What's your opinion of which child heights work alongside SD dolls?

Jul 1, 2021

    1. So it seems pretty straightforward to me that a lot of the time (not all!) YOSD = young child, MSD (if not a mature MSD) = tween-teen and SD goes from teen on the smaller end and big adult on the larger end.

In my group of dolls I have a family, they come from years of roleplay and from DnD Here's a breakdown:

Mother: 59/60cm girl on the older single-jointed Supia body. NS.
Father: 70cm male on the Ringdoll RGM-03 body. NS.
Son #1: 15cm tall and he just turned 4 years old. He's a Resinsoul Spring head on a Yu body. He's dark tan.

When the son is alone with his pretty petite SD mother he looks like he possibly could pass as 4, but next to any other character he looks more like a toddler than a 4-year old.

Another issue is that Son #2 is on the way as the mother is now pregnant.
I managed to find a cute tiny articulated vinyl baby that was a keychain on wish, and it's the perfect size for a BJD baby (newborn or a few months old depending who's holding him). For size reference, he's stands about three quarters of the way up the Spring/Yu's thigh. (sorry, can't find a tape measure or ruler at the moment for a precise measurement).

I feel like son #1 is just too small for his age. I want him to be bigger. There are two major issues; how tall should a four-year-old surrounded by SDs be, and finding him a body that comes in darker tans (he's a RS dark tan but the new baby has a different father and would be NS). Technically his dad is a tan Impldoll Tank but the tan is very orange - dark tan would have been ideal - and I don't want to have to full-body paint him (the Tank is a perma-floating-head).

I'd be willing to sacrifice lighter tan skintone for the right height/body, if there are sculpt or company suggestions but I have no idea so I thought I'd pose the question:

How tall (in cm preferably but inches is okay) is the 'right' height for kids of various ages when their parents are SD? I feel like this is quite subjective and I'm interested in any answers I might get. For example, how tall should an average 4-year-old be? 8-year-old? 10-year-old? At what point do you switch from YOSD to MSD?

PS: I hope this is in the right place. If not, could a kind mod please move it? Thank you!

    2. I feel like this is a good list that I tend to find myself sticking to:

Less than 20cm = Infant to 1.5 year old
      20-30cm = 2-6 years old
      30-45cm = 6-14 years old
      50+ = 15-? (based on styling)

I think it’s obviously okay to break these rules a little, but for a cohesive group and consistency sake, I think it’s best to stick to these sorts of boundaries. SDs have the most room for you to play around with in terms of styling for age/maturity, but the smaller you go, the more immature they’ll look next to your other characters anyways. Styling will be key regardless of the size you go for.

I’ve seen a lot of people using YoSDs (~4-6 years old it seems?) for relatives of ~65cm adults (mid-late twenties?) The size is really cute. I’ve mostly seen them used for toddlers next to SD parents, as well as elementary school kids next to MSD siblings (think a 8-10 and a 16 year old).

Personally, I have a 57cm and a 65-66cm who are the parents to a LittleFee (floating head) who I hope to put on a chubbier 28-30cm body, just so that she stands a little taller next to them. Her age in this form really hasn’t been decided, but it’s safe to say she’s probably 3-6 years old given that approximate height.

      Hope that’s helpful!

    3. Hey I can help cause I have a very similar age group to one of my doll families!
The dad is 71cm and the mom is 58cm. Triplets are all 27cm yosd. This is an old pic before faceups and matching wigs but still good for reference. I figure my triplets to be around 4-5.

I have another family group with a 62.5cm mom and dad, a 27cm yosd for the older kid (age 4), and their baby I had shelled as a 1/8 but I recently ordered an art doll in that same scale to have a more baby look to her.

    4. This is something I really struggle with as I have many SD-sized dolls with younger siblings and I try to balance their ages out in respect to their heights. There are really two DoA members that opened my eyes to a more realistic scale difference.

@MadamMauMau has a really interesting post about using real-life growth charts to determine a doll's height in relation to their parents here. In their doll world, a 70cm doll is the equivalent to 6ft, so an 11-year-old standing at 5'2" in real life would need to be 60cm as a doll. (The post explains much better than I can!)

