What matters more, a doll's appearance or posing abililties?

Aug 5, 2009

    1. Poseability is never a worry for me. I have seven dolls none of which are amazing posers. My Wishels especially are not known for their posing. They are kicky, do not hold a pose very well, and cannot stand on their own but my god, I love them with all of my soul. I am a Wishel addict. When it comes to dolls I always look at faces first. Then the bodies. I look at how detailed and how aesthetically appealing they are. Posing never comes into play. If I fall in love with a mold and how lovely their body is, I'm not interested in something more poseable, that is just never an issue. I sometimes fall in love with a head but not the body only because the body doesn't thrill me aesthetically. For instance I feel that the Unidoll tiny bodies are often too thin and disproportionate to the heads. I would gladly put a Pibi head on another body I liked the look of much better. That's just me though:D

    2. Posing is very low on my list... as long as the legs can hold and don't crumple when standing. Arms do not have to hold positions either. Head I like a head that can move a little up and down as doll tend to sit lower than eye level. I don't like the look of some of the new joints out there! in my book most are ugly... I don't want to have to hide the knees. I prefer a classic look beauty is more important for the body to me and the face..

Only one exception and that is the fairyland dolls they have be able to hit both points posing and looking good!

    3. How the doll looks is more important to me. That's how I pick the dolls I want anyway. Not by how well they pose, but how they look. Which is probably why I fall in love with so many of them. I guess if I get a doll and it looks great and can't stand up on its own, because that's all I really want from a doll, then it's a slight problem.

    4. What the doll looks like is ultimately the biggest factor for me. Posing is important, but I have a serious dislike for double jointed arms or legs so sometimes I decide to hybridize. I love Dollstown's bodies: They are single jointed (except for their three part torso), but are very good posers. I could always fall back on that company.

    5. Go with the one you love the best! Honestly, I suppose it's probably shallow of me, but appearence over everything else is what I focus on when buying. It doesn't matter how well a doll can pose because I feel that I spend faaaaar more time just sitting with them, or leaving them hanging out on my bed- it's not all about the photography for me. And if you want them to pose for display, you can buy a stand. I'd say, get whichever looks most like a doll you can love for a very long time.

    6. I personally, would go for the first one, too, but if you find good posability out of the box important, then get the second. Also, nothing says you can't go back sometime down the road and buy the other two dolls you really like!

When I ordered my Bei from Bobobie, I asked to have in on the other body used for tiny girls instead of the slightly shorter and thinner one she comes with, despite the jointing system and posability being identical. I wouldn't love her as much as I do if I didn't get her on the body I prefered, even though she's always clothed.

    7. It depends on what I want to do with the doll.
For some characters I find it important that they can pose as best as possible and I don't mind much how the body looks as long as it looks ok with the style clothes I want it to wear. For others the look of the body is more important than how well they pose.

    8. The appearance, I barely pose my dolls, they just have to have the basics when it comes to posing. Also I really dislike the look of double joints and all the new styles of jointing, I like simple ball joints.

    9. To me, appearance matters more. Can't I have both? ^_~

    10. Of course you can! Fairyland! :D

I'm finding poseability is at least as important as looks, still. My single-jointed ones all get wired (making their arms pose almost the same as a double-jointed arm), but I prefer my well-posing single jointed ones to the ones who don't pose as well, and my A-line Minifee kicks all their butts on both counts. The double-jointed Dollzone mini is an amazing poser also, but a small step down on appearance - it's a sacrifice I'm willing to make for height on some dolls though. My dolls stay clothed, so joint appearance can be worked around for the sake of poseability.

Honestly, if you're willing to work, most dolls can be made to pose well. My Fdoll body now stands like a rock thanks to some heavy-duty wire. Single jointed arms usually pose amazingly with a little wire in them. Sueding and wiring take mere minutes and no unstringing and improve poseability greatly. My Mythdoll mini body and Resinsoul tiny pose beautifully, as do all my Dollzones and my Dolkot. None of mine pose as well as my A-line Minifee of course, but most do pose better than my B-line Minifee - upper torso joints are a MUST for me, I've found.

