What if our dolls had Jointed Fingers?

Feb 21, 2006

    1. I have thought about this before, and came to the conclusion that I am absolutely opposed to jointed fingers/hands. First they never move realistically, second they don't feel right, and third they look akward.
These are not assumptions, just things I have observed from playing with various action figures and dolls that are jointed past the wrist. As for having an inner armature covered with something pliable, well these too have limitations. Such as when moved the 'skin' tends to ball up and make lumpy areas. Plus, these also tend to rip, and no it won't heal like real skin (I've lost far to many action figures that way:().

    2. Seconding this sentiment--I love the hands because, as they are, they are very expressive. I'm not sure if I'd be able to pose the hands so expressively otherwise.

    3. I would still prefer rigid hands. Jointed hands (especially on the smaller scale) never quite get the right look or feel. I like the way the sculpted hands look, and don't feel limited that the fingers don't move individually.

    4. that would be so cool! They probably wouldn't look as beautiful, and would be easily broken, but I would love it if it worked! you could add so much more personality in a pose.

    5. ooohh! Mimi! <3 Thanks for sharing this with us. I wonder who made that and the gloves do look quite sexy. ^_^

    6. I don't mind jointed hands on action figures, but I think they wouldn't look as nice as the fully sculpted hands. Unless the technology gets amazingly better, I doubt the jointed hands would look as elegant...

    7. I like how the hands look on some Gundam models I've seen, at least for posability. I was thinking the knucles could be like mini versions of the elbow and knee joints my Obitsu has. They'd look reasonably like knucles, and no strings needed. :) (And an android chracter would look awesome!)

    8. When thinking about it I'd say I may like the jointed fingers, depending on how it's made. Even with obviously jointed digits, I can use gloves over the hands or it would, at least, give the option of the dolls wearing actual gloves more easier. Cause with preset hands for the most part you can't give them the kind of gloves that cover each little finger unless the fingers are already spreaded somewhat or the gloves are made over the hands already. So I'd say, it'll be good to have the option of obtaining such hands, if only for the fact of having gloves over them :3 But like I've said depends on how it's made.

    9. I have a Volks 1/6 dollfie with vinyl hands, and I made them posable just by sticking wire through the fingers. It's really handy (pardon the pun :P), and when I get my DDII body I'm going to do the same thing with her. I think it could probably be done for a resin doll, too. The vinyl would have to match the resin really well, but it would look more realistic than jointed hands, IMHO.

    10. I would love to see this!

    11. then monthly re-stringing would be a nightmare... oh dear oh dear...
      but still...
      I'D LOVE IT!!

    12. Well, although everyone here has had many good opinions, I still have to say that I would prefer the jointed hands. When I was very little, I went to my grandmothers house and she let me play with a very old Barbie doll *hopes she won't get jumped for saying the "B" word* and this doll had jointed fingers! her hands were incredibly tiny, same as today, but the joints were so well done that it didn't inhibit the elegance or shape of the hands any, and when put into a pose they held quite well (although I suppose that would depend on how well the doll is taken care of). I think the big pitfall would be the cost to create such hands would increase the cost of the dolls pretty dramatically, and I know we wouldn't want that; these dolls are expensive already...-_- I also agree with those who point out that stringing would be unnecessary, if the joints are tight enough on their own, or if they had those neato silicone washers that some dolls are appearing with, then there would be no need for strings

    13. Hmm... it seems like an interesting idea. Only, if they're optional hands, why would they have to be strung like the doll it's self? Why not pin joints? It might go against the function of the rest of the doll but, it would work better than tiny strung fingers, and would be much harder to break since the hand would be mostly solid. It would also be able to have the same form of attachment to the elastic in the arm that way.

      Just an idea, really, even if it's not a very good one. ^^;

    14. I'd be all over the option of jointed fingers. Imagine the possibilities! :D They could do so much more, like actually *hold* stuff. I wonder if a company will ever make something like this...?

    15. I wonder all the time. I'm sure it's possible to make such hands. Costly, but I'm sure they'd be able to do them just as beautiful.

    16. I would explode with glee and buy emidetly.

    17. i would go insane worried that they would break @_@ its a neat idea..and it WOULD be cool..but i work myself into gray hairs just worrying with Kodona's faceup already >_>

    18. If they made these for BJD I would totally get a male pair in each skin color and a female pair in each skin color. Yep, most definitely. :)

I really like the sculpt hands that come with my dolls, but it would be cool to have an optional pair that had a full-range of movement too. :cake:

    19. I wouldnt mind at all, you could pose there fingers better
when holding stuff like guns and such and erm..
I want it to show the finger :whee:
But I would also keep the normal hands as
well cuase they are very nice :3nodding:

    20. Well, if they can string something as small as a tiny Elfdoll... But the whole armature with covering idea sounds like it would work a lot better.
I would love to be able to move my souldoll's hands... Or even change them. They're really in an awkward pose :P... So afraid her finger will snap off
