What's the Appeal of the Sleeping BJD?

Jul 15, 2010

    1. I didn't really think they appealed to me until I found one that I loved, Dikadoll Dew. I've been holding off on buying her because I've had a bit of trepidation over the closed eyes myself, but hey – reading through this thread has been helpful. The list of poses was great! Will be nice to remember when I finally do get her, hehe o vo

    2. I think they are cute especially when some dolls that are sleeping looks like they only closed their eyes, thinking of something, maybe enjoying the sound/ music around him/her or even better, enjoying the company of a someone special. Moments.

    3. I absolutely love sleeping faces! There's something so peaceful and gentle about them! It's relaxing. Does that make sense?

    4. I think they give off a different sense of character compared to open-eyed heads. I just find them to have a very sweet and calm expression, so I guess they're quite appealing if I want that sort of look for a doll.

    5. I think that their look is often so much softer than dolls with open eyes. I agree that they are very versatile and I love their look. They always look lovely in pictures. However, I love doll eyes because I think that they are so gorgeous. I can definitely see the appeal of both though, and hope to own a sleeping doll of my own some day!

    6. Having owned a "dreaming" sculpt before it actually stuck and became a trend around the house. Over the years I've ended up with a multitude of dolls with almost-closed or otherwise squinty eyes... and now I have a sleeping head coming in together with my girl that decided will be a character on his own. Initially I thought of sending him off to mod slightly open eyes on him but afterwards decided that I'd like him with closed eyes after all. His character is a really soft and gentle being with the heart of an innocent so this look rather suits him.

    7. I adore sleeping heads and the types of expressions and possible looks that you can achieve with one. However, I'm not sure if I would want to have one on its own.
In a perfect world, I would have daydream versions, fully closed versions, and open eyed versions any doll that I wanted to buy. But alas, we don't live in a perfect world. LOL

    8. I love sleeping faceplates/heads if there is also the normal one~~ because I would like to see the "active" side of my doll and the cute quiet side when they sleep~~~ There are so many cute faceplates/heads out there that I wish they have both sleeping/normal faces~

    9. I must say - they're simply addictive ;) Once you get yourself one, you want more and it becomes natural that they multiply in your collection :D

To be honest, I plan to buy myself only sleepyheads from now on. I've already owned... 6 or more (don't remember) and I love them. Their 'special things' are:
      - They're easier to photograph. E.g. you can shot 'kissy' pics of couples, you don't have to turn the heads, slight up-chin shots are not as nightmarish etc etc. They usually lok good from all angles: en face, profile, and half-profile.
      - They're more versatile. A doll with open eyes has a fixed stare. A dreaming doll hasn't.
      - They don't only just sleep lol :D They may be simply bored, feeling superior (my WS Drayton has this expression lol xD), they may feel worried (like a toothache or something...) Nah, I'm joking now, but, really, their faces can express sooo much more. like @Quatorina mentioned - they may enjoy some music/sound etc. Have you tried some earphoens on them? I have tried earmuffs, and I'll just say: earmuffs are a must if you own a sleepy head :D
      - They're easier to paint. Like, when you put your own makeup you also put some eye shadows, an eeyliner and perhaps brush over the brows. Right? That's pretty much nearly all you need when painting a sleepyhead as well :D
      - While open-eye bjds with glass eyes and fixed stare look lifeless and still, dreaming dolls seem to be just about to open their eyes 24/7. So they look even more lifelike than the closed-eyed ones. Especially in person :D
      - Cpt Obvious, but anyway: you can photograph them sleep without any effort (like photoshopping the eyelids, covering their eyes with fringes etc). So they're *super*-versatile :D

so... these are the reasons why I love sleepyheads and tend to buy only dreaming bjds :))

    10. @CutieKitty you sure make a compelling case for sleepy dolls. I don't happen to have any with completely closed eyes, just "dreaming" mostly closed eyed, but I love "sleepy" sculpts!

Here's a question: Do any sleeping sculpt owners put eyes in their dolls heads? Just to know they have eyes and an eye color behind their lids? Like if they could open their eyes they could see? I always thought if I had a sleeping head, I would do that. >__>

    11. CutieKitty:
Lol, yes! The famously named "Slack Afternoon" (SA) Dollshe heads - I owned a SA Hound, and it always felt like he thought my ownership was beneath him!

    12. I want a sleeping head for one of my characters. She never has her eyes open, so a sleeping doll head would be perfect for her.

Otherwise, I'd probably have a sleeping head as an extra for taking photographs with a different expression, it's not something I'd want every day unless it specifically suit the character I buy it for.

    13. @idrisfynn haha xD yeah, I totally make it xD Uhm, about the eyes - sometimes you may have dolls with super-narrow spaces between the lids, then - esp if you don't glue the eyelashes in, it's rather good to put some eyes in. otherwise it looks quite... horrible :3 You know, blank, dark spaces. But with some sleepyheads, e.g. my Draytons, who weren't originally openeyed ones the spaces beneath the lids are very small and it'd e simply impossible to put any eyes in. So, eg. I have some cheap acrylics in my TingYun but non in my Draytons...

@hobbywhelmed omg... you just helped me realise why i'm sooo into Dollshe bermann :D yeah... that's what I like in dolls. I mean, the sweet and docile-faced dolls with big eyes are just not for me. I need them with some strong personalities etc;) Even if it feels at times that I'm merely their slave/photographer/stylist and they're some bunch of hollywood celebs... :3

    14. I absolutely love sleeping sculpts. They look so beautifully dreamy. They can also look sultry or sad or really any emotion depending on their faceup. I keep thinking that I'd love to own one, one day, though I know that in some ways theyre not as versatile as open eye sculpts

    15. I have one sleeping head girl (a lati yellow sp sleeping coco) and now that I think about her compared to the others, her personality actually seems more outgoing! But maybe that's because most of my dolls are more pouting or sulking, and she actually has a cute cheerful little smile! Even though her eyes are closed she often looks playful and happy.

    16. For me I usually isn't too interested in sleeping heads even if they are beautiful. However I would want one for one of my characters since there are parts of his story that I want to photograph where he needs to be asleep. So for me the interest in a sleeping head would be for the expression and to use that head on certain occasions.

    17. I spent years looking for a bride for my first doll. I finally found her. She is a very wide eyed and very assertive looking girl. I got her a sleeping head so that her husband could moon over her while she slept, he is a very gentle romantic person. Otherwise she always looks just a bit like she is glaring at him.

    18. sleeping eyes are v moddable! I prefer subtracting resin to adding Epoxy clay :\

    19. LOL I had no idea that was what SA stood for! I just got an SA Hound...he does look like pretty much everything is beneath him XD

I don't normally bother with the sleeping heads anymore as "extra" heads since I rarely switch heads, but I made it a point to order one with my LTF Pongpong. I want a "laughing so hard he's crying" look for him to go with his normal face.

ETA: as I just wrote I don't bother with extra heads....the SA hound is the extra to my normal hound. =_= this is why I should never say "I don't" in this hobby......

    20. I love sleeping dolls! I find them very relaxing to look at, and it's more like they are little people who might wake up at any moment! They remind me of faeries :)
I don't have any dolls with fully closed eyes, but my X has modded "dreaming eyes" from a sleeping face and I adore her! I couldn't have wished for a more perfect expression for my idea for her, she looks like such a sleepy sweetheart.
