What matters more, a doll's appearance or posing abililties?

Aug 5, 2009

    1. for me the body is all about posing because my dolls are mostly used as artists models so they are no good to me if i can't pose them. that said i won't by a head that i don't love the face sculpt so i tend to go for hybrids and get a face i love to go wtih a body that poses well even if they are from different companies. i always check reviews from other people on pros and cons of posing before i purchase. (partly because i can only afford a few, so i have to really love everything about them) i figure as long as the head is a fairly close match i can fix it up with a face up.

that said what is going to make the doll right for YOU? one that you will love and not regret getting?

    2. Buy the head of the doll you love and have it blushed to match the great posing body, then with a custom faceup, you will have the best of both worlds.

    3. I'd say the appearance. It's more worth it to get the doll you like than the doll you think poses better.

Besides, you can always swap the body out and put the head you like on a body that poses better. :)

    4. I don't have a doll yet, but on looking for a doll, I try to find a balance I guess. There are some basic things I can't give up and there are other things that I'm willing to give up. Things I definitely look for is the poseability, face structure and general body type. Because I'm basing the doll on a character I already have, I'm trying to match his qualities as best as I can and I want to use my doll to pose, more than to just dress up, though I want to do that too...so it depends on what you want from the doll I think?

    5. This is my problem right now too. I really like the DollNDoll Loren because her face is so beautiful, but the problem is she's only single-jointed. I was thinking of changing my choice, but I keep going back to her. Hehehe..the looks won. I figured her appearance should make up for the inevitable limited poses.

    6. Many, many times I have bought two dolls--one for the head/face and the other for a more poseable body.

      Yes, I'm a shameless Frankendoller.

If I had to, absolutely HAD to pick one over the other, though, I'm afraid appearance wins out. The most poseable doll in the galaxy won't satisfy me if it's fugly.

    7. I would choose appearance. Posing abilities don't matter to me. I take pretty simple pictures of my doll, anyway. And any other time, he just sits there. So they might as well be pretty!

    8. I ran into this problem. Found a good doll for an OC but...he wears little clothes and the body is icky. Found a better looking body, by the same company no less! But... less posing ability. I like to have a good balance between pose and looks. In this case I might go with the less posing ability just because he is more about the looks. So long as he can sit there and look sexy, its all good. XD

    9. I go for appearance. I just work with the limitations.

    10. When possible, then, please, the "golden middle" between these two )))))
When not... hmmm.. Depends on a character. If a want a BJD version of, for example, a Spiderman, the, sure, posing abilities, beacause appesiance is anyway covered with his costume and mask )))
And if i need "a beautiful prince on a white horse" than, no doubt, apperiance ))

    11. For me, it would be both whenever possible as well, but if that is not the case, then I'd lean heavily towards appearance, since I don't play with my dolls much and they are more display pieces than toys, posability is less important in that regard.

    12. Great posing is a must if you're going for natural poses for photography or whichever activity that requires it, for me it is kind of important since I do want to reach level where the poses seem realistic for photography purposes, still I don't lose sleep over it so appearance may come first. xD

    13. For me, both matter, really.
My first boy (AOD Chi) kind of spoiled me because he's very flexible and holds poses well, but I fell in love with ResinSoul Mei and Song, who admittedly, are not very good posers. But I just restrung and hot glue sueded them (they were very very very floppy) and now they pose just as good as my AOD! They can do some stuff he can't, too, and vice versa.
So for me, it's both, but I'm willing to make sacrifices and fix uppers a little bit to compensate.

    14. I would say the face, but the posability definitely takes a huge role in it too. I look at, first, which doll I like and then how capable it is in posability. Personally, I'd take the doll with the best posability, because it is important to me, but like sawnhilde said: a pretty face really makes the doll. You always could switch out the head or change its faceup to make it your own, or more attractive to you.

In the end, go with the doll that makes you the most happy. Does it matter to you how posable it is? Think about if you got one of the two better-posing dolls- would you feel regret or sadness that you did not go with the doll that originally took your breath away? Just think of it that way! :)

    15. Having a beautiful doll that can pose amazingly is of course the best. However, I think I would try to get a doll who could pose and customize it to look gorgeous. It's hard to play with a dolly that can't move!

    16. The face is most important. I see a lot of dolls that aren't very pretty, and even if their posing abilities are great, I don't want any of them. After all, when I see a doll, it's the face that captures me. If the posing is good, then that's just a plus.

    17. Personally, I would try to make the middle of it...
I want my doll to be pretty, but I also like to pose....
Well... You couls listen to your heart too.... But if you don't like the apperance, it's not much better isn't it?

    18. Well I am new to BJD's and I went for the appearance of the doll hands down...I found Resinsoul and all of their wonderful molds and resin colors and fell in love with them. I now have 3 Resinsouls, 1 Bobobie, 1 RS/BBB hybrid (I like RS body better than BBB) and I just ordered another RS a few days ago. And I find that they pose wonderfully! My hybrid was wired and sueded and wow I was suprised at the poses she just naturally fell into...I am definitely going to consider wiring my others.

I guess as everyone here has said it depends on what you are wanting to do with your doll. I have taken some pretty decent photos of my dolls, but I'm sure if I were more into that aspect I might consider another company. Although RS now has double jointed dolls so I get the best of both worlds.

    19. I think they both matter somewhat, but in the end I'd take posing ability over appearance. Of course, I'd just buy whatever head I liked best separately. ^^

    20. Appearance is defiantly the most important thing to me but then when I finally decided to take the plunge and get in to this hobby I had decided who and what all my dolls had to look like since they will be filling the roles of predesigned characters. My RS Bei for example. Currently can't seem to do more then stand on her own currently and that she does well, but anything more complicated then standing and looking cute it beyond her currently. And one day i might suede, wire, restring her so she can pose but for me it's not 100% necessary to have her win in a pose off because she is PERFECT for my character and that is what is important to me, having the characters i spent so many years building properly embodied in a doll.
