When is the price just too much?

Nov 23, 2010

    1. I just wouldn't spend more that 300£ for a doll, no matter how beautiful... I just don't think it's worth it

    2. For me the cost of a bjd doesn't really matter as long as the quality is worth it, the brand is good, and the size is accurate. I have a hard time looking at soom dolls because even their small 1.7 or 2.2 dolls are around 400 plus to buy a full set.

    3. When you're talking about Iplehouse are you talking about the dolls or the outfits? EIDs are hard to fit - I buy the shoes & I've gotten suits (they get them from Freedom Teller - at least the one I bought - so the quality is incredible). I prefer IH to Soom - due to the variety. I've GOT an Idealian & 2 Soom SGs but that's all I want because I'm not into fantasy so much & they look so similar. IH manages to give a lot of variance in sculpts. Both companies are about the same w/pricing. AND I really wish Soom had more Idealian clothes because not all the EID stuff FITS my boy :(

    4. Depends on the doll and the moment in my life. At this moment I am still a student and I don't have that kind of money to spend it would be very irresponsible if I did. If i found a full-time job and have the money and I think it would be worth it, maybe I would...

    5. Paying over a $1000 is a bit too expensive unless it's a really limited doll (like only one in the world) Unless I had extra money and I really liked that doll, I guess I would buy it :)

    6. As of now, I would be totally comfortable buying a blank doll for roughly $500 USD, and I've bought a fullset for $800 CAD recently. I'm not sure if I would be completely comfortable with a doll that is $1,000 and over. But who knows, I may see a fullset for that much one day and fall in love. But I don't think I could justify buying a blank for over $600 USD at the moment.

    7. I wouldn't pay more than $300 for a blank doll (due to budget and personal choice), which is why I'm really thankfull companies like resinsoul make cheaper ones!

    8. My price limit for a doll with a faceup would be about $400 usually. I could probably make an exception with a doll I really wanted, but only if I felt I was financially stable enough to pay that much for a doll. xD; Woe to the jobless college student.
I'd also say it depends on the size of the doll, too. My limit for the price of a tiny or YoSD would be about $200, around $300 for MSDs, and the $400 limit for SD and up. :3

    9. Iple, Soom, Ringdoll, Volks etc it's just too much for my wallet though I covet certain dolls of theirs madly. I just cannot rationalize anything like that for a doll. $200 is my absolute limit, period and usually I'm buying used and trying to spend a whole lot less. 90% of the dolls I own I put together for $150 or less, usually less. The most I ever paid for a doll was my RS Dai and that took me forever to pay off. I loved her on sight and I really wanted one, but that was a lot of $$$ for me and I don't know that I'd do that again.

BJD's are so much easier to do when I'm buying a cheap head here a junk body there. New fron the factory that's just too much $$$ for me. I may have spent the cost of one Iplehouse doll on my whole collection, but at least I have a dozen dolls to show for that, not one lonely ultra expensive doll who will forever be alone because I can't afford to buy him anyone like him to play with. If I was ever super rich I'd probably buy half a dozen Iple, Soom and Ringdoll dolls but not on my current budget. I'm about done actually buying resin. I'm at the point where I'm one body away from having all my heads on bodies. All that's left is doing the faces and making clothes for them all. That will take me a while but when I'm done, I'm likely done.

This is actually about 10 more dolls than I ever planned on getting when I started the whole BJD thing. :P I did very, very well with what I've spent but resin dolls are way too expensive for me to be able to keep on collecting them. I knew I'd only be able to afford so much and I've pretty much gotten myself there, hit my limit, sans that one body. I love my little collection. I think each doll in it is very special and worth having but this is it. I still have the one head to body, but when that's done I quit. Iple Luo he's the one doll I still covet madly but even used he's just not a doll I can afford and I'm pretty much resigned to not having him. There are just some dolls out there that I will have to settle for admiring, not owning, that's all, and he's definitely one of them. What can I say? I've got Iple taste and a Resinsoul/Mirodoll budget, lol...

    10. At BJD world no doll's price is too much, it's work of art, there will be always someone who will appreciate it and willing to pay for it

    11. When I can't afford it.! :'D

      badum tisssssshhhhhh~

    12. It is this kind of thing that turns people to thinking about buying recasts.

for me the Price will never be too much. I love BJDs. I love everything about them, from the way that they are first sculpted from the artist's idea to the whole process of bringing them home.

IF I want a certain sculpt or doll, then I will hunt it down in the second hand market place. (manily DoA's MP) Because that is the only way that I can obtain the dolls.
I can't afford to buy limiteds directly released from the doll company, but if I like the head-scuplt enough I will look for just a head or find a seller willing to do a long layaway, I have obtained my most expensive dolls in this manner.

A long hard hunt, careful negotiations with a seller, and most of all patience, patience, patience!

If you want something hard enough then the price would never be a deterrent.

    13. I'm with those who feel that nothing is ever too much, as long as you're willing to pay (and can afford it).

For me, $1000 is way too much. I actually turned down the chance to buy my absolute grail because the seller wanted too much for him at the time and I just couldn't justify spending that much money on him. I have only ever seen one turn up on the MP since but I guess it just wasn't meant to be. But obviously someone else wanted this particular doll because I don't think my friend had any issues selling him. :) I'm glad he got a good home, even if he was too rich for my wallet!

My limit right now seems to be around $400-$500 before I start backing away. I can save up for a doll if I truly want it, but I have a lot of other life expenses and it's hard to buy a doll when 1000000 other things around the house need to be done/ bought. Down the road I may be willing to pay more but not right now.

    14. See, I think almost any price for a BJD is reasonable for companies to want to pay. However I limit myself to a max of $300 for a doll. If a doll costs more than that, than I would rather use the money for other things.

    15. I would like to say that I would never pay that much for a doll but I know that's not true. If I were to ever find my character Nick in doll form I would pay any price to have him, even if I have to save money for over 3 years.

    16. For me it depends on the size and quality. I still would never spend over 500. However if someone loves a doll that is 1000 and they can financialy, go for it.

    17. Story of my life.
In collection and castumezation there is no such thing as too expensive unless you cant afford it.

    18. It depends on how long a layaway I could have. I have only a small budget for fun each month. Smaller than $200. Many sellers will do no layaway or if so only small one, so I can only afford small price dolls in that time. Cannot make myself pay $200 or more a month for a toy, when that same money could keep someone in food or wood or propane for the winter. It feels too selfish and I would not enjoy the doll when it arrived, so that is "too expensive" for me. I have little dolls, but I love them very much, and sellers have been very nice to me to allow some layaway so I can buy the dolls, and I appreciate very much this.

    19. I have a pretty small income, but for me, $1000 isn't too much for the right doll. I've come sort of close to that with a few of my dolls, though I haven't hit that point yet. I do plan on saving for Volks Reisner, no matter how long it takes me and no matter how much I have to pay for him. I won't spend more than market price (and will likely hunt until I can find someone selling for slightly under that), but he's beautiful and I want him in my collection. I'd rather have him than all the dolls I could buy with the money spent for him. Even if I have to save for a long time, I know I'd be happier doing that than buying dolls I can afford sooner but don't like as much. There are, of course, other dolls I do want who aren't so expensive, though I think he's the only one over the $1000 mark. But to me, that Reisner would be so special and cherished that it would make his price worth it. I'm a very sentimental person and have an odd system of valuing things, but somehow I make it work.

    20. I think it depends on the doll and the amount of my income, one month a doll may be way out of my price range but the next I may be able to get it and have money to spare so it just honestly depends.
