When did you give your doll a new faceup and why?

Dec 9, 2015

    1. I was just wondering when you all decided it was time to give your doll a new faceup. Was the faceup getting old? Did you want to add give your doll a more appropriate faceup for their character or style?

    2. For my first doll it was a mix of her character changing and wanting to get better at faceups. She went through probably four different personalities (and four different faceups) until I finally developed her character into what it is now. Since her I've gotten two others and their faceups probably won't change unless I want to do a better job.

    3. Usually a doll gets a new one when I look at it and go, "Oh wow. I can do so much better for you than that now, darling, come here." *grab, scrub*
Sometimes the tinies just get new faceups because their old ones wear off with handling and contact with cloth in their boxes and stuff. They do get played with a lot. I often redo blushing every couple years on any doll I own because it gets chipped or rubbed away with even average gentle handling.
Onnnnce ina very long while I have a doll's faceup get chipped and I have to re-do it. So far that's only happened once or twice.

    4. My very first doll got her first faceup made by a dear friend. Something that looked great to me. Until fancier dolls started making her look too simple a couple of years later...& then she'd talked me into getting her a fellow & he was heading out for a faceup...so she went along to get a fancier look in a similar style. But that one was a disaster. :{ So, a year later, I found another artist to redo her yet again. And I've been very happy with her look ever since.
Another doll I got second hand had a nice factory faceup, except the lips were too orange. A friend helped me reblush them. But still the eyeliner was too strong around her eyes. Finally , after a couple of years,I sent her off for a new faceup. When she returned, it took me a while to get used to the new style but when I look at old photos of her I'm really glad I had her repainted.
Because of these two experiences, I have a Volks Nono who still has her first really simple faceup & so far I haven't felted inspired to have her repainted. When I first met her on the sales table at a meetup, her face & wig & whole style were perfect for her. Until something happens to her faceup I don't plan to change her just because it is a scary shift to get used to a whole new look with a doll I've connected to in this way. Especially when it doesn't turn out as you'd hoped!
On the other hand, I love sending blank dolls off to artists with long explanations of how I imagine the character & why the makeup should or shouldn't be dramatic or historical, a certain color or in a particular style the artist does well. Only once or twice have I had to ask to have a face redone- mostly because of some blushing being too dark in the preview photos or the eyebrows needing a minor tweeking. And only once was the faceup a sad disaster but hey, its all a matter of scrubbing it off & trying to communicate better next time.
And the only other doll who's needed a faceup redone, it was because I didn't pay attention when putting goggles on her face & chipped the paint. Gah! Do be aware, it is way too easy to chip paint. Especially on eyebrows & lips, or rub it off on chins, noses or jawlines...says the sad voice of experience...Luckily in the worst case I was able to get a hold of the artist & have her redone. It didn't turn out exact, but at least similar to how I'd gotten used to her.

    5. With my first doll, his company faceup just wasn't working for me at all. I'd bought a doll to be one of my oldest OCs, and felt like I'd gotten a weird little alien; having decided that it was at least worth a shot to make him work out, I wiped his face, repainted it, and chopped his wig, with the result being much closer to what I wanted in my first doll. (He had that roughly chopped wig up until last month, too, and I've had him and that wig for nearly eight years.)

The other dolls I've ordered have all come to me blank, and over time I've slowly gotten better and better at doing their faceups; as a result, I'm now starting to go back and "refresh" some of the clunkier old ones. In the case of the first doll, he's since gotten a new body, so a full faceup refresh and body blush is in order for him; with the others, they're just starting to show their age and need a solid scrubbing to clean them up, which will be accompanied by a body blush and faceup.

I also have three who will probably get redone in the not-too-distant future for other reasons. In the case of one, his body blushing has started chipping overly fast, due to him being the only doll I blushed while strung, and a slight rush job on his faceup after it was botched near the end and had to be redone resulted in me doing his tattoos wrong. Another was just getting her faceup and blush finished when the sealant sputtered and left drip marks on her leg, and a few chunks of very black dust stuck to her face. And the third was originally meant to be a different character, and was blushed from WS to NS to suit that character (she was a raffle prize, so I had no choice of resin tone); since she's changed characters, I'd like to strip her blushing down and return her to her original WS coloring, with a faceup suiting her new character. But for now they all look fine, so they're a lot lower priority than those clunky old faceups.

