1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

What is Your Favorite Thing About DoA?

Aug 23, 2023

    1. All true.
Something that is super cool about DoA is that because it's well organized, easy to search and all that, I can get the idea that I want to try a new craft, find a tutorial and try it out without having to ask for it. Sure, if I am having trouble or can't find what I'm looking for I can still ask, but much of the time I don't have to. I can try things out im my own little private bubble and I chose if i want to share it or not.
In pure numbers of views/comments/likes/interaction etc. that content miners are looking for, that looks like a low level of engagement, but to me as an individual hobbyist, being able to find what I look for in the first place is the function that benefits me. I never could stand the automated "you'll want to see this too" that so many platforms are bogged down with. And a computer can't see the hours I then spend following that tutorial, and if that is not a truer form of engagement than an extra click or two by someone only casually interested who got it shoved in their face, I don't know what is. It's a human aspect, invisible to the data miners.
And even more amazing: That tutorial could be a decade old and still absolutely invaluable to me. The user who wrote it is still contributing, even if they haven't posted a single thing since. Making sure that their content is still available and easy to find respects the time and effort they put into it originally. And we all benefit.

The more I think about it, it's kind of the same idea as sustainablility in any other field. Waste is always bad, it doesn't matter if it's good clothes that never got worn because of overproduction of low quality stuff and prize dumping, or if it's valuable content never seen because it got washed away in the flood of the next new thing. Waste is waste.

This is a great topic, BTW.

    2. Someone really did try that. Not very well, but that's what the captions were saying it was supposed to be. They're the reason I learned how to use the block function on Instagram. I'm glad DoA has less NSFW stuff and what's there is either labeled or obvious that the area will contain it. It's very easy to stay away.

Another thing- all the dedicated project journals. It's fun to go back through them and having a lot of journals in one place is so much easier than trying to search the entire internet.

    3. Like a lot of people have mentioned, I really love how easy it is to find things. I also love how relaxed it is and the years of history. One of my favorite things to do is just browse older doll discussion forums :)

    4. I’m also coming from instagram to DOA! I’m new to collecting BJDs entirely, I’ve seen & loved them for a while, but never got into them until recently. The thing I love the most about DOA being a newbie is the endless access to all the forums. It’s really helpful to be able to go back through and read to gain more insight! I feel like I could sit and read for hours on end lol. I find with instagram there definitely can be conflict, but I try to mitigate this by limiting who I interact with to only people who aren’t like that. Seems there can be a lot of judgement, but sticking to solid people helps!

    5. I'm glad you are enjoying the topic! :) One thing about Instagram in particular -- I always used to post my wip photos on my story, and I rarely used the highlights feature, so basically all that sharing went away after 24 hours never to be seen again. Now that I'm on DOA, I'm starting to see the value in posting a thread and then it just stays there for others to enjoy for years to come, and maybe even learn something from it if they want to.

Bruh... that's just crazy. :? Even the ads on IG are sometimes nsfw -- I would not have a problem browsing DOA at work though. And the project journals are so neat! I'm hoping to create some of my own before too too long.

I've been browsing as well. :love Even if I don't post, it's so fun to go back and see what people have said. There's so much to learn from older topics. And it's pretty cool that by posting in an older one, it brings it back up to the top of the first page for others to possibly enjoy as well! Overall, I think a forum makes a much better format for community than social media does.

Welcome to DOA! I'm so glad you've come here from IG. That community absolutely has good things, but here, we don't have to try so hard to avoid the bad things. :whee: All the information here is amazing! It's like if something's been done, it's pretty much on here or someone here knows about it. Being able to join a community like that feels great.

    6. I mostly enjoy DOA because of the slow paced communicating (like in discord, if you are not there the whole discussion might have already changed) and it's easy to find information I need. I also really like project journals -part and box openings. I also deleted instagram like a week ago (can't even find new doll pictures anymore via hasthags, so what's the point even being there?), it has become so annoing to use. I like how here I can find conversations about dolls I'm interested in and find easily other peoples photos of the same doll I have <3.

One of my biggest things I enjoy about DOA is that there's no pressure here. To post or comment or being online 24/7. I can visit here daily or once in a month and I'm always feeling this relaxing thought that I have time to browse here and use it for as long as I want that day. With social media, if you have been gone for like a week you usually are bombed with so many photos and conversations in your feed that it feels like a task to check them all (plus you have to see like 20 adds between those). So, shortly said: I'm here to relax and this forum let's me relax.

    7. I feel this completely. Content bomb is the top reason I left I lot of my Discord servers. I could be gone a day, or even a few hours, and come back to 55+ messages. Way too overwhelming and stressful for me. I wanted to reply or take part in the conversations but it was just impossible to reply to everyone :(

    8. DoA can be pretty strict regarding guidelines and rules, but I like it mostly because it is a safe space for all kinds of people in the hobby to talk, learn, and make connections.
THere is always something to talk about and something new to learn on DoA.

