What is your grail doll, and why is it your grail?

Feb 3, 2015

    1. Oooo, I don't think I can pick just one doll right now. I think my "perfect" doll won't be created as the perfection is all in my head, unless I make it myself or get it custom made. Then it'll be a doll to keep forever.

    2. Thats amazing! Congrats!! Do you have any pics of the doll?

    3. I really want 玖月 made by the owner of taobao shop plateform 9 3/4. I have talking to her about it for over 3 months. And she said she will the pre-order available after she moved.

    4. Hah! You're out of luck. Here's another picture for you:

    8. If I could only ever have one doll in my collection, it would be my Resinsoul Mei. I could never part with her! But if you mean my grail doll, then it's Ringdoll's Daniel-B fullset. His sculpt, his faceup, his wig, his clothes- every aspect of him makes my heart burst with joy! I'm trying to save up to get him, but the fullset is so terribly expensive and medical issues and college eat up every last one of my pennies.

    9. I have a serveral grail dolls. They are all rare limited Volks dolls. The One I want the most and is #1 is Volks SD Shinku. I would never sale her if I ever got her.

    10. Oh. that one is so Pretty

    11. When I first got into bjds, I went through the companies that the person who introduced me to them owned. One of those was Fairyland. I looked around at many other sites that I saw mentioned and in my early days I was convinced I'd have a Puki Pipi (who ended up being my first doll) a Resinsoul Mei and a MNF Ruth.

Since then a few dolls have come home but not one of them the Mei or Ruth. While Mei still is cute whenever I pass by a picture of her, I really ended up liking Fairyland's Minifee Ruth. In 2013 I graduated college and had a choice - there was a doll I'd just fallen in love with that was a limited fullset and there was Ruth, being offered in Tan by Fairyland. In the end I got my limited guy, who I adore. But I didn't have a job so I couldn't save for Ruth for a while. When I did get a job, I was leaving the country for it. And then Fairyland took down their oldest sculpts in the minifees for renewal. This was 2015 and I figured that was fine. They said they would be back in a few months. Even if it took a little longer, I wasn't going to be in a place to buy Ruth any time soon.

Its 2018, and while some of the minifee's that went on renewal are back - the most popular sculpts - Ruth is still missing. A lot of the things I want in dolls has changed I feel since then. I fell out of the hobby for a while because I wasn't comfortable dragging my dolls around my new home. I had no cloth to sew. Things like that. But I still see Ruth on the site, and like Mei, I still like the face, I love the smile. Ruth is so happy. And so dang unpopular to boot. I don't know if I'm ever going to find a Ruth I can put together from the MP - my Ruth was always going to be a girl! But hopefully someday I'll get the chance....or Fairyland will bring back the last of the missing minifees. Or at least properly break my heart already.

    12. My grail is a Delf Moon. Not buying him when he was available has become one of my biggest, and quite possibly, only regrets in the doll hobby. He was honestly the first doll that I really fell in love with, yet for some reason, I always chose a different doll over him. Ironically, both of the dolls I bought in his place have either been sold or are on their way out the door.
Moon was a common, non-limited release, but since he's been discontinued, he is hard to come by--even more so since I am looking for an un-modded version.

DiM Flowne is another regret, but the Delf Moon is the biggest.

    13. Probably not super rare but my Grails are lillycat ninon on cartoon body and a blue enyo one day I hope to own these, fingers crossed

    14. My grail is a LM Sophia, because I have been looking at her for 2 years straight and still haven't gotten to getting her.

    15. Hey everybody <3

When I got interested in the hobby I stumbled across a lot of different terms that somewhat confused me first.

One of those being the term ‘grail doll’.

So, I did my research on what was meant with a doll being a grail, and found out that this term is being used very differently.

At first, I personally used this term for every doll I really liked super much, but with years passing by, my heart taught me what a real grail meant to me (and also what it did to me).

My ultimate grail doll is the DollZone Hong. My heart bled whenever I thought of him and knowing he was discontinued made me endlessly sad, because I knew I would need luck to find him on the 2nd hand market.
I needed him in my life, and after nearly a decade (that’s not a lie) of bad luck and searching, I finally found him last weekend. The feeling is something more special than just buying a doll you like really much. It’s more like a heavy weight on your shoulders coming off and you are free to breath and smile again.
At least, that’s how I feel. I will be a wreck until he arrives. And I don’t know if I will be strong enough to unpack him the second he comes home.

He was the first doll I fell in love with. And I know there won’t be any other doll in my life who will be called a grail doll by me anymore.

      So, here the question:
How do you define a ‘grail doll’?
What does it feel like for you to get your grail?
Did you ever get your grail doll?

I’m very interested in what you think! <3

    16. To me, a grail is any doll that it will take a lot of time, effort and patience to buy. Sometimes this is because it’s a rare sculpt, but in my mind it can also be an unlimited doll that’s more expensive than normal for a person. I imagine this latter definition probably applies more to younger hobbiests or those on limited income - I was both when I found my grail, the Islanddoll Veranoen fullset. Getting him finally was extremely exciting! There were a few hiccups (notably ID sending me the wrong coa) but resolving some of them actually made the doll better for me! He’s still technically unfinished as I’m waiting for my faceup artist to get around to him and in theory I need to buy him a few more items (is he going to keep the acrylics or end up with urathanes? Decisions decisions...) But man, every time I look at him I’m so happy he’s here with me! :love

    17. To me, it's a doll that you desire but is difficult to gain for various reasons.
My grail doll is Dream of Doll E-an or Tender E-an; it's a grail because the company has vanished and no one wants to sell their doll. I'll be lucky if I can find a legit one in good condition with her outfit.

    18. A grail is not always discontinued to me, but one I had to struggle to get, and didn’t think i would get. My newest doll (Harry) was three and a half years of waiting. I wanted a sculpt that wasn’t available to buy, and I’d have to commission him. Having commissioned one before I knew this was expensive and, having recently bought a house, I couldn’t see it happening. Then my favourite sculptor announced he wouldn’t do anymore BJDs. I got some money and contacted him, and he agreed to do this for me as we’d had a good working relationship before. Then I waited because there were lots of things that kept getting in the way (like life). The sculpting was inevitably a long process (worth it for a good result) then I had to save for the moulding and casting fee, wait ages in the casting queue, wait for shipping....

Finally, last week, I received the heads that I’d originally decided I wanted when I started the hobby... at the start of 2015. I’ve never been so excited to receive a doll! XD

[so tempted to stick a photo in... bad case of dolly favouritism!)