Also, @MB Lilac has done a great visual representation with her MSD-sized Victorian family, where her Iple JIDs are the parents and KIDs and BIDs are the children, rounding it off with a tiny (Supia Baby Sup at 13cm) as the newborn.

I've been a bit more loose with my own earlier dolls, where I have an SD to represent an adult and an MSD as a ten-year-old. If I were to go with a more realistic height, the MSD would probably be closer to about five or six, which is just too young for the character. I've just left it as-is since those dolls are from a more stylized time in BJD history anyway. XD

My newer and more realistic dolls I do try to match a bit closer scale-wise. I have a Dollmore Dear-sized Shabee as the year-old infant brother of my Supia Juah (ballerina body). On a smaller scale, I use tinies as babies only for MSD-sized and under.

    5. I did all the math on this once between scale and children's average heights at varying ages, and came up with SD as adults, MSD is about 8 years old and YoSD is about 2 years old. That last bit kind of surprised me, but doubling a two year old's height will give you a rough estimate of what their adult height may be. Though with BJDs, since there are only a handful of standard height categories without many in between sizes, it's impossible to get dolls for the *exact* height for every age in perfect proportion. Nobody's going to be measuring your dolls and calling out discrepancies, so just go with what you think is cute!

    6. I think if you uppped the size of the four year old to around yo-SD height (25-30cm) you'd be fine there (15cm is a bit too small by comparison).

And don't forget there are in-between sized dolls between yo-SD size and MSD size (such as Dollmore Narsha, Unoa Chibi etc) that can be used as you progeress up the child's ages:

Also, some 1/6 or Yo-SD size dolls are bigger than others - whihc can help if you feel the child needs to be a bit bigger:
The doll almost cut out of the right of the picture is around 63cm (although he's in lowish heels, and on a thickis-based stand so looks a bit taller).
The group in the middle of the picture are, in order of height) 56cm (redhead boy in blue), 43cm (slim mini girl in green dress and the seated girl in orange), 37cm (boy in sailor hat), and 30cm (redhead girl in blue).

Also there are dols in between the MSD and SD size that can fill size/age gaps there too. DollsTown Elf works well as a gangly early-mid teen, for example (although, depending on faceiup and head sculpt can also work as a younger child - here's mine (pre-teen alongside a friend's (older teen):

And a bit of size comparison with an SD-sized doll:

Good luck with finding the right sizes, sculpts and colours to work for your family

    7. Thank you so much, that's all extremely helpful. I suppose my worry is ,mostly finding a company that makes a dark enough resin for him but this has given me a much better idea of how tall the kids should be. Does anyone have any suggestions in line with the post here on a resinsoul doll that would actually have dark tan as an option?

    8. I think Resinsoul is usually pretty happy to do a custom order for you if there's a different doll of theirs you'd like in dark tan!

    9. I know they'll do custom colours (they're awesome in that regard) but I'm wandering if anyone could suggest specific sculpts for Dali, the 4-year-old, preferably Resinsoul.

    10. I think the face sculpt and head size is also an important factor to consider when determining an age. I have a Luts senior65 boy and his younger sister is a Volks SDmidi at 40 cm. My 65 currently has a soft face so he looks anything from 14 to 21ish. The body is way to jacked to be a teen's though so he's got serious baby face syndrome at the moment. The volks girl looks 8 to 12ish.

The girl comes up to the 65's waist, which if he was a fully grown man at say, 5' 11" would still only put her at the size of a 4-6 year old in comparison. But her face definitely does not look that young! I think she looks good in scale next to him though because volks minis have large heads and thicker bodies. Its also very much a child's body. She's got very little waist definition and no chest.

I'm planning to get a TTya yosd doll to be the youngest sister. At a realistic scale she'd need to be under two years old. But the face sculpt passes for 5 to 8. Hopefully they all look nice together.

    11. This thread has been helpful for me. I already have a doll for a child character, and the comments above have helped me figure out what size her adult guardian should be. While there aren't any sculpts I like for the adult in a size I'd prefer, I figured out what would appear in scale without too much exaggeration. If she's the equivalent of a 150cm 11-12 year old, he's likely going to be 189cm in comparison.
