When is the price just too much?

Nov 23, 2010

    1. $1,000+ IS definitely a lot of money to spend on any hobby item, but I have done it three times now with my dolls. If it's a sculpt that you REALLY love & it's doable, then go for it! BJDs tend to hold their value, so if for some reason you ever had to part with it, you wouldn't be out a lot. : )

    2. Well 1000 for just a blank doll with just the face up and no wig or clothes is too much for me. I think. But if it's a full set then I wouldn't mind. I know I've come close to paying 1000 before for dolls. I think the trinity dolls from Dollmore are super pretty but I think they are pretty pricey. But then you have to consider their size. I still don't think I could pay $2000+ for one. Even though I like them. But that's just me. I'm poor. Hahaha!

    3. The price is too much if I don't like the doll, or don't have the money, or don't NEED the doll for my story (unless I just adore said doll....)....

    4. In my opinion they're already too much. I think its insane to spend hundreds, even more than like 50+ on a doll. But of course thats subjective. Anyways if you can afford it than no doll is too expensive. I saw this one lady who had kids and everythingand she spent the familys money on more and more dolls. Basically as long as youre taking care of your family or any other responsibilities, i dont think a doll is too expensive.

But to give a short answer id spend no more than 500 on a doll.

    5. I will never say never as I would probably pay over 1000 dollars if it was something I really loved and had been searching for. I came from the world of ooak clay dolls and the norm on many of them were 2 to 3 thousand dollars. I probably would never pay more than 1200.00 at this time in my collecting

    6. If I can support myself on doll money for a month, then I feel like it's just too much. I just bought about 600 USD worth of dolls just within a month. I feel like I need a therapy or counseling. My apartment rent is 350 a month.

    7. I guess it depends on the financial situation and the moment. Right now I would never ever spend over 1000 usd for one doll. :shudder

      • I know these dolls are amazing, and beautiful, but is paying over $1000 for a bjd too much in your opinion?
      - I have never spent that much on a BJD but I have spent more than that on a different type of doll...

      • Or do you feel this is a reasonable cost?
      - I think it is un reasonable in many ways but like I said I have done it myself...

      • Does it depend on how much you truly love the doll? (that saying, the more the love, the more money you are willing to pay?)
      - sI think if the doll is what you want and you have the money without getting into debt and will enjoy it then why not?! so yes, if you really love it why not :-)

    8. I feel like this question is incredibly subjective since everyone's limits are different. When I first discovered BJDs, I thought the pricing was absurd. Like $500 for a blank doll? Never would I ever spend that !

But now I'm in the mindset that if you can afford to spend however much you want without any financial consequences and it truly makes you happy, then I say there is no price to your happiness. Whether it's $200, $500, $1000, or even $5000.

That being said, I'm excited for my new $1800 BJD. :)

    9. Where the heck do you live that rent is 350 a month?! But I totally agree. If it's anywhere near what a month's rent would be, nope, would never buy it. I have trouble convincing myself to spend $140 on a doll I really want, never mind $1400.

If I'm honest, I don't think most of them are WORTH that kind of money. Maybe a huge Goddess-size or Fanstasy fullset doll, but blank? Not a chance.

    10. Haha I live in a some run-down old college town apartment. My first ever non-secondhand doll was $130, plus extra fees for extra stuff. It quickly escalated into $600. Woah.

    11. I think it matters the rarity of the doll.. But even if it isnt rare and still over $1000..

I live in Japan currently, and they have a lot of second hand doll stores.. Most dolls there, although they're used go from $700-$6000.. Most of them are Volks, and those are expensive already, but even dolls that are damaged can still be from $1000+.. I feel like, if you really love the doll, and can afford it.. Defiantly research and find a real one before spending so much..

    12. Its hard to answer. Yes, it depends on how much u love the doll. I saw the price of dolls in japan auctions are very high in average. So when i have an ideal doll, i would continue searching for it in different web markets. If it is too high for me, i would leave myself a cool period, in which i would stop myself see its photos and infos. If i still really want that doll at the end, the final option is saving money for it, no matter how much it is!

    13. It wholly depends on the doll and whether or not it's a limited doll. If one of my grail dolls appeared with a $1000+ price tag i would definitely do my damnest to aquire it. But if it's basic doll but with a face-up from a specific artist, then I wouldn't, no matter how highly regarded the face-up artist is since i want to order the face-up myself

    14. Honestly over 200$ is too much for me right now, but I also have a 6000$ surgical procedure in my near future :horror:

    15. I personally would never spend more than $400 on a doll. Why? Well, as an example, I saw the Dust of Dolls Doom Bomi on sale and was IN LOVE. I really wanted her. But I'm the type of person who has a hard time pouring love into my dolls, it takes time, and I think if I had bought her I would have regretted it. She is my ideal 'grail doll' I guess, but I can make any doll my 'grail doll' with the right amount of effort and time. I'd rather spend $1000 dollars into creating a character for bit cheaper of a doll than spend $1000 on something blank that will take more time to love (not that I would ever). Plus, for that much for one doll, I could get more dolls that are at maybe the same quality (Who cares if it's limited. There will always be more dolls in the future). Yeah no, I'm a cheap person.

I also can't justify spending that much money at once. Just...I got other stuff to pay in life to be honest.

Nothing against people who are willing to pay a lot! You've got more guts than me, more power to you. :XD:

    16. I think there's no such thing as an unreasonable price so long as someone wants it and has the finances to pay for it! From that perspective, it does definitely depend on each person's personal taste and judgment, how happy BJDs make them, and how badly they might want a specific doll.

For me personally I'm fortunate enough to be in a position where I'd gladly buy a dream doll for over $1k - I just haven't found a doll I've fallen hard enough for yet.

    17. I bought my first doll for close to $700 and just bought two more in an event sale for close to $1000 total. Each time, I think, "OMG I'm spending so much money!" But the dolls make me happy. I have a dream doll who's currently on offer for about $3000. Would I spend that much? If I could afford the money easily, yes. But only because, to me, he's spectacular.

    18. I have always thought 1000 or more was just way too much for a doll, I have one on my list that's 950 and he's very much a 'want but too much for me' sort of doll. But then I saw Fairyland's SD seahorse and wow, I totally would have dumped that much if I could have afforded to even put her on layaway. Though, realistically, I can't see myself dropping 1k into just a doll when I have school bills and loans. 1k is a month and a half of rent.

    19. I don't think it is too much in general. We all have different resources and priorities, that's all
I'd spend 2000 for a doll but not for a dress, foe exemple
