When do you have "too many" dolls?

Dec 26, 2009

    1. To be honest, I'd rather memorise the birthdays of my friends and colleagues than the arrival dates of my dolls. So what if I don't know whether I got that one head in 2007 or 2008 or how much I paid for a body, head or doll on the secondary market? I have forgotten that I owned certain dolls that I love dearly and that does not make me feel bad. Dolls are nice, but they don't need to take up all my brain space.

I'll stick to what I tell myself: "You have too many dolls, if the amount makes you unhappy."

    2. I have 4 dolls and two floating heads, but even when I only had 1 doll I constantly forgot when he arrived. I am really bad with dates, they just don't matter to me.

So, I agree with the "you have too many dolls, if the amount makes you unhappy." Some will have too many dolls after 3, some have 50 and are still content. It's different for everyone.

    3. Personally for me I believe that two-three is the max. The more dolls you own the greater the chance that the older dolls will get forgotten. I just got my first doll (Dollfie Dream Dynamite) on Friday and I'm lovin it, now my main concern is find clothes that fit because her Christmas outfit is getting old already. Plus I use them for more of a creative endeavour (photography, etc).

    4. I think that's pretty awesome :D

Honestly, reading through this was starting to make me feel a little guilty for having as many dolls as I do, and being pretty much dead set on buying all 28 that are on my wish list, but then I thought, who is anyone else to tell me when I have too many dolls? It's completely a personal choice, and when I've collected enough of them to not want any more, then I'll just have enough. Not "too many" or anything else.

I have 8 now, and I live in two bedrooms basically (one at home and one at school) but when I get my own place, there will be a large bookshelf, (yes a whole bookshelf full of dolls!) and that'll make me really happy, and that's all that matters. So regardless of your number, don't let anyone tell you how many dolls is right- whether you can remember their names or not. I confuse my friends' names sometimes, no one is perfect. It's your money and your time and your hobby- do with it what you will. :)

    5. I own a lot of dolls and today I did some wig swapping with my second doll that I got several years ago. I think dolls "risk" being forgotten if you don't really like them (anymore) or if you are at the moment just too busy with other things to think about dolls.

    6. I have to say you only have too many dolls when you think you have to many dolls. If you promised yourself only to have two its okay if you fall in love with another doll. You know if you want to buy the doll its okay! Your not hurting yourself or causing your self not to function its still okay if you get another one.

    7. When you have to climb your way out of their stuff just to get out of the door every day.

I think it's individual. You have too many when you look around and say "Enough is enough".

    8. I have many dolls and some are forgottten and this is very very good for me because when I find them I fall in love again ^__~ It's like having a new doll, and I love them all, even when I don't remember where some of them are hidden, LOL...

    9. I actually hit my threshold recently -- I was up to ten large dolls and it totally overwhelmed me. I'm one of those people who likes all my dolls to be displayed in nice, complete outfits, with the right eyes/wigs/shoes, etc. and I just couldn't do it. They all had problems and, as a collection, looked bad to me, so I decided to whittle my collection down and sort of start over from scratch. The main thing, for me, is to slow down and acquire dolls at a slower pace, so I have time to kit them out before a new one comes along.

    10. I'm finding this thread interesting- and I agree with what's been said; "You have too many dolls, if the amount makes you unhappy."
I have 10 full dolls at home- and 2 on the way. I know certain people in my life think I have too many dolls- and I really never planned to get THIS many... but I honestly wouldn't know how to down-size my collection as I sincerely love all of my dolls. I would be really upset having to part with any of them.

I have MANY dolls... but not TOO MANY! ._.

    11. It's definantly different for every doll owner. I don't have any SD's right now but i've done the blythes and pullips thing, and really have found that i like all the little fiddly dolly "stuff" as much or more than the dolls themselves. So for me, I found that more than 4 dolls were too many because I would rather spend my hobby money on stuff for them rather than new dolls, and I want to have lots of options when it comes to dressing them up and making scenes with them.

But if you were the sort who prefered to keep the dolls dressed in one or two outfits and with a very specific set of accessories, or was more interested in collecting limited or rare or dolls with a certian theme, you might want more dolls. Or if you have a story that you are trying to represent charachters of, or if you just have a LOT of time to play with your dolls. :)

    12. I've never really hit the threshold of "too many dolls" yet. The most dolls I had at one time was 9 full dolls, 3 floating heads, and 1 Puki faceplate.

I downsized to 7 full dolls due to the fact I couldn't bond with two of them, and ended up trading one for a Volks MSD<3
Now, my crew seems alot happier. Some guys just "don't fit in" with the crew, and I don't bond as well with them.. :(

    13. Lol, thankyou. The OFFICIAL number of dolls I have, broading across Little Apple Dolls, Pullips and BJDs is definitly over 100 I think, well, it is if I count the floating heads! (and I still wouldn't say no to more, it's really just space holding me back)

    14. I will newer have too many dolls hehehe :-D

    15. When the spending starts to prevent me from enjoy my other pricey hobbies.

As for now, that means more than 4 dolls.;)

    16. I think its to many dolls when you get close to 50 honestly, thats alot of dolls ^^ Im keeping in the 20 somes myself.

    17. I don't think there is an exact number for "too many dolls". I think "too many dolls" is spending all of your money on bjds and bjd related things instead of purchasing your necessities. As long as you can balance those factors then, have as many as you want :). I only have 2 dollies right now :(.

    18. I think it's a space thing for me, so I try to do a "Somebody comes to Town, Somebody Leaves Town" thing. This is not always successful ;) I think it's when it starts being a chore to herd them and not fun.

    19. A) This too is an individual thing. Some of us don't even believe in this whole concept of "forgotten". You can have a whole roomful of dolls and still never forget about a single one of them. I have 31, and I have never ever "forgotten" about a doll-- is that even possible?

      But,

      (B) If by "forgotten" you mean "don't play with every day", you should know that they're absolutely NOT the same thing at all. Many of us don't require constant play to enjoy our dolls-- just looking at them & enjoying them is enough. I don't care if there are some dolls who've been wearing the same outfits for months and never come out for photos; I only play with whomever I feel like playing with, at any given time.

They're inanimate, they don't care if you let them sit quietly for months. And the way I see it, everybody gets loved in turn, one doll at a time, so where's the rush?

I don't think 50 is too many dolls! :D It's too many for ME, because my apartment can only hold about 32. I currently have 31. ^^ But if I could fit them, I would love to have 50.

    20. HAHAHAHA...!! When you find them under your bed and can't be sure how they got there, you mean? ^_^

(2 days ago I found a mini I'd forgotten about tucked in a carrying case. That's really BAD, you know?)

(ETA: I should clarify... I knew I had this particular doll, and what I wanted to do with him, but not where he'd been stashed for safekeeping. Out of sight, out of mind... "Oh HI, THERE you are!")