    6. I do new faceups when the old ones are damaged or I no longer like them. Same with body blushing.

    7. I don't give my dolls new face-ups, I have people for that *snob*. But, usually, I only send my dolls out once and that's it. But currently, I'm 'reïnventing' the crew. This means getting a more appropriate look for what they are going to be. It wasn't like they needed a new face-up, because the original was getting old: All of them still look great, even after ten years.

    8. MY second doll was a B&G Ymir. Despite that the MSC on his face is chipping, etc, my sisters and office mates thinks he's soo cute. Personally, I've been wanting to send him to a face up artist (I ran out of funds after being sick XD) since the MSC chipping on the bottom of his nose seemed to be snot running XD

    9. I got my Delf Miyu with the default Luts face up from 2010 (the brown face up). I kept it for a while, but it was dirty and there was a chip right on her cheek. I wiped her and sent her for a face up. I have 2 dolls with the default Leeke face up, and I'm not in a hurry to change them. I have a floating Angel Elf Soo with the default face up, and eventually I will get her a new one, but after I get her a body I'm going to keep it for a while, since she was my grail and I want to enjoy her as I first saw her on the Luts site. My 2 other dolls came blank so they got face ups from talented artists. I have a second AES on the way and she got a new face up to spruce her up for selling by her previous owner. My Ari Wink that's on layaway is blank, so she'll get an artist face up at some point. I'm not going to trust a doll from 2003 in mint condition to just anyone, though!

    10. Most dolls end up with a new faceup right when I get them, because I prefer doing my own, unless I love the one it has.

My first doll came with a faceup by arrowchild that I absolutely loved. Recently, it chipped, and today I gave her a new faceup. I was worried I wouldn't love her as much, but I'm happy to say that I love her even more now. <3

    11. for many reasons
      * when I don't like the company make up
      * when there is a make up problem
      * when I don't bond anymore with the doll
      * when I tried to do it myself and that is a disater lol

    12. I usually get new faceups for my dolls when the old ones are about worn out or damaged in some way. Or, in the case of one or two dolls, their faceups weren't quite what I wanted so I had them redone to be more suitable.

Some of them, I love their faceups so much that when I'm forced to replace them, I ask the artist to match the old one as closely as possible. Same color scheme and all that. I feel like they just wouldn't be themselves without their faceup.

    13. I usually do my own faceups, so when I feel like my skill level has improved a lot, I want to redo old ones.

If I buy a secondhand doll who already has a faceup, I'll usually wipe it immediately and redo it to fit my character.

On the rare occasion that I commission a faceup, I'll generally keep it until it becomes damaged, or it no longer fits the doll's character.

    14. I've always done my own, and I redo them if they get chipped or stained or sometimes just when I feel like it.

    15. My doll's face up was damaged. I have to send her back out to get it fixed. I would love to do my own but I do not have the talent for it.

    16. I have only had partial ones done so far and it was because the factory ones were just blah. I wanted more pizzazz and the redos brought the ladies involved to life for me. I am very glad I had them redone.

    17. I can only think of 2 I've redone completely. One was damaged (he got a chip right on the tip of his nose) and the other one just had a shoddy faceup (it was done by me so I've only myself to blame). I'll enhance old ones occasionally, if I think they need them. I haven't needed to redo any factory faceups- only my own work.

    18. I do it for a lot of reasons:
-The doll arrives with a default that doesn't suit them.
-The doll's faceup is old and worn in places or damaged.
      -The doll's character is changing.
-My skills have improved and I know I can do better than the faceup the doll currently has.

    19. Never... in over 11 years of owning bjds (I've got all my dolls that I bought way back when, too-- All with original faceups). I DO want to re-do one of the first faceups I ever did, ten years ago! But I haven't got around to doing that yet.

    20. I changed my RS Song's faceup because, as much as I liked it, it didn't quite match my other dolls at the time, since my faceups are a bit bolder than RS/BBB's company faceup. I was also sorta-kinda falling out of love with that doll so as kind of a measure to see why, I decided to do a little with him and changing the faceup was just the trick! He looks so much better now, even if my faceups are FAR from professional, all because he looks more like the character and my other dolls.

I changed my other doll's faceup the same day COMPLETELY on a whim. It didn't turn out as nice, but I still like it better. I changed his eyes from brown to all black and the company faceup looked really weird with the eyes, so I changed the faceup lol.

Beyond that, none of my other kids have needed new faceups yet
