When is the price just too much?

Nov 23, 2010

    1. I think it is only too much if it affects your living costs. By that I mean if it is either the doll or food for a few months, then it is too much. But if you can afford the doll and still afford other things you need to live then it is fine. It really depends on what you are willing to spend and what you can spend. I know right now any doll is too much for me. But I have never spent more than $300. I only have msds and smaller though.

    2. All depends on how much i want the doll. If I think it's worth it and I have the money to afford it.. I'll go for it:D

    3. The price is too much when you're not willing to pay it. I thought $300 was too much for a 16mm doll -and still do- but still bought a Lati Yellow for as much because I fell in love with the face without regrets. Would I do it for every lati I thought was kinda cute? Absolutely not because it's too much for me to pay unless I'm 200% in love with the doll.

I've given up on buying a Volks Suiseiseki because I don't want to pay around 2k dollars for an old, possibly yellowed and damaged doll that won't come fullset from the company but I don't cringe at the 1.2-1.5k I have to save to afford my dream Dollfie Dream girl.

    4. Really depends on what you get with the doll, The smart dolfie is about $2000- $5000 right now. But Its fully robotic and is able to work in tandem with your iPhone/ipad/ computer. I'd be willing to pay that much for what would basically be my own chobit. But for just a limited that doesn't do anything but look pretty like my other dolls? No thanks. I could buy a new gaming pc for that.

    5. I would cringe at the thought of dolls over $1000 (my budgets have been considerably modest so far), but then again if it is a grail doll of mine, that fact would lower my resistance to paying for that much by a fair bit. But in general I wouldn't unless I was very certain I wanted it.

    6. Oh.My.Goodness.... That is freaking amazing!!!!

I no longer have a limit on price LOL. *WANTS*

    7. I've made myself somewhat a rule to not go above 800$, unless it's a super limited fullset or somesuch- which isn't really a lot for this hobby, but since I have very limited income I have to put a relatively low limit on how much I actually spend. Which is unfortunate, because there are so many gorgeous dolls out there and I want them all. D:

    8. Depending on your budget, the sky is the limit. I would not judge someone who spent $1000 or more on a doll. For myself though, at this point I would not spend that much! LOL

    9. Honestly it fluctuates depending on how much I'm able to (responsibly) spend at a given moment, how much I want the doll, how hard it is to find, whether layaway is an option (so it doesn't feel like spending a ton of money all at once), etc. I don't think there's really a "too much" but there's definitely a "too much for me" or "too much for right now".

    10. For me it depends on the doll. I am not willing to pay $400 for a Soom Mini Gem girl, fairy parts or not. I have a basic Soom Mini Gem, and while I love her, her posing leaves something to be desired. However, I'd be willing to spend that much on a Minifee.

    11. For me, I wouldn't spend more than $300 on a doll. But I'm just a poor college student. Maybe one day when I get my career going and start raking in real dough, I might spend more on a doll. But for now, I'm content with smaller, more affordable dolls. :)

    12. I would pay over $1000 if I had the money for an artisan doll, something amazing and artful that someone put lots of work into, but never anything simply "high end". I don't like to pay for branding, I like to pay for my product, and I'm always happy to a slightly higher price for something made by an artist than something from a factory. If the doll was a piece with more than just a basic body and head, and it was really a beautiful item with $1000+ of work put into it, it's worth my money for sure.

    13. Oh my goodness!!! Why have I not heard of this?! I might have to put all my other doll dreams on hold. >.<

p.s. I love your icon. Space Dandy is hilarious!

    14. i fear of the day i find a doll for more then 400. i think its just to much (as of right now)

    15. This is an interesting thread.

Years ago when I was collecting, I would have dropped probably $8-900 on a sculpt I really loved without batting an eyelash. This was my one and only hobby, I had next to no bills, and I had plenty of free money to do with whatever I chose. I doubt I would have EVER been able to bring myself to spend $1000+ though.

Now, I have two kids, only work weekends so I can stay home with said kids, own a house, have two vehicles that need maintenance once in a while, etc. Many more responsibilities and my priorities have shifted dramatically. When I love a more expensive doll, I automatically think, "Hmm... $780? We could use new carpeting." So, I cringe when I see dolls priced at over $500 and REALLY have to think it over when the price gets close to that point.

So, no. I would never pay $1000 or more for any doll on earth. Even if I could easily afford it, I truly don't believe I would even consider it. There are many lovely sculpts closer to my comfortable price range, so I'll stick with those. And I'm not saying it's wrong for others to spend that much, it's just not for me.

    16. The price varies according to the person's financial situation. I am not rich so $500 is too much for me but I still get dolls that are 1000+ because I like them. My Volks SD17 body cost me more than $1000 O__O but I love this body and I'm willing to pay for quality, thankfully the seller accepted layaway^^.....everything is possible thanks to layaway and savings lol in other words, I have no limits even though I don't do very well( financially speaking).

      • I know these dolls are amazing, and beautiful, but is paying over $1000 for a bjd too much in your opinion?

It depends on various factors. Finances and desirability are two such factors. Personally, if you could afford to pay $1000 for the doll and take care of the rest of your financial responsibilities, then I would say go for it. Collecting dolls is not the only expensive hobby out there. Ever looked into getting a pilot's license? What about cycling (the top end bikes are worth thousands)? Flying and cycling will have you spending more money than you would on any given bjd. I could list more expensive hobbies, but you get the point. Don't feel guilty about the price of a doll if you could afford it and desire it.

      • Does it depend on how much you truly love the doll? (that saying, the more the love, the more money you are willing to pay?)

That should be one factor. I say "should" because I bet there are people out there that collect these dolls just for the sake of collecting them without being attached to them. For me to be willing to pay top dollar for a doll I would have to desire the doll. I would have to picture myself using the doll and enjoying it. There is one doll at the moment that fits that criteria for me. I plan on her being my first doll. She also happens to be my grail doll? Why? Well, she costs $730, not including clothes and a wig or two. That's a lot of money! But...I really want her. She seems like the perfect fit for me, and I see myself loving her. So, I'm willing to shell over upwards of $700 for her, and more to make her complete.

    17. I nearly choked when I spent as much as I did for my most expensive one, who is the most expensive doll I have ever gotten, and I have a huge doll collection. I thought I was totally nuts. Do I regret it? Not at all as she is one of my absolute favorite dolls. I definitely think I got my money's worth with her.

    18. Price is a factor I take into consideration quite often.... If I fall in love with a sculpt and I see the price is through the roof, I just sadly forget it ever existed. I'm not rolling in the dough anymore so I have to be careful, but it's nice to dream sometimes!

    19. As time has passed I have routinely spent more than $1000 for a doll. Such dolls are treasures to me. The full set Soom Ignim, a gorgeous off topic painted eye Popovy Sisters, a newly acquired Popovy Sisters on-topic Open Eye doll, Angel Egg dolls (resin no longer in production so I imagine they will soar in cost), and on her way to me a Triffony anthro cat. In the beginning I decided I was not going to spend hundreds of dollars on a doll but as many of us can attest to, what you will spend grows with your appreciation and changing tastes. I have rehomed a few less expensive dolsl as I have zeroed in on others. Over time I may once again adjust my tastes.

I really want resin Enchanted Doll but I believe that ship has sailed as no new resin EDs have come on the market in years. And even the secondary market for them is way beyond my price range. The last one that sold on the ED forum went for $7000 I think or two and a half times her issue price. But if I had the money and one was in my sights then, yes, I would find a way to have her.
