What's the Appeal of the Sleeping BJD?

Jul 15, 2010

    1. Hmmmmm......my sleeping face doll is going to be a calavera, a sugar skull from The Day of The Dead.

The sleeping face is PERFECT for the sugar skull because I can paint the eyelids completeley black! So it looks like the black socket of the skull, which is traditional for The Day of The Dead. ^_^

    2. I'm not the most creative person when it comes to posing so I can't offer a bunch of ideas for sleeping heads (or awake heads)... But I think in the hands of a creative person there are really a bunch of possible ideas to be done when it comes to poses. *A*

Not to mention with sleeping heads you can better show off intricate eyeshadow and other such things...

    3. You know, sleeping heads can also do what an awake doll would find impossible...(due to it being medically impossible!) .. they can SNEEZE :XD:

    4. The appeal of the closed-eye versions is one of trust (in the parent) and vulnerability. Without being able to see, she could be sleeping, thinking, critically listening to music, or thoroughly enjoying a good cup of tea. It's another side of someone to love and care for, I think.

    5. I hope to see multiple sneeze photoshoots after this! XD

I like the tea idea! I bought my MsDoll Drayton to be a character who is a sound engineer, so I thought he'd be perfect for someone who spends a lot of time listening. :)

    6. I want to buy a sleeping BJD ^_^ For character like this one:

    7. I agree! That's why I chose a sleeping head for a very shy/timid character I have in mind.

    8. I don't want one to sleep forever, but I'm very glad I got my last doll with a sleeping head. It's allowed me to take the time to find the perfect eyes for her, which is really important to me, while still enjoying her beautiful self while we wait.

    9. I think it's great when you have a doll that has both face-plates, but I think I would feel a bit limited by a doll that just had a sleeping face. They can photograph beautifully, but I think there are only so many photos you could take of them before you ran out of ideas (or perhaps I'm just not that creative!). I love the variety of expressions you get with an 'awake' face, especially as you can change the direction that the eyes look in and change the mood of the doll.

    10. I think they look really serene. But it's true, what other posters have said about having lots of expressions when you can change the eyes and the direction they look in, but I just like that the sleeping bjds look peaceful.

    11. I used to ask the same question myself but I admit that sleeping dolls are mysterious and show a lot of emotions, however, I would not like to own one as I had many sleeping floating heads (they came free with the standard doll) and I sold them all. I do love romantic heads though....I'd probably want a sleeping doll if I had a blind character because most animes I've seen have their blind characters with closed eyes all the time.

    12. I am actually interested in a sleeping head cause it looks like he is smirking. In addition, I think some people get sleeping heads to either save a bit of money with eyes or that anyone can look like angels when they sleep.

    13. I have seen some lovely dolls with closed and half closed eyes but I find, for my own personal collecting, that I like the dolls to have their eyes wide open. Even a mild squint, like many male dolls have, is a major turn off for me.

    14. Yeah, seems like most people like it for the gentle/mysterious/romantic feel. But I still like open eyes, they just look more soulful :)

    15. My little AS Yuma has his eyes almost closed~ from the right angle he looks sleepy or even sleeping entirelly, however if you lift his chin just a little higher he suddenly becomes all devious and mischievous (although it might be because of the faceup I gave him) in the right light his eyes look just as much full of life as any OE doll's~

    16. I'm not sure of this myself. I'd rather have their eyes showing.

    17. I actually quite like sleeping dolls! I don't own any (yet), but I think they're very serene and beautiful, and can look as full of life in photographs as sculpts with open eyes. I can't exactly describe what their appeal is to me, but I've always liked them.

    18. The prettiest sleepy BJD I've seen so far is definitely Dollzone Yue. Before reading this thread, I wouldn't have thought about the other possibilities this look could convey (mischievous / mysterious), but I still don't know that I would opt for this sort of doll myself.

    19. I think some of them have a lovely mysterious look to them.

    20. As much as I love eyes, I think their is potential for the sleeping heads. It's not like they always have to be doing something peaceful. They could be one of those characters that always keeps their eyes closed, like Brock from Pokemon. Not the most realistic of facial expressions, but I think it has some creative posibilities.