I will not have a doll that won't stand. Most of mine will stand on one foot, even. I'm willing to work to make it stand, and it doesn't have to stand forever, but if it can't stand long enough for photos it's no better than a Barbie to me. That's one of the critical things for me about BJD's - poseability and ability to stand on their own.

    11. I think if you like that face, that's the most important part! It's what you'll be looking at the most. Posing ability does influence me when buying a doll, but it's ultimately it's their lovely face that draws me in. Some of my favorite dolls have single joints. You're right though, it's ultimately a personal choice ^^;

    12. The face and overall look would mean more for me, but if possible, I'd rather change the head into a more mobile body. Just too bad that I'm really picky about how the body looks too.. XD

    13. Appearance is primary for me, I don't feel the need to have dolls that will stand on one foot or hold positions comfortable only to contortionists. As the vast majority of my dolls are displayed sitting or kneeling, they don't need to do much more than that in a graceful manner. And to snuggle sweetly for the pairs.

It's a little comical but I have a pair of Luts dolls that are both kicky & a little floppy but those very traits really ended up suiting their characters as they both over-indulge in drink & smokable goodies. They end up in some very relaxed poses perfect for their slightly warped state of mind.

    14. Appearance for me, for sure! I mean, it's great when they can pose really well, but most of the time they're just sitting around (weither it be in their spot or out) anyway. I'd rather love seeing them than love the fact they can stand on one leg >.> If that make sense.

    15. I go more for the appearance, but posing ability does come into play. If I know the body is completely horrible it may make me think twice, or at least just get the head and another body.
However, the appearance is the biggest thing for me. I'm ok with fighting with the dolls for decent poses. XD Honestly, if the doll poses poorly, I stick to more portraits, simple poses, while better posers get more full body shots. I treat it like a sort of 'search for the right angle' issue; I make sure I focus on what works best for the specific doll, and posing is just another aspect of that.

    16. I think its a little of both.... But if I like the body of one, and the head of another, I'm not scared of making an hybrid =3

But if the one I like a lot is only available on a not so good at posing... I can live with it.
There is also the price to think of...

    17. Easy solution to posing problems: hybriding or modding.
Personally, i used not to care too much about it, but since Purple (Bluefairy... Nuff said) makes mesweat blood when i try and pose her, i think that the poseability is more important. Since i like the bodies better, and poseable ultra jointed bodies usually have this "complex" look, i like better posing dolls a lot more.

    18. I think there seems to not be a consensus on what good posing means - when I say a doll has to be a good poser, I don't mean it needs to be a contortionist or stand on one foot for ages. I mean it needs to be able to stand on it's own (two feet are fine) long enough for me to take a photo, sit upright without being propped or leaning back unnaturally, and look natural in most of it's poses. My little Resinsoul Ni fits all those criteria. So does my A-line Minifee, my Dollzones, my Puki, my Mythdoll girl body, my Dolkot... My B-line Minifee is really the only one that doesn't - because of the torso jointing it can't slouch or sit upright on it's own. So it will eventually be replaced by the normal A-line Minifee body, and I'm seriously reconsidering ever putting my Delf heads on Delf bodies.

    19. I'm having a hard time in deciding between this right now I admit. Facing the decision between getting a resinsoul 60cm body (good posing it seems but I cannot bear looking at the torso) or a bobobie one (posing not as good but I can stand looking at it). I'm attempting to compensate by trying to find out if dollzone or angel of dream have the potential for a match (as both have good posing and lovely bodies), but it is not as easy a decision as I first thought it would be.

    20. Though general appearence of the doll is a very important factor, I think posability is also really important. I had been borrowing my brother's doll, a BBB Weylin, to see if I wanted to buy it. Though I liked how the doll looked, I eventually got really frustruated with it because it posed so awkwardly. That and the number of poses I could do with him were really limited. I would rather have a doll that a more posable body- I felt like the BBB was really cumbersome at times because of his weird joints.

Of course, you can always try to combine a nice head with a posable body, or do things to improve posability like sueding :3
