What matters more, a doll's appearance or posing abililties?

Aug 5, 2009

    1. It is a mix of both, I have to love the face first and foremost, then I check out the body. I prefer two part torsos but can do without (the one thing I don't like about my Latigreen although she is solid and has a lovely body). I love the extra joint in the IH JID thigh, but the robo butt is kinda weird and I wish I didn't have it but... Overall I am happy with what I have on all my dolls with a combination of aesthetics and posability.

    2. Appearance, definitely. To me, if a doll poses well it's a nice bonus, but not a requirement. Even if the face was the same and I had a choice between two bodies - one attractive but a bad poser, and the other less attractive but an incredible poser, I'd pick the better looking one. As long as the doll can stand when supported by a stand, it's fine with me. I have had some that were hard to pose even with a stand supporting them, and that's annoying.

    3. Appearance... for sure... the pose is important too, but never could be important then the aesthetic and appearance. (Even if it's 'sad', to know that 'appearance' is everything in this world....)

    4. Well I must confess that when I look at dolls I mostly look at appearances. Heh heh. ;)

    5. Appearance.

If I don't like the face, they have to get out of my space.

Ugly places on the body caused by joints can be covered with clothing, but I prefer bodies that have single or hidden joints.

    6. Both appearance and poseability are important to me, so I own a lot of hybrids, do a lot of restringing and glue sueding, and tend to buy dolls that offer both poseability and beauty. The only dolls I own that are not, and cannot be made poseable, are the dolls I bought early in my collecting. Knowing what I know now, if I had it to do over, I would have made different choices on my early purchases. The early ones have a place in my heart, so they will stay...sitting in one position, for the most part...
That having been said, I sold a doll or two (the absolute worst posers, but beautiful), early in my collecting, that I wish I hadn't. I could have hybridded them on a poseable body quite easily, and enjoyed their beauty, while also being able to enjoy a functional body.
To me, ball jointed dolls are functional art. If they are not poseable, they are missing the "functional" part of the artistry they are intended to have. I want the beauty of the sculpt, but I want a poseable body to go with it!

    7. To be honest the look of a doll is the most important thing. I can easily be turned off by body or head molds. I can enjoy other people's dolls and their impressive joints! But for myself personally, like others have said, poor posing abilities can easily be fixed with wiring, kips discs, or suading.

    8. Both!! ^_^

Like seriously, why else would you pay such a fee for ... Owo.

    9. Both of these factors matter when making a decision to get a doll, but I think for me, posing ability is slightly more important. With a good faceup, almost any sculpt can look good, really. These dolls are so customizeable that even if I am not madly in love ith the face sculpt, I can still make a beautiful character with it. But you can't fake posing! I love dolls that can do really natural poses. They don't all have to be super flexible like Fairyland, but I at least need them to be able to stand without too much effort on my part. I can't stand dolls that can't stand! Even though there are methods to improve posing, like hot-glue sueding or wiring, I find that these methods are not enough for me. For example, recently I glue-sueded a Momocolor 29cm body. Even though the glue helped with the floppiness of the doll, and it can hold poses better, it doesn't fix the fact that the doll can't balance on its own. I've encountered a few dolls like this, and even if they are cute, it's such a turn-off for me if they can't balance, or their joints are flippy or floppy. So I never keep these dolls that have posing issues, no matter how cute the sculpt is.

I think I am in the minority with this kind of viewpoint, though.

    10. I'd go for the one you like best. If she doesn't pose well, you can always get a different body. I bought my doll for her sweet face and I love her even though it sometimes takes a little work to get her to pose.

    11. Go with the first one. You can fix posability issues with sueding and restringing, but you can't make Doll B or C strike you the way A does through any amount of modification.

    12. ermz.... I think to me the most important is the appearance of the doll....as long as they can sit properly..I'm good..=P

    13. doll's appearance is important for me, coz if the doll cant pose really well we can actually do something about its posing abilities. but we cant really do anything if the doll doesnt look good at all, unless ur good at doing modification XD

    14. I totally agree with shinigamishishi. Go for the doll you love the look of and the rest can be sorted out later :)

    15. I personally prefer appearance over posing ability because if I don't like the way a doll looks, I won't get it. That said, I still like having my doll having the ability to pose however I want it too, not that I would make them do intense poses...I'm not that creative haha. If they are able to pose nicely while still looking pretty, I'm all for it.

    16. I thought I just wanted dolls that looked good, but my Bobobie will NOT stand up or sit straight and it drives me CRAZY. I HATE IT. I now know that posing is a big deal for me. I have to have the doll able to stand on its own. If it doesnt, it seriously damages my love for it.

    17. At the moment, I prefer appearance. As long as they can sit up and stand up on their own, I'm pleased. But I also haven't done much photography with them. Once I get a good camera I'll probably prefer posing ability.
