What matters more, a doll's appearance or posing abililties?

Aug 5, 2009

    1. It's appearance for me, definitely. If I don't like a doll's look, the most amazing quadruple-jointed super body can't make up for it.
As long as everyone in my crew's able to sit and stand and at least(!) hold other basic poses without aid, everything's fine.

    2. Hmm...hard to decide! I'm more of the kind that go for appearance because I know I can rehome the head (hybrid) on another body which I deem more poseable. Best of both worlds!

    3. I had this problem with my very first doll. I found mold perfect for the character I had in mind, but I disliked how the head looked on the default body, the proportions looked off to me.
I was new at this hobby, I was scared to buy just the head and that I will be not able to find the right body for him. Still, I tried to search for other possible bodies. I found really nice looking and relatively cheap body and it was said that the resin match was pretty good. I knew that the poseability will be limited because he was not double jointed. But I decided to buy the body from another company for him, because I liked the proportions. And I was very happy about the result - I think the body is really great, the best I could get for that price, the posing is limited but not that bad.
Later, when I saw some owners pictures of him on his default body and noticed the difference in the poseability, my feelings were mixed. I still dislike that default body and I am sure I made good decission when I decided to not buy the default body, but I feel that my doll deserves the best body I can get - and I found a body on which I love both, the look and the poseability. It is probably one of the most expensive bodies around but I told myself whatever, I should get what I like the best and I am saving money to buy that expensive body because I want both, the best look and also the best poseability I can get :)

    4. I go by facial sculpt. I mostly sew so they don't have to pose real great. I find that I pick dolls by their faces also. I figure bodies can always be covered, sueded, or whatever else but the face is always going to draw in all my attention.

    5. I was a little worried about getting a single jointed doll for my first BJD, but I loved his face so I took the plunge. I've never seen a double jointed body in person, so I can't really compare the two, but both of my dolls have single jointed bodies and they pose absolutely fine.
I'd probably say go for the doll who's face you like the most. If they have clothes on then you can't really see any awkward spots in the single jointing, anyway. But I also like the idea of getting the head of the first doll, and then buying a different body for it. In the end, do what you think is best, but remember that there's nothing wrong with single jointed-bodies. Each company makes their bodies differently, and some single jointed ones pose very well. And faces are often the part of the doll that get the most attention.

    6. Appearance comes first for me! Posing is important but not so much so that I'd choose posing abilities over the looks of the doll.

    7. I go for appearance first, if I need better posing for it then I will mod or find a different body. My bobobie Pandora poses well enough for the time, I know later I will get a better body, but for now it works. I love her face and to me I would rather have the face then get a body to pose well enough.

    8. it really depends on the doll for me I favor VOLKS dolls for their appearances, their posing isn't the best but it's pretty good for my needs
I also favor Pukis for their crazy posing abilities, they're cute but not exactly my tastes in appearance

usually I choose appearance over posing abilities because so long as they can sit, stand and do simple poses without falling over ever 2 minutes their posing is good enough for me

    9. This question sounds a bit like ''Which is more important, the head or the body?"
As already stated, the body can be changed if it's a real problem.
When deciding, I think to myself, which one did I choose first? Did I pick the body, then a head? If not, then the sculpt is more important by far. :)

    10. It's the face that attracts me to a doll so that's what I value the most, if the body is OK but not great then I can live with that but if I loved a face sculpt but hated the body then I would just buy the head and get a different body that I did like and if I loved a body but didn't like the faces available from the company then I would do it the other way.

    11. I think it depends on what you use your doll for, do you enjoy keeping them to yourself or are you a photographer who wants a doll who can make lots of interesting poses? But as long as hybrids are possible you can have the best of both worlds, although it can be an expensive option.

    12. appearance all the way!!!!!! i don't mind spending a couple of hours trying to get them to pose the way i need it too. but if am not in love with the doll i know for a fact that i will regret spending my money on it....

    13. I think the face sculpt is important, yes you could always get another head for the body but alot of the times finding just the head can be difficult and there's always other ways of helping to pose a doll too. Just my opinion :)

    14. The facial sculpt is definitely most important to me, body's can be modified or switched to be better posers. So I think it's more important that you like the head sculpt as opposed to the bodies ability to pose.

    15. I would go with my favorite doll (even if she didn't pose that well), I mean, aesthetics are an important factor ^^ though technically, I guess you could get them both (?<-- not the most economical suggestion...) and switch the body you liked best and match it to the head. Selling the rest to someone who would like the other body/ head you don't feel particularly inclined towards is also a good way to rake back a few of the pretty dollars you spent

    16. I take whatever body comes with the doll I'm in love with. If it happens to be great a posing, so much the better. If it's not great at posing, I fake it in photos until it looks great at posing.

I also have a lot of LEs and odd skintones, things that aren't always easy to match with hybrid bodies, so hybrids aren't always an option. But I find that, even when I do have options, I tend to get attached to the body that the doll came with anyway.... it becomes part of his character/personality. If the body has quirks, I like the fact that the character has to live with it, just like we have to deal with the body quirks we're given.

For example, one of my SD13s (a teenaged gothboy) has always wanted to be dramatically heroin-chic super-thin, like a Ringdoll Teen.... but he's a big-boned kid who'll just never get that figure, even if he starves himself, so the chunky SD13 body is perfect for him to stay on. And one of the lanky SD17s has serious buttock-envy-- the SD17 does not come with much junk in the trunk-- but, y'know, sorry dude, that's just the genetic lottery-ticket you get!

    17. I first look for beauty in my dolls, then I look at their posing ability. If it's not very good then I'll usually watch reviews on them and make my decision.

    18. i always go for looks not pose-ability.

    19. to me, it is the appearance. i don't know, i just find that to be more appealing than posing abilities.

    20. I like more poseability, but if the body really bugs me appearance wise, all the poseability in the world won't save it.

...I up and bought Zaoll Luv without thinking about how she is single jointed. @_@

Basically, my bare minimum is "stands a table even if I knock it."
