1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

When do you have "too many" dolls?

Dec 26, 2009

    1. If you clean your house and unearth a BJD you haven't seen in years and forgot you had due to the multitudes of dolls you own... you might have too many.

    2. I also started out wanting only one, then wanting him to have a girlfriend. But instead I fell in love with B&G Sapphira and bought him because he was just so gorgeous. Then an offer I couldn't refuse for a DemonGarden Basil came along, and another Ebay project. Sigh. I do have too many, I think, but I do love them all, I have lots of space, I can afford them, so I can't have too many already, can I? :)

Still, I have made up my mind not to buy more, instead only buying hooves, eyes or wigs to make them look different. In your case, it seems different, because you only have two and have a set of characters in your head. Buying the last one would complete them, so that's not too many, either!

    3. I'd say you have too many if your spending money on dolls instead of utilities. ^_^; But, as long as you can afford to make all your bills, you can never have too many!

    4. Like others have said, if you have the space and money, there is no such thing as too many dolls.
But if you start getting so many that you can't remember them all, then yeah you should probably take a little break or sell a couple :sweat

    5. I laughed at this earlier today...but when I got home I found an extra Bory head I'd totally forgotten I'd had in a box.

      Ok, it's still funny XD

    6. I'd like to add a #4 to your list - When you don't remember their names anymore.

    7. I'm up to 10 plus 3 floating, and plan to get about that many again in the future to shell the charas I intend to shell . . . but I've even cut down on my wishlist/charas I'll put into resin. Each doll brings with it needs for the right eyes/wigs/faceup/stringing and sueding/clothes, and it might start to feel like just too much to deal with. Buying dolls can interfere with buying things for dolls :sweat.

    8. I'm only at two and wanting more, so...
I don't think it's too much of a problem to have multiple dolls if you take care of them, remember each of them, and still can afford everything else (housing, food, clothes, etc.) ... (all for yourself, I might add, not the dolls. ^^')

    9. Can this be applied to relatives? I don't remember all of their names on my best day, and I could use fewer relatives. ;)

    10. "Too many" is a relative concept, I believe. The quantity you can have depends on your money, on how much you want to spend, and of course on the space you've got for them. Other than that, I think a person should stop buying the moment they put the dolls before certain necessities, as with every hobby (I know a few cases, but they thankfully realized their mistake with enough time to correct it :D ).

As long as "hobby" doesn't turn into "obsession", I don't think you have to worry about the quantity of dolls you buy.

    11. I for one, am not an active doll owner (yet) but I figure when it comes to owning "too many dolls" is the point where you're too busy with the hassle, and not with the enjoyment of your resin baby. You have all of these dolls but you can't mess with them or change clothes etc etc.
      Another sort of "too many dolls" debate could be when you're breaking your back sending them off to get faceups or buying wigs or clothes or other accessories for your dolls but after all that money spent you have to work and pay it off @____@;
Needless though, some people have large groups of dollies (I mainly see on dA where people have an army of tinies) and they're content or very happy.

    12. To many dolls? Its more of a personal thing...some people think 6 is to many some thing 6 isn't enough. If you are happy with the number of dolls you have now then that's great; if you want more then go for it. ^__^

    13. Personally I just ordered my 9th bjd and feel that I'm reaching my limit now otherwise it's just too many to handle.

    14. When I start thinking "I'd better get rid of this and this and buy another one/buy something for myself", this usually means that I'd better stop and wait for a while. I don't want to be a consumer of dolls, I don't want to buy all the dolls I like, just those "I can't live without". Their numbers vary depending on my mood, financial abilities, period of my life etc. For example, there have been only 2 dolls in my closet since last September - I didn't buy any though I had some spare money. Now I want to buy 3 of them, very different and really new to me. I think the time has come.

    15. For me "too many" is simply having more than you really want/need...
when buying another doll which won't make you happy, then it is a sign that you have to draw the line already

    16. I'm currently waiting on my 2nd doll and was just thinking about this question the other day. Along with everything else mentioned (money etc) I feel the SIZE of the dolls could influence the number you think is too many.
For me 10 SD's would never work due to the size of my house but some feel 20 or so SDs are their comfort zone.
For me I'd quite happily have 30 pukis (dupilcates and all XD) and it seems like I'd still want more tinies!

    17. I'm not sure I would think I had too many dolls as long as I was still affectionate and attached to all of them. I sold one doll and am in the process of selling another and that will leave me with one tiny in the household, one tiny and two MSDs on the way. I didn't sell them because I had too many dolls, I sold them because I didn't need or want them.

So I'm not sure what my max number is because I haven't hit it yet! I'm planning on having near 50 dolls in the future, so we'll see!

    18. I'm popping back into this thread because I've been thinking about this lately. I've always had doll collections, one had 45 in it, another currently has 20-something (around 24 I think? I haven't counted recently, and it might be growing soon if I get my way.) And now my bjd collection which currently has 8 and four floating heads. When I love something, I buy them until I've got enough. And that's really it. My bjds will eventually be worth something to someone, and even if they're not, lots of people buy things for large sums that aren't worth anything to anyone but themselves. When I finish my bjd collection I'll just know that I've finished and there won't be any more after that. I don't really think having 'too many' is something I need to worry about, because if I can't display them all comfortably, then into a box in the basement/attic they go. I see nothing wrong with having half finished dolls, or not touching my dolls for days on end. It's owning them that I like- not the the other way around.

    19. too many for me is when the house is so full of them that you cant sit down anywhere without sitting on one and you are starving just to pay for them
basically there is no such thing as "too many" in my opinion, as long as you have time, patience, love and unfortunately money how many you have is not a problem

    20. I dunno, I have 8, + 3 spare heads. To some people that's too many. I know their mold, when I bought them, how I bought them, from where, same with 95% of the things they own, they all have backround stories etc. So to me, while I can keep track of that, it's not 'too many'. But once I can't remember those details, I probably should stay selling some.
