What matters more, a doll's appearance or posing abililties?

Aug 5, 2009

    1. I'd considered both, though I'd put more weightage on looks, but ultimately, I'd choose the doll that I like the most. If it is the prettiest doll that I like most over the other 2 more pose-able one, den I'd get it. If it is not the prettiest (tho more poseable), but I feel I like it and will be able to bond with it the most, then why not?

    2. I'm a hound for a beautiful sculpt and good posing abilities. There was a time when I thought all I cared about was how human the dolls face looked....then I bought an Annette Hempstedt doll in 2004. Karile looked like a real life human child (she was over 3ft tall and had real human hair and anyone that came to our house and saw her sitting on the couch was totally floored because she really looked like a little girl....but her posability was barely there in comparison with ABJD's. I eventually sold her because of this...I cried like a baby too, lol, cause it felt like I was selling one of my children, but since then I've learned that posability is super important to me (I'm a doll photographer) and to not allow myself to be taken in simply by the beauty of a dolls face.

    3. I would probably get number one. Beauty is always most important in a doll to me. Having nice posing abilities is great but I rather having eye candy! It's your choice and I wish you good luck on chosing which one! If the doll is stunning enough, you won't even notice the fact that the posing ability isn't the best in the world!

    4. I guess a combination of both. Although for me appearance just edges in front.
I couldn't have the worlds best posing doll if I didn't like the way it looked.

    5. I totally agree wouldn't matter to me at all if the doll could dance on its own if I did like the way it looked.

    6. I think it's one, then the other.

For me, a nice face is always a must. I'm not a person to get into doing face-ups first time around - mainly because I've never done one, so a nice face, with a nicely done face-up is the first thing.

Posing is also good because my dad is a very good photographer (not professional, but I'm not going to go through my dad' photography history here) - he did my high school's Asian Club show 2 years in a row - and he's been teaching me everything he knows, and suggesting books and stuff to help, too. I even got my own 8 megapixel camera a few years ago, which was a big change from my dad's old 3 megapixel camera he let me use. So, I'm all about the photography aspect of these dolls, and posing is a must for that. And there are great pictures of people's dolls all over the place, and I want to eventually do pics as good as those.

So, as I said, it's one, then the other.

    7. The most I'd use good posability for is drawing reference, so I'd like to have one or two dolls with bodies that have nice posability and proportions I like, but still look good.
So basically, I want all my dolls to look the way I want, but wouldn't mind if some weren't the greatest with posing.
If I found a doll that had amazing posability, but I didn't love the molds and whatnot; I wouldn't buy them just because of their abilities.
If I was really set on getting the body for that reason, though, I'd try to get a body by itself, and then maybe hybrid it with a mold I like.
Either way it's a win-win situation, for me.
The floating head I have is a FairyLand head, so since I never had any particular feelings towards the Minifee molds but loved the A-line bodies, I now have a perfectly good excuse to get one! I do love the head a lot, though~

    8. absolutely the face i mean if the face is so beautiful it can actually take your heart and breath
as for the posing it is important of course but i will go with the face
      i love looks

    9. I think both are important, but what's great about this hobby is that both appearance and posability can be modified! Heads and bodies can be painted, sanded, sculpted, sueded - you name it! I think every doll can be both aesthetically pleasing as well as an excellent poser with the proper modifications. I love BJDs! :aheartbea

    10. For me, the appearance is what sells the doll and makes it desirable. Beauty is the killer app for me.

BUT! Posing and maintenance is what sells the next doll. Ease of play determines how often I play with and think of a doll, a reputation which will extend to the doll's maker.

Annoyance with the knees of the Iplehouse EIDs is a big part of why am holding off on buying another, no matter how much I love their faces and sculpts. At the same time, I "dread" and set aside $500 when it's time for another Dolpa.

    11. I am really picky and all about looks. If a doll can't pose well I can work around that but, I do not want like, an ugly or so-so doll just because it poses better. It's all about the dolls mold for me.

    12. posability is a must. Face is definitely important, but a doll that doesn't pose well? That destroys more than half the fun for me.

    13. I would prefer to have both, but appearance would definitely win out. Meaning that the doll should at least able to sit and stand properly, but for more intricate poses need for photostories and such, I've learned that you can wire them/sued their joints to get them to pose better.

    14. I would ultimately prefer both. And I guess both can be modified - sueding and restringing for poseability, face-ups and mods for beauty. But I guess I generally go for appearance, cause I'd be more confident restringing than modding. :XD:

    15. Appearance draws me in first, then posing can make it or break it. I don't require a lot from posing, so if they can't meet my simple demands I tend to have to let them move on. I've had a couple really lovely dolls who wouldn't even really sit on my shelf without a struggle. In the end the lack of posing killed the relationship for me.

    16. I'm a face girl honestly. Posing is important enough to turn me off a doll. However, if I really couldn't find a better doll, I'd pick the face.

    17. I guess looks for me. I don't require a lot of posing, and when I do it's simple. I really wouldn't like to have a "ugly" doll with great posing abilities, it wouldn't mean anything to me.

    18. I find the appearance to be more important to me than posing.
Although, posing is definitely good for pictures. So I guess it just depends on what you plan on doing with your doll or what you think may be something you want to do in the future.

    19. Appearance before posing ability hands down.

    20. Appearance by far, for me. I'm good at improvisation, so I could make the most out of limited posing ability.