    9. Despite the emergence of new BJD groups and forums in different platforms, I still come back to DoA because of how easy it is to search for certain sculpts and topics, as well as join conversations. :)

    10. Ease of accessibility except for the 'make a new post' button. That could be placed 100x more conveniently.

    11. There are a lot of great things about DoA.

I really like the people here. Interacting with others and sharing in conversations about their dolls and mine has got to be one of the biggest things I like about it. The way that people support each other in crafting and working on their doll projects, or helping each other out with questions and answers shows great camaraderie between the people here.

I also being able to look up questions that I may have about certain dolls, or finding owners of these dolls and asking them questions that I might have before purchasing, as well as seeing other owners pictures or the dolls. The resources and data base is very helpful.

    12. I love the patience and kindness that other doll hobbyists show me here on DOA. I know that I’m not the easiest person to get along with. I’m diagnosed with both autism and bipolar disorder, so my moods can become pretty chaotic and I have a pretty poor grasp of social skills. But nobody is ever mean to me. They might give me helpful advice about my dolls, or just let me rant until my mind eventually stops racing. This is a safe space for me and I’m so glad that I can share my passion for dolls with everyone.

    13. First of all this is by far the most helpful, friendly and patient community I've ever been in despite such a huge variety of people from different walks of life. I like the forum format because it's slower and the pace of activity is more suited to human beings than stuff like Instagram. And I love the dura lex sed lex stance on rules and especially bootlegs which other communities only pretend to have.

    14. At this point with my tenure, DoA is such a sentimental place for me. Huge part of my hobby journey has started here, I have explored so many aspects of this hobby thanks to DoA and lovely people here. Some friendships made here are pretty much forever! The world has changed a lot all these years but DoA holds the same, fuzzy and warm feel to me. Love getting back here once in a while. <3

    15. My favorite thing about DoA is that it's a forum.

Forums were going the way of the dodo by the time I really came up as an internet denizen (between the MySpace and Facebook generations), but I sincerely loathe how social media and apps have replaced dedicated websites and hobby forums. These spaces are invaluable wells of information about the hobby and various aspects of customization, from sewing to painting to character studies to companies and sculpts and so on and so forth, many of which have little staying power and are lost in the grinding gears of social media marketing. Coming back to a forum like this, where the pace is slower and the information has a chance to linger, allows for a more robust communication between hobbyists. Discord and other messaging apps have tried to recreate the magic of forums, but due to their fast-paced text message style, it's easy to miss out on interesting, important information if you aren't plugged in 24/7.

I also love how DoA is a vestige of when the internet was a place you intentionally sought out and entered, rather than the omni-present version of it we live with today.

    16. I might be new here, but I already have two favorite things. The first one is... the sheer amount of information and resources! There's so much valuable input here, from art/crafting tips to obscure information on the dolls themselves. DoA is a wonderful little time capsule and should be treasured.

The second thing I love is the sedate pace and stronger sense of community that you only get in Ye Olde Forum spaces. I spent so much time on forums back in the day, forums are like an old comfort blanket for me. Something of a shelter from the frenetic, exhausting pace of modern social media. I can express a full thought, with a comfortable amount of characters for clarity's sake, and someone might actually read and comprehend it instead of half-reading and exploding into a fit of impotent rage over an imagined slight! :XD:

I've seen plenty of people accuse DoA of being toxic, but as someone who is professionally forced to deal with social media, I can confidently say there's nothing more toxic than unmoderated spaces with absolutely zero gatekeeping. Very happy to be back in an environment that's truly (and virtually exclusively) about our shared interest, rather than out in the open where anyone can casually drop by to ruin your day and/or drag you kicking and screaming away from your escapism.

    17. As others have stated, it has to be the no-pressure way to participate in the hobby.
If I don't see my IG daily, I loose the content posted by the users I follow, same with Discord and other platforms. I'm in my mid-thirties now and have a stressful life besides a handful of hobbies and sometimes I get worried I'm gonna feel left out of the BJD world because I can't put hours in everyday for my dolls.
But I can always come to DoA and keep track of the news and the things I'm interested about, my favorite users are here, there's so many interesting discussion topics... Never change, DoA.

    18. I spent some years at an OT doll forum where moderators encouraged drama and putting down others. Den of Angels is much better curated, and I enjoy the lack of ragebait.

      • x 1
    19. First of all, it's nice to see how different people enjoy the same hobby.
How different two people can interpret the same sculpt. It's just amazing to me.

Also, I definitely get inspiration from here. Not only for my dolls, but seeing others be creative and good at crafting motivates me to not give up on it even though I'm like... really really bad at artsy stuff. :sweat

Lastly, my life is stressful enough and DoA is really chill. You can disappear for a while and still not be overwhelmed by new content you've missed once you decide to come back.
