When is the price just too much?

Nov 23, 2010

    1. I have recently discovered Popovy dolls so I can say yes... I would spend over $1000. Also having been a part of the Blythe community where people are buying dolls over $1000 left, right and centre it doesn't seem too much for a doll that for me, is a work of art ^_^

    2. I discovered Leeel quite recently and their dolls are over $1000 but I don't think I am capable of spending so much on a doll. I'll get buyer's remorse really really easily!

    3. 100% subjective. This is a luxury hobby after all: it's too much when it's too much for your budget. Obviously this will change as your budget changes.

For me personally: I've spent $900 on a doll, and there have been times when $300 was too expensive. So yeah, too expensive just means it's too expensive for whoever is doing the spending. It's not like this is a rational or necessary thing to spend money on to begin with.

    4. At first, I thought it was really expensive for a doll. The one I love is about $400 and I thought it was too high. However, I just can't stop loving her and now I found that in this hobby love is more important than price. I really can't give her up!

    5. If it's a limited edition doll and I really like it, I might be willing to shell out a thousand dollars for it, provided that I have the time to save for it, or if I have money for it, then I'd go for it. It'd probably be better if it's just a regular edition doll, though. All the more time for me to save. xD \shot
However, I think that if doll prices were all like, a thousand dollars or something, I probably would have to quit the hobby or something. Though for me it'd be worth it, I think that in the end, it'd be kind of too painful for me to part with that much money for well, a lot of dolls.
Bottomline is, if I really like the doll, then I'd be willing to buy it. But, if all dolls cost that much [$1000-2000], then well, that's too much. 8D

    6. I wouldn't spend over $1000 for a doll, or anything in general that requires to be sent though the mail and is coming from overseas as this adds extra costs on top of the doll, but if it's a doll I feel in love with deeply I might consider it, but I would have to make sure I was deeply in love with it first

    7. If a BJD costs more than your rent and living expenses (for even a month) it is too much. Living beyond your means only ends up in debt and a ton of guilt. You want to enjoy your doll, not worry about what your going to eat every time you look at the shipping update.

    8. I wouldn't spend over maybe $500 for a doll.

I'll come back to this post in a year or two and laugh, though, I'm sure.

    9. I love 1/6 and 1/4 dolls. So, for me, more of 450 USD is too much.

    10. I think it becomes too much when you stop paying necessary things to buy it... or when you have to sell a kidney, your spleen and your liver to get it :XD:

    11. I generally find anything a bit over the $1,000 mark too much for me. Like I'd love to own a Volks Williams, and have considered many times to save for him, but I cannot realistically see myself spending $1,600+ initially on a doll. I know full well I've spent this amount and more on clothes and accessories for the current dolls I own, though.

    12. Enredadiza hahahahahahaha well said:dance

    13. I think anything over 3k is too much for me...but I have to really love and need it in my collection to pay more than 1,500, IMO.

    14. I would say the price is just too much when the price is because the doll includes pieces that I simply would never use.

There's actually a doll on the Marketplace now, whose owner is selling as a fullset, that I would buy in a heartbeat if they weren't charging so much, and I know they're charging that much because it's the fullset. I don't care about the wig eyes or clothes.

Also, that person who's selling a not even resin fullset teenie gem on the Marketplace for more than most people who are selling all the resin pieces for Little Gems that are just as old and uncommon as that Teenie Gem. If it had all the pieces, maybe but I doubt I'd buy it even then. It's not like there are fewer of those dolls in existence than the Little Gems that I could get for less, and those Little Gems would've cost more to buy in the first place!

    15. When I'm interested in a doll, I look at pictures of him/her once each day, just to make sure I still like it enough to spend a lot of money on.
I'm pretty sure however that there is a line for me around 600€ for a doll without accessories.
I'm very picky when it comes down to molds, so when I fall in love I'll probably buy the doll XD.
I'm not a collector (just buying an expensive doll to have it). If I don't find it aesthetically pleasing, I'll leave it for someone who does :).

    16. I think cost is a factor (for me anyways) to a bjd. Not a huge one, but still. Kinda like if you wanted an older Dollfie Dream that Volks doesn't make anymore, you can't really get her unless you have over $1000 to get her. Plus, for younger buyers like myself, my mom has to use her bank to pay for my dolls (I give her the money to do that!!!). She doesn't agree with the prices, so I have to pay attention and think what is acceptable to her. Overall, if I had my own job and earned enough money to buy reallly expensive dolls, I would. I say, if you love the sculpt a lot and/or it's limited, price isn't a factor at all.:sumomo:

    17. At this point, I can't see spending that much money on a doll. I definitely do understand why some people would want to, but I always ALWAYS look for sales. Obviously I can't predict the future; I have no idea what kind of things I'll do later on. Price definitely matters to me; of course I'll see lots of dolls that I would love to own, but I just could not feel comfortable buying one. However, I also think that if you really love something, go for it! Don't let a price tag stand in your way unless you truly, honestly do not have the necessary funds.

    18. Actually, $1000 seems pretty reasonable price for me. I'm saying this maybe because I usually purchase fullsets directly from the company...I actually do have a dolly who was LE and discontinued, and paid less than $3000 on the secondhand market to get her under my wing. Didn't have a problem with the last penny.
But I am a perfectionist after all, so if I see a tiniest thing not to my liking it's a nono. So as far as I'm conecerned, I think I'm rolling.

    19. I personally wouldn't like to spend over $1000 on a doll, around $700 seems to be about my limit. I have two dolls that are hybrids and after getting the right pieces, both totaled around the $700 mark, and my Iplehouse girl wasn't too far off after adding in shipping. When I say my limit is $700-ish, I mean just the doll (head and body) itself, not including eyes, wig, clothes, shoes, accessories, props.....I've probably spent more on extras than I have on resin. O_O

However, even though I have personal limits, that doesn't mean I don't think any doll is worth over $1000. Some of the limited, rare, fullset or OOAK dolls obviously have a ton of work put into them, and I don't think it's unreasonable to have that price tag. I just personally can't justify buying a doll whose cost is higher than a mortgage payment on my house and Jeep payment combined. XD

      • I know these dolls are amazing, and beautiful, but is paying over $1000 for a bjd too much in your opinion?
It is too much for me to pay for one doll. I can think of a lot of stuff I could get for $1,000. But, just because I wouldn't personally pay that price for one doll, it doesn't necessarily mean that is too much or that it's unreasonable. I know there are people who will, and often do, pay much more than $1,000 for a single doll. That's fine as long as they want to do it and can tolerate it financially.

      • Or do you feel this is a reasonable cost?
I guess it depends on the doll. $1,000 might not be unreasonable for a very limited fullset from a company with known excellent quality. There are some dolls that are just overpriced, though, in my opinion. Some of those are not worth $1,000 even though that's their price tag.

      • Does it depend on how much you truly love the doll? (that saying, the more the love, the more money you are willing to pay?
Not for me. I 'love' all my dolls, but I can't imagine any doll that I'd want so badly I'd be willing to pay $1,000+ for it. I have an upper price limit for resin, excluding wigs, eyes & accessories.
