an optional second set, that would be great, in case something when wrong, but not as the primary hands...

    3. bump for added thought * located on main thread.

    4. hm. If I were to try it, I think I'd cast pre-existing hands with a soft rubber and have a wire armature underneath(edges of wire capped to postpone the even stab-through, of course). But I wouldn't try it at all. And the rubber would probably match funny.

    5. No thanks. The smaller the joints, the easier they would break. >.<

    6. I was thinking about this earlier today when I was trying to get my boy to hang from a tree branch (yeah, smart, I know...). I decided that, while useful, jointed hands probably wouldn't be as pretty. It'd feel strange holding a bumpy hand full of joints as opposed to holding the soft little hand I'm so used to.

=) Now if they invented some magical technology that allowed hands to be jointed AND pretty, then I'm all for it.

    7. I love Volks' current hands, I would never want something like these x_x I prefer aesthetics over extreme joints.

    8. jointed hand fingers?...to me that's kinda scary ^ ^;...

    9. Wow! Amazing stuff. It's interesting to know the origin of your striking avatar. I'd been trying to match it up with your dolls!

    10. I think it would be really interesting :)
But I would still want to have non jointed hands as well because they are so beautiful :cake:

    11. Maybe if it worked sort of like a DDII? Have a rigid jointed inner frame, and then some kind of plastic covering that would look like a normal hand and bend with the joints. You'd probably lose a little mobility that way, but it would preserve the aesthetic to a degree... Don't think you'd get anything as lovely and delicate as CP's hands, but you might get something like the chubbier Volks hands.

    12. I would love to see hands that can move, but are coverd in silicon/vinyl/something else
so that you can't see the joints, and then with an inner skeleton so you don't have to string them

I believe some of the neo-guy dollfies by volks have (optional)hands with visible joints, and I don't like the look

    13. Most people have suggested that the hands would be problematic because of their stringing. Why would they be strung? As Ezzora says - a vinyl covered armature would be perfect. No visible joints, easy to attach and remove from the arm.

As an optional extra, I think movable hands would be a fantastic accessory for photoshoots, but would still prefer to have solid resin hands as a default.

    14. I'd like it a lot cause I totally enjoy the joints as part of my dolls beauty!, I'd be worried about breaking them thought cause they would be quite fragile no? and of course I'll keep the normal hands for more "real-looking" shots

    15. It's an interesting idea, and it has its merits, but I can't say I like the way it would look. Too many joints in a very small space--I'm afraid they would be clunky looking.

    16. The idea is an attractive one: poseable hands would be so versatile and useful in photoshoots and photostories!
However, I think that having multiple visible joints in the hands would be too jarring and visually unattractive for my tastes and purposes (I know some people like the "doll-like" look and could use it to great artistic effect, but not me).
So I'm happy with Volks' excellent optional hand/foot changing system: you don't have to unstring the entire doll and you can change out different poses of hands/feet in less than a minute. I do wish they'd cast more poses/optional parts, though (MSDs have 6-8 different hand poses as of right now, some pics). I can think of several I'd like to see. :)
The only way I can see myself taking to poseable hands is if they were constructed of a hard, flexible inner frame with a seamless outer (like in some Volk 1/6th dollfies). That way the beauty of the hand is retained. ^_^ Unfortunately, resin isn't flexible like the vinyl used for the 1/6th dollfies.

    17. Well.. To those saying ' It'd be too small and fragile'
Volks used to have jointed fingers for the 1/6 dolls. Neo Goh Guy, or something like that ^^;; Definately tinier.

    18. The Narin Doll artist has already designed ball jointed fingers, but I'm not sure if they will be released to the public.
I think it's pretty cool, and I would like to have a pair, but I would still like the option of having the delicate, simple hands.

    19. I'd worry about the gestures Kai would make if he had jointed fingers. So it's probably a good thing that his fingers are all attached together...

Spends too much time playing with dolls...

      EDITED for lame spelling mistakes!...
