What kind of bjd hair do you prefer? (deliberately vague)

Jan 16, 2015

    1. Well I only own one wig for my girl ( a monique wig) but I've styled several types of synthetic wigs for my friends and I have to say I prefer the Monique wigs! I like the thinner doll-grade kanekalon they they're made with and the rooted parting paired with the hair under the cap make the wig ideal for me. They offer durability and easy styling while still making the wig hair look in-scale. Also my experience is extensive when it comes to synthetic hair and I like it.

I like the idea of natural fibers, I've worked with mohair before and the texture was lovely and I love the appearance of alpaca but I haven't found a wig I like so far, as I prefer a rooted parting to a folded or criss-crossed parting and I've never seen a natural fiber wig with a part like that.

    2. I like faux fur wigs and synthetic wigs just depending on the doll. I have found them both to be easy to work with, so they are my go-to. I've only ever bought wigs from companies so far. I would like to buy a mohair wig in the future, but none of my dolls need one so I've held off. I like anything from medium to long hair on my dolls typically, even for my boys. My BJDs don't share wigs, though I have changed wigs from one doll to another if it suits their character better.

    3. I like Store bought synthetic but mohair and fur are nice too. I guess it mostly depends on quality for me, so i like to buy ones from official stores. The only problem for me is the shipping price!! I recently bought one from Leekeworld and total came out to be $49 total. It's really not a bad price but the shipping is almost as expensive as the wig!

    4. I like Monique gold synthetics. Though I generally prefer natural materials. I have an Oobie doll Tibetan mohair... which is beyond gorgeous and soft. I like bunny fur and I make those for all my boys, easy to achieve short boy cuts, super soft. I have not yet tried Angora or Alpaca but plan to sometime soon. I do not care for fake fur wigs. I think I will always prefer long wigs over shorter styles... but you just have to go with what works for the doll/character.

    5. I prefer storebought wefted synthetic high quality wigs, and definitely stitched and not glued, I have never had glued wigs but it makes me nervous just thinking about it.

No painted hair definitly a wig, I just don't like the look of the painted on hair, soft cap wigs, with a plastic wig cap underneath so it'll stay on.

I really prefer long wigs, but have a few medium/short, but most all of my wigs are long, and if not they have like pigtails attachments and stuff, I also really like curly wigs or wigs with a curl at the end, also layered wigs are fun. I have a couple like crimped wigs and like those occasionally. All of my bjds kinda share wigs although some have their own special wigs and style no one else wears I have like over 50+ wigs and only like 14 dolls or so.

As far as brand goes, I started out buying cheap ebay wigs, then did licht wigs which were kinda of all over the place as far as quality, then did some taobao wigs again all over the place in quality, and I bought my first leekeworld wig and I definitely prefer them I especially like the quality and their, unique, art and premium wigs.

Sorry if this is really long winded I hope it helps some other people is far as quality goes, but mostly helps people get to know me better. If you have any questions about the companies I mentioned feel free to message me I am friendly.

    6. I prefer stitched synthetic mohair wigs, with elastic cap, long hair, such like Monique wigs, the fiber used is so in scale with the dolls, very soft, easy to put on and off the doll head & easy to wash and style, it looks natural and realistic, and its a perfect choice for someone like me who refuse to use any kind of hair or fur that came out from human or animals

    7. I've tried all sorts of wigs for my crew (synthetic, faux "fur", mohair, alpaca, Tibetian mohair, etc.), and find that currently I prefer natural materials, such as hard cap alpaca and mohair (each hair glued into place), as well as some lovely custom faux "furs" I commissioned. I've recently started making my own wigs from suri alpaca, and really love the results - very soft and natural, and not too poofy. It's somewhat labor intensive, but fun. As to length / style - that depends on the character (I have both).

    8. Material preferences are faux fur or synthetic hair. I've had some Tibetan mohair wigs and whilst I like the look of them on other people's dolls I could never get them to look right for me. Plus mine ended up looking very old and slightly moth eaten after a while. And I definitely prefer wigs that someone else has made! All my synthetic hair ones are stitched on an elasticated cap - I think they're all wefts. Length really depends on the character, but not too long - anything longer than hip length tends to get cut. What is important is fullness - I don't want wigs that look like they have enough hair to easily make two more wigs out of - this is especially a problem with the tinies.

