What kind of bjd hair do you prefer? (deliberately vague)

Jan 16, 2015

    1. I prefer natural fiber (alpaca mainly) wigs because of their softness. I like longer hair or even just shoulder-length (even on guys it seems lol) with bangs. Since I'm practicing making my own wigs, I do like the wefting method, and I'm also leaning towards handmade wigs more often. Mainly, I just want the hair to look natural, feel nice, and lay well around/on the sculpt, no matter the hairstyle. With some of the synthetic wigs I've had, they weren't as realistic or soft as alpaca, and that's where they fell short for me.

    2. I have mostly mohair but I don't entirely like them. My favorite would have to be the one in my avatar, it's a pretty nice synthetic wig. Though I don't actually have many wigs so I can't really pass much judgment on what I like best. I did just buy a silk wig but haven't had a chance to mess with it.

    3. store-bought wigs v. handmade wigs
Store-bought for me. I don't have quite the patience to make one at home.

synthetic wigs v. natural fiber wigs
Natural fibers. I have both natural and synthetic in my inventory, but I definitely prefer natural.

stitched wigs v. glued wigs (fiber fastened with glue) v. hide wigs (with hair that comes pre-attached to the skin cap--as in tibetan mohair) v. fabric (fur) wigs v. yarn wigs v. sculpted hair (separate or molded to head)
I'm okay with all of those except sculpted hair. Sculpted hair is too Ken-doll for my taste. The only exception I'll allow in this category is a molded headcap, like the Peakswood Monthly Fairies have.

wefts (relatively big chunks of hair attached together, usually sewn in a strip) v. lace wigs (what looks like individual hairs attached to the cap)
Wefts. They tend to look thicker.

      painted hair v. wigs
      Winged all the way.

soft cap v. hard cap wigs
      Soft

long hair v. medium length hair (interpret this how you will) v. short hair v. no hair
Medium hair. That way I can muss it or smooth it without a lot of effort.

    4. store-bought wigs v. handmade wigs
      Store-bought
I love to over-personalize everything (slight perfectionist) however wig making can be tiring.

synthetic wigs v. natural fiber wigs
      Synthetic
I'm not a huge fan of natural fiber for personal moral obligations.

stitched wigs v. glued wigs (fiber fastened with glue) v. hide wigs (with hair that comes pre-attached to the skin cap--as in tibetan mohair) v. fabric (fur) wigs v. yarn wigs v. sculpted hair (separate or molded to head)
I love synthetic fabric wigs for most dolls however stitched wigs are fine too.
I think you can do a lot wig sculpted hair, like a Medusa doll, or a monster! (which I've seen done very well)

wefts (relatively big chunks of hair attached together, usually sewn in a strip) v. lace wigs (what looks like individual hairs attached to the cap)
Depends on the character however I prefer wefts to style for bjds.

      painted hair v. wigs
I love to see creativity in doll owners, but I've never seen painted hair before (on a bjd)? So if it was done I'd love to know.

soft cap v. hard cap wigs
For bjds and not wearable wigs soft caps make it so much easier to keep on the doll for me.

long hair v. medium length hair (interpret this how you will) v. short hair v. no hair
short wigs! (to the chin at most)
I would say it depends on the doll and the character, however its' so much easier to style and mold short fabric (fur) wigs.

    5. I prefer synthetic... I've got five synthetic fiber wigs, one faux fur, and I believe I've got one that's real wool-- I mean, I don't dislike the feel of natural fibers at all, but I just feel like the synthetics will attract somewhat less attention from the cats (and I definitely don't like wigs where it's attached to hide). I have yet to tackle making one myself, though, either by sewing wefts to a fabric cap or w/ faux fur.

      As for both length and sharing, the current breakdown;
-Billy has his own wig, which is short in a sort of unisex mop-top way. (he has tried on one of my MSD wigs but it's just too loose on him, so he doesn't share... and half the time he just goes bald under his dino hood anyway)
-Pete's got one wig that's about shoulder-length, and sticks to that one. It's the tightest of my MSD wigs and fits him better than Vince/Moz' floating head, and I picked it specifically for him, so he doesn't really share.
-Vince has one shoulder-length and one short curly wig, both of which are very much his (both brown).
-Vince also has a short blue fur wig that he can wear just for fun, but will share with Moz-the-head (or which Moz could wear while hijacking Vince's body)
-I've got one black-and-pink short fiber wig (sort of floppy bangs look) which I've put on Moz and which Vince could wear, but it isn't really anybody's.
-Lastly, I've got one wig that's long and styled into two braided buns with little wispy loose bits, which is sort of in anticipation of my first female doll... which is not to say I wouldn't put it on Vince sometime anyway, since he's borrowed wigs from my sister's girl too.

So... I'm flexible about wig sharing in general, especially with Vince whose style is really flexible, but Pete's look is so fixed for me that he doesn't really change it up much.

    6. store-bought wigs v. handmade wigs?
      I like both

synthetic wigs v. natural fiber wigs
I personally prefer artificial fibres, not real fur as I'm concerned about animal welfare and would need to know that the real fur was obtained in an humane (as possible) way. I'd need to know the origins of where the fibres were obtained from. Some Alpaca's have been inflicted with much cruelty in order to obtain their fur which in recent times has been made much more public.

stitched wigs v. glued wigs (fiber fastened with glue) v. hide wigs (with hair that comes pre-attached to the skin cap--as in tibetan mohair) v. fabric (fur) wigs v. yarn wigs v. sculpted hair (separate or molded to head)
      I like stitched wigs better.

wefts (relatively big chunks of hair attached together, usually sewn in a strip) v. lace wigs (what looks like individual hairs attached to the cap)
      Either

      painted hair v. wigs
Dyed fibres, I don't like it when pastels have been used as they rub off too easily which can stain your dolls..argh!!!!

soft cap v. hard cap wigs
      Soft cap

long hair v. medium length hair (interpret this how you will) v. short hair v. no hair
Typically longer hair but I do like a variety of hair lengths.

What kind of bjd hair do you currently own? Do your bjds share their hair with another?
The majority of the wigs I own are of synthetic fibres but I also have two fake fur wigs that are funky.

    7. I prefer company made synthetic fiber wigs with a soft cap (flexible fabric). Wefts are just fine. (I prefer some kind of lace or skin part though.) I also like faux fur wigs and occasionally hide wigs. I would be severely bothered by painted hair on one of my own dolls. Sometimes I like no hair with just a beanie over the head. But generally it depends on the character. Long hair is often unruly so I prefer short and medium hair for girls and boys.
