What matters more, a doll's appearance or posing abililties?

Aug 5, 2009

    1. Most of the time, it's appearance for me. But my latest doll is a hybrid and for once, I let posing ability into the equation because I wanted to use her in photostories. The experience has really awakened me to why people are particular about bodies that pose well. She is simply able to do things easily that my other dolls can't do at all.

    2. Posing abilities are nice, but I'm much bigger on appearance. I want to bring characters to life for my own satisfaction; I don't often do photoshoots or do outrageous things with them. As long as they can sit and stand and move with basic articulation, I'm absolutely fine!

    3. I would always go for appearance, posing is not so important for me, what draws me towards certain dolls is always their facial appearance, though better posing is a nice feature.

    4. I'd rather have a doll that looks life-like than a doll that can easily pose.

    5. for me it's a mix of both. The appearance is very important to me but taking pictures is a big part of the hobby for me as well so my doll needs to have at least decent posability for photo shoots.

    6. I'm new at this, but my initial intent was the posability but its has to have a cute face too. I think half the fun will be to have them be able to romp on furniture .... well maybe not romp, but look like they are romping.

    7. Appearance. Definitely.
But if a doll would pose really bad, I'd simply go for a hybrid.

    8. What really important for me is appearence. I don't mind about posing ability even though I often ask my doll to be artist's model.
However I never would buy doll whose posing ability is very law.

    9. Both, I don't want pretty doll that can only sit in shelf and standing likeless but I won't get a super poser doll that I don't feel spark with their apperance either so I say I want both of them.

    10. I'd say appearance is significantly more important to me. A doll body may pose great, but if it has hideous joints (especially elbow and knee joints!) I just couldn't work with it. Luckily for me, MNF bodies are beautiful and pose fantastically, so I haven't had to really angst over this tradeoff.

    11. Appearance,

even if single joints aren't very pose able I love the look of them

Double joints don't really look attractive to me ...

    12. A lot of it depends on the character the doll represents. If the character is supposed to be a ballerina, for instance, the body needs to be incredibly posable. A cop or an artist would need jointed hands. A brooding teenager needs a torso that can slouch.

      In general, I will value aesthetics a little bit more than poseability, because I've got no problem hybriding a doll, unless it's some crazy special color of resin. ^^;

    13. very interesting question here ~
for me, my first doll (or first anything rather) has got to be appearance
because i wouldn't know about the mechanics and stuff at first ~ it's the looks that attract me :3

okay, subsequent dolls however, would still be appearance ! xD
i would only get dolls i think are lovely, i consider the posing ability as an extra boon ~

    14. Everything on the doll is important to me. The sclupt (face and body) the face up, how it poses, the way I dress it. I have to have all of those just so, or I can't rest and the doll never really feels 'finished' to me, it still needs to be worked on.

    15. I'm tempted to say poseability, since I consider body language very important in a doll that can't change it's facial expression, but why buy such an expensive doll if you're not completely in love with the way it looks? The face is probably the most important thing, the body can always be changed.
I would probably get whatever doll I wanted the most, then if it arrives and there are problems, sort those out as they come.

    16. Definitely appearance. If I didn't like how a doll looked, even if it posed like a champ I'd still be unhappy. Posing issues can usually be fixed easily anyway using restringing and sueding.

    17. I would say, for myself, it's a nearly equal balance of aesthetics and posability, with appearance coming out ever so slightly on top.

On the one hand, I collect dolls primarily because they are pretty. I don't think I could ever purchase a doll I found unattractive simply because I could do all sorts of incredible poses with it, because the appearance of a doll, and how I percieve that appearance, is a large factor for me.

On the other hand, I love to take photos of my dolls, and posing them is part of that. I dislike unjointed torsos because I find it limits the range of natural poses I would like the doll to take, be it for photos or for display. If I thought a doll was absolutely gorgeous, but it was awful at posing to the point of being unable to stand for any length of time, I highly doubt I would purchase it.

I'm too tactile with my dolls to completely disregard the actual mechanics of the doll simply because I loved to look at it. If it was a limitation I could work around with something like sueding or wiring, it may be something I was more willing to work with. In the same strand, though, I could never purchase a doll I didn't find completely attractive to my tastes - I could never compromise the appearance like I could the relative posability.

    18. Appearance matters more to me. I see no point in owning a picture perfect posing doll if the face is too unattractive to take a picture of or show off. Posing isn't very important to me but if it were, I'd buy the doll with the nice face (or the head at least) and buy a nice color matched & porportional pose body elsewhere. I'd do quit a bit of research before I bought a body for a head though.

    19. To me, I'd lean more towards appearance. I wouldn't be satisfied with a not-so-great-looking doll, especially having to look at it day after day. Also, I'm one of the ones that would probably switch out the body, or do some modifications to it in order to make it more pose-able.

    20. I'd rather get a doll for their appearance - joints I can work around, but if they face isn't something I love, then it's not worth the money.