    9. I like mohair wigs for my Real Pukis best,I only concentrate on the Real Pukis now,but have also a Kaye Wiggs Rallie Faun comming in and have also a Gigi from Linda Macario.Gigi prefers also Mohair- but for Rallie I have also ordered a beautiful Monique Wig :)

    10. I'm not super picky, but for my own dolls synthetic and natural fibres are my preference - handmade or manufactured, doesn't matter as long as the quality is good. I think I like softcap wigs better, but that's more because my hard cap wigs have a tendency to just randomly fall off. :/

I like fur wigs on some other dolls, just not mine. The only kind I refuse to buy/use are pelt wigs... just because the idea freaks me out a little.

I have synthetic fibre, store-bought mohair and home-made alpaca wigs on my girls right now. I love the synthetic fibres because they hold curls and waves forever, but they're much stiffer than the others. The mohair one is lovely, and I'll probably buy more in the future. I love the scale of mohair and alpaca fibres, my only real problem with them is that when the hairs fall out they stick to EVERYTHING. Kind of like having another cat. DX

    11. I'd have to go for handmade wigs, I'm happy with synthetic fiber and faux fur but I would always go for alpaca or mohair.
With mohair, I would go for it pre-attached to the hide, it doesn't shed as much.
I like both long, medium and short hair.
My bjd is wearing a blue tibetan mohair wig, and its a medium length! :)

    12. I prefer natural fiber wigs or human hair wigs. As I want my dolls as realistic as possible. As for hand made or store bought, I own both.

    13. I prefer handmade, high quality wefted and glued natural fiber wigs. My first mohair wig was one I bought on etsy that turned out to be one of the skin backed types. It turns out that I really dislike them! Right now I mainly have long hair with pretty ringlets since I was able to buy some nice mohair at the NY State Fleece and Fiber show.

I like the LeekeWorld long straight wigs that I bought over the summer, but I plan to search for straighter natural fiber to replace them with. I find that I really like the feel and luster of mohair. I'm starting to venture out into more creative styles for my wigs. Right now I'm working on shaved heads with spikes and steampunk braids, and some dreadlock wigs with beads. Plus I also like feather wigs!

    14. Almost always angora, mohair with and without skin cap, and tussah silk. I have quite a few synthetics too but much prefer natural fibers because they are so much prettier.

    15. I somehow lost track of this thread! Thank you so much for your responses! Before entering into this hobby I was completely unaware of natural wigs, so the variety preferred by the commentaries above is really great to read about. I was also unaware of feather wins until sometime last week--they are completely different, but super cool.

I guess this should encourage me to escape my commercial synthetic fiber/ synthetic mohair bubble. I keep wanting to make a rooted wig, but I'm a little intimidated by how time consuming it appears.

    16. I'm still waiting for my first bjd to get here, but I am thankful for all these opinions! I'm probably going to make a yarn wig so my girl has something to wear when she gets here, but longer term I don't know! I'm glad to hear some people do like Monique and synthetic mohair ones (coz that's what's been catching my eye in the online stores in my country) but those alpaca ones look absolutely beautiful....

    17. I'm not that picky. As long as I think the price is ok for the quality, then I'll buy it.
I'd even buy a low quality wig if it's really cheap.

    18. I prefer whatever one suits my dolls.

I don't really have a preference. I have all of the versions you asked about and like them all for the result they give on the doll.

For example, I like the bushyness and styleability of the on-the-skin type for my curly or frizzy-haired dolls, I like the silkiness of the synthetic-mohair (and ease of fit with the elasticated caps), other synthetic fibre wigs have nice thickness to them and hard-cap (made to fit specific heads) work well for very short styles.

I think my least favourite are fake-fur wigs, 90% of them never look like anything but fake fur, to me, so they make dolls look like they're wearing a wig instead of having actual hair. Having said that, I do have a couple of fake fur wigs, since little beats them for short spiky styles.

    19. I get the storenbought wefted synthetic wigs. I like the longer ones too for most of my crew. One has a fur wig but it doesn't look very good on him. His new one is hopefully coming in soon.

    20. I prefer wigs with a natural-looking hairline or part, regardless of type. This limits me more in style than in material. Most of my dolls have wigs with bangs to hide what would otherwise be an unrealistic hairline at the forehead. Those that don't are generally side-parted. Most of my wigs are synthetic, although I do have a few tibetan mohair skin wigs. The only type I really don't like are faux fur for human dolls, although I've got a couple of Hujoo Freyas with them. It think they're more suited to the anthromorphs.

Even with the lack of restrictions on type, I'm still incredibly fussy when it comes to wigs. I've got a drawer full of wigs that I thought would look good on one of my dolls, but weren't "the one". I'm also guilty of falling in love with a wig and then finding a doll (secondhand to save money) to go with the wig.
