Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. What inspires your doll's names?

May 3, 2016

    1. I don't put much effort in naming (for dolls, pets, etc)
I just give them a name that pops up in my head, nothing fancy.
I don't know why but it makes me feel more cozy with the subject that I'm giving the name.

    2. My doll represents a tree spirit based on a tree planted 22 years ago that I named Walt (a rather uncreative name, as we planted him as our Christmas tree that year since we were taking a rare out of state family vacation to Walt Disney World over Christmas break). As the character grew and evolved in my mind, I wanted something a little more fantastical, so I settled on Walthari as his "real" name. I still call him Walt, though. xD;;

    3. Mine are all named after flowers. No two girls are named after the same plant, and siblings may have similar sounding names, like Yu Wei and Yu Lian.

    4. Mainly characters from movies/ books such as, lord of the rings, Alice in wonderland, Harry Potter, mortal instruments, Percy Jackson. Of course I name my dolls after other things too but I try to purposely name them roughly from these.

    5. Lysander was named for the love interest of a character in a novel set in Ancient Greece. The physical description somewhat matched what I had in my head, and I guess I felt the character didn't get enough screen time in the book, so I may have been subconsciously offering for him to live on.

Gailan is a nonsense name I made up. He was going to be just Gail, which I thought sounded elegant without being frumpy, but I didn't realize that was a woman's name at the time, and preferred two syllables, so I tweaked it. Also, Hunger Games happened shortly after I created his character and I didn't appreciate the proximity.

Uriah... I wanted a known but antiquated name. An old man's name. In contrast to his personality, I wanted a name with no hard edges. Something that sounded nice spoken intimately under one's breath. I came up with it lying awake one night and knew it was biblical but couldn't remember where. Turned out 'Uriah' was a soldier who was sent to the front lines to die when King David decided he wanted his wife. This has proven to have some interesting parallels in my story.

In general I like old, historic names that just edge on sounding frumpy. I don't have any children yet, but I have some names in mind for them that I am careful not to accidentally attach to any dolls...

    6. My first doll, I ended up having her character be from Scotland, so I looked up Scottish/gaelic names and picked one I liked, which ended up being Nora :3 we will see if it sticks once she arrives though!

For all of them I will probably do that. I tend to look at baby name websites all the time for this cuz I have a hard time picking on my own xD sometimes I'll look up all names, sometimes I'll search for "names that start with [letter]" sometimes I'll look up "names that mean [something, e.g. names that mean strength]".

It has helped me a lot both with roleplaying in the past and my art! :)

    7. Random stuff. Honest to god, could not tell you where Deej came from. Sparrow was because sparrows were extremely trendy when I received her (I'm old.) and I knew I wanted her to have a bird-like name. I always just liked the name Aimee. Vida is a really beautiful name that matched her ethnicity. July is because she's meant to be a personification of my since-passed dog, who was born in July.

    8. I had a dream, in my dream, 2 of my dolls SD13 Isao and SD16 Yukinojou were real humans, live size people. Yukinojou was very quiet, very sad, serious, he sat next to me, unable to say anything except that "...all that needs to be said has already been said by Isao". Isao was very talkative, he introduced himself as Anthony. So, I named him Anthony. I retained Yukinojou's company assigned name "Joe" and extended that to "Joseph".

The F38 was named Christian because he looked like Christian. It suits him. He was suppose to be cast as Himura Kenshin but he was not oriental enough, so I named him Christian Himura. He has a Japanese father and Scandinavian mother. He's a distant descendant of Kenshin. He cosplays Kenshin and I do sometimes refer to him as Kenshin. I do not want to scar him, I am not in favor of scared dolls. I add the scar on his face using Photoshop.

    9. I like older names, so this is where I tend to start when looking, but inspiration can come from songs, movies, books, real life, etc. I am looking to rename one of my dolls because I loved how the name Kit sounded in the new Cinderella, so I looked up three letter names/nicknames and liked Kai, and would have it be short for Malachi/Malachai (means my messenger, my angel). Its meaning is also fitting yet a bit ironic since his character is going to be a dark angel or demon.

    10. Naming anything is the hardest thing for me. So I'll have a completed character, but no name. But I also don't rush to pick names, the perfect one will come eventually.

    11. I really not good at naming, so my dolls' name is following their official name or their personality, for example, soom's zak I called him uncle Zak, and another doll I called him sleepy, cause he looks like always want to sleep

    12. I like so much writters names or characters from books. I also like boy names for girls.

    13. I choose things that fit their personality or theme. I have a doll whose color scheme is blue and gold. Azure + gold, Azuld. easy :)

    14. Ugh my first doll isn't here and I'm already having a hard time with names for her XD I keep gravitating toward names of characters from shows or books that I really love, because I have emotional attachment to those names kinda? Because I love their character. But that feels like I'm stealing a character, and so I really want to just name her something that I have no attachment too, but that's hard because I don't know if I like it or I just honestly can't think of anything unique enough, it's driving me crazy lol

    15. nothing special. Just go for whaterver sounds right for them and that is the name:XD:

    16. The dolls I have planned are based on characters that already have names in pop culture, but the only one I do have isn't. I named him Anatole after a character on a book cover that had a similar expression to his sculpt since that's what I thought of when I first saw him. They don't really have anything in common otherwise, but it was what I was calling him instantly.

    17. Since Switch has chinese character name for almost every dolls, all of my Switch's doll names based on their chinese character name.
My ryuzo (琉照) which means shining lapiz lazuli named Soshi(蒼士) meaning blue warrior
Ryun:R (淪) means ripple on the water. So, I named him Seiya (清也) = purify
Sohwa (昭華) = Shining youth, named Mirai (未来= Future) but with the chinese chracter of tomorrow(明日) which also mean Shining day
I love how Switch named their doll the meaning is very beautiful. At first, I want to named my doll in Korean but my Korean skill is not enought to named a doll. So I use japanese instead.

    18. Noah is the name of a character I had before I got into Bjds,
Amelia is a name I searched for on baby name websites after the one I originally picked for her didn't fit at all.
My new girl will probably named Kateleen after a person from a forum I was in many years ago. (if it fits, if not I' ll change it)

    19. I don't know. I guess it would depend on the doll's personality and looks?
For sure personality though. For my first doll, I kinda want her to have a Korean name...
I PROMISE YOU I AM NOT A KOREABOO PLEASE DON'T KILL ME AAAHHHH! XD

    20. I really like cute names that most people don't have in real life :kitty2 e.g Jelly,Freya,Hina
