What matters more, a doll's appearance or posing abililties?

Aug 5, 2009

    1. I prefer both, but as my dolls wear clothes most of the time, I am willing to sacrifice perfect looks for superior posing.

    2. Both. One is just not enough for me XD I have tried, but have had to sort to hybrids to get the best results with the molds I wanted. Because it has to be a specific mold and if the body isn't posable enough, it needs another one.

    3. Well, of course I would like both, but if that is not an option I would definitely choose sculpt.
There are so many ways to improve posing - wiring, sueding, restringing etc... but I could never like a doll which I don't find aesthetically pleasing!

    4. Both would of course be wonderful and everything but I haven't seen a combination in which I find both the aesthetic appeal of the sculpt of the body and the head pleasing and the possibility to be amazing.

I have always been one to choose the sculpt over posability. I can hot glue suede and put silicone parts in the legs and arms and that seems to be enough to please me.

    5. Sculpt first, then posing if I had to make a choice. However, I have found a happy medium for this by hybriding for certain dolls and characters. XD

    6. For me it's all about the face. If I like a doll's face, I can overlook a thousand problems with the body to have it (which is why I still have my AA Shi-Wu... man I hate the body, but I adore her face.)

I'm not much of a one for hybridising dolls, as I am no good at it, so a few of my dolls do suffer in the posing department because of their bodies. ;)

    7. I guess everyone wants both, but if I had to choose between appearance and posing, I'd go for looks. Like already mentioned, there are ways to improve posing and even if the doll still doesn't pose so well - what matters to me most is the face. If the doll poses perfectly, but I'm not keen on the face - well, that's just not good.
So for me beautiful doll > good posing abilities. But of course both would be nice.

    8. Appearance is most important, but if the doll is naturally super-floppy and unposeable then it's a deal breaker.

    9. for me its mostly both, because I love posing my dolls (well.. doll. I have another on the way lol) But I think I do lean more toward aesthetics, because I also want a Delf, which I know from experience wouldn't be able to pose as well as I'd like.

    10. Definately both for me - one doll that has frustrated me the most is Supia Rosy; I've had two and sold them both because of her lack of poseability....she is beautiful, no doubts about that, her body is beautifully sculpted, but if they worked on double jointing or something, I'd definately get her again! ;)

    11. The looks of a doll is what attracts me to them in the first place. I fell in love with Resinsoul's Mei because of her cute face and hands, and detailed body. When I ordered her I had already heard about Resinsoul's iffy posing abilities, but they didn't matter much because I was in love :) When I got my Fairyland puki pukisha the same thing applied, I was simply in love with that cute little thing, and the fact that fairyland dolls are excellent posers was a nice bonus.
Now I feel I must add that my Mei's posing wasn't as bad as I expected and I learned t work with her rather quickly. Then I restrung and hot glue sueded her and now she poses like a pro :)
For me it boils down to this: Pose-ability is a very nice and welcome bonus, when I've already fallen for a dolls looks and details (I really love me some details  )

    12. Appearance always comes first for me. I like the face and the body to look the way I want it to. I found when I started out in the hobby poseability was such a big thing to me, but now I'm happy most of the time as long as they can stand and hold their arms up, and I do tend to tinker with my dolls' bodies to get them to work the best they can, even if it's just sueding and restringing. I just don't put my dolls in crazy poses all that often.

    13. Appearance for me, by far. I like nice posing, but really it's pretty much wasted on me, as I'm not into the photos part of the hobby.

    14. The doll's face is more important then the posing ability, but if the doll isn't an above-average poser it is a deal breaker for me anyway. My dolls are displayed seated together and I find that having them able to sit in a variety of poses gives them more character. I love my Volks girl and wouldn't trade her for anything, but she can basically only sit two ways: on the ground with her legs straight out, or sitting up straight in a chair. And I like more variety than that, y'know?

I'm having this issue with Elfdoll June now. I adore her face, she is everything I wanted for my character . . . except she is seriously lacking in lower-body posability. Elfdoll resin is not easy to match for hybrids, either, so if I do get June I will have to compromise on either posability or resin match (which I am also picky about).

Sometimes, you just can't have it all. :sweat

    15. I had the same problem with my June. If you're all about posability, I think you should go for a Domuya Flexi body, which is what I recently switched mine to. Domuya NS matches Elfdoll NS pretty darn well and the Flexi bodies are incredible for posing. I have some pictures in my album on my profile if you want to take a look. :)

As far as the thread topic goes - Well, I want a nice balance. I have had gorgeous dolls that can't pose worth a darn, and I just couldn't get attached to them. Good posing is critically important to me, I'm hesitant to even consider a doll that isn't double-jointed nowadays.

    16. I have to have both! if it's pretty, but can't pose I'd go nuts trying anyway.

    17. Well appearance is most important to me, but possibility is also important, I love to take pictures of my dolls. However, if the body I *really* want doesn't have fantastic possibility, there are things I can do to improve that (sueding, wiring, some minor mods). I try to find a balance between the two, but I will settle a little on poseability since that is a bit easier to try and fix then aesthetics.

    18. This is tough. *A*;;;
....it depends on how awkward the posing is on the pretty one. If it looks pretty natural but just doesn't have a huge range of motion, that would be fine with me. But if he just never stays in a natural looking pose, that would bother me. I don't like those stiff dollish poses.
But I might actually choose the highly poseable one in the end anyway, because I think I would have the most fun playing with it, and forget about the looks when I'm posing him. :3 It would be nice not to have to struggle with the posing all the time.

(edit: this is assuming for the sake of argument that I prefer the look of less joints, which actually I don't.)

    19. both are important to me.
      i wouldn't want to own a doll if i didn't like how he/she looked.
but at the same time, my doll is also a mini-model for my fashion designs so poseability would be my priority. i wouldn't buy/keep a doll if it didn't pose well.

    20. I've not found a male body sculpt I'm in love with yet, so as long as the proportions aren't too freakish I'll go for posability every time.

I love the Dollshe DSAM bodies posability but the unrealisticly scupted musculature and stretched out legs bug me a bit. ...But not enought to put me off. Like other people have said, if they're going to wear clothes most of the time, I don't have to worry about the beauty of the body sculpt.
