When is the price just too much?

Nov 23, 2010

    1. I know these dolls are amazing, and beautiful, but is paying over $1000 for a bjd too much in your opinion?
      Way, way too much.

Or do you feel this is a reasonable cost?
      Not at all reasonable.

Does it depend on how much you truly love the doll? (that saying, the more the love, the more money you are willing to pay?)
That being said, I've bought a head and its body will put it within $50 of $1000. That's not counting the hundreds of dollars on eyes/wigs/clothes/accessories I've already spent and will spend, and the additional hundred or so for modding and makeup. Ridiculous? Yes, but totally worth it. XD

Although I don't think I'd spend that much again. The only other doll on my wishlist is $700, and I'm waffling really hard over buying her even though she's beautiful and perfect and I love her very much.

    2. If you fall in love with something....and its not necessarily a doll......then its not a price thing for me....if i want something and i can afford it....then i will get it! Someone spends that much money on clothes, designer shoes, jewelry or expensive holidays or someting like that, i buy dolls instead and that makes me happy!!!

    3. Surely it's all relative to what income someone has? A recent Enchanted Doll (off topic on DoA) sold for $13,500, which I would never ever consider but that's because my income isn't sufficient. If I were a millionaire then $13,500 would be nothing. So if you can afford to spend $1000+ on a bjd, good for you. Would I? Not until I become a millionaire ;)

    4. I don't think that 1000$ is a reasonable price for a BJD but... every hobby like this of collecting BJD have some rare pieces or just beautiful pieces that automatically requires a price such as 1000$. People who have a hobby do not hesitate to spend much of their pay for their hobby, even if it is unreasonable ^^
To me, even if I am a BJD lover, I don't think that one day I'll spend 1000$, or as Kayjay, if I become a millionaire maybe I'll spend it for a BJD I love XD

    5. I know these dolls are amazing, and beautiful, but is paying over $1000 for a bjd too much in your opinion?
In general, anything(I'm including everything not just dolls) hitting 3 digits is considered expensive for me.
Especially I'm just a student,I only have some savings and little earnings from the part time errands etc.However.I find myself willing to pay double the amount stated for a doll O_O................
      I'm shocked by this myself,really.
It's a miracle that I come from a family which has enough income to support my hobby >_>" Well, not to the extent of getting few at a shot but maybe once in a month or two.
Which is why I find it expensive since I have not start to earn that much yet.

Or do you feel this is a reasonable cost?
Standing from an outsider point of view,it's a definite no.It's like how I felt why people went after branded goods with that much money???It works the same way for dolls too,it's never reasonable but it's just because I've fallen deep into the hobby.

Does it depend on how much you truly love the doll? (that saying, the more the love, the more money you are willing to pay?)
Yes,I must say that.I'm a bad kid lol.In fact, my family actually refused to get me another new doll after I got my last AS doll.
However,I fell deeply in love with Volks GR Okita,I could say I'm pampered,my mom couldn't bear seeing me staring at the screen daily at the photo and crying silently because of that,so she got me one.The price was crazy.but I really love him.Once there is a family objection going on,I am not allowed to get anything even if it's my money....So I really thanked my mom for the boy

    6. For me, If a doll is in the $400-$500 dollar range, I have to stop myself; a lot of the most gorgeous dolls are in that range, but it just doesn't fit into my budget atm.

    7. Let's be honest if I had $1000 laying around to spend on whatever I wanted I'd go and buy a super nice doll. I don't have that kind of money so it kind of galls me when I hear people are spending that much but it's their money.

    8. For me, personally, I buy based on who I fall in love with, not on price. Then again, I'm 28 and have a solid, well-paying job, so I can afford the pricier dolls.

I think it comes down to how much the doll means to you, and why you want to buy it. I see BJDs partly as a collection hobby....but mostly as a creative medium. I want to plan, plot and carefully design my dolls...create my perfect face-up, find and style the perfect wig, carefully select clothing and props, spend hours posing and taking photos, and then sharing them. For me the hobby is more about creation and less about collecting, and considering the money I've dropped on other art related things, several hundred or even a thousand for a stunningly well made canvas isn't too unreasonable.

    9. Dolls past a certain price kind of put a mental block in my head about touching/playing with them. The dolls I have planned don't go past $600 for nude and my current dolls are under $300 (though they're also 1/4. I'm willing to go higher for bigger dolls.). After the price raises too high for me, I don't feel like I can have fun with them because the monetary expense will keep banging in my head.

Heck, I'm even scared to ask people if I can poke their limited dolls at doll meets. @_@

It might change with my financial situation or whatever else I'm paying for at the same time. When I was at community college, my current dolls were almost the same price as one semester's tuition which felt like a big deal. But now at CSUF, they're more like one tenth of a semester's tuition which feels like less, but also makes me go "OH MY GOD I SHOULDN'T SPEND SO MUCH WHEN I SPENT THAT MUCH EDUCATING MYSELF" x_x

      • I know these dolls are amazing, and beautiful, but is paying over $1000 for a bjd too much in your opinion?

For me, it´s for sure way too much. For other people, it´s their money they spend, and not my problem in any way.

      • Or do you feel this is a reasonable cost?

Not in my opinion. I think the extra cost comes just for rareness or the "brand mark". I think these dolls are already very expensive, but the normal price can be explained by the hand crafting, designing and material costs. But to pay double or triple price for basicly similar doll just because it´s rare and limited, makes me feel a bit confused. The extra value you pay for that is just inside your head. Of course if there´s more detail, more difficult model or some special materials, the value raises compared to normal doll of same maker.

      • Does it depend on how much you truly love the doll? (that saying, the more the love, the more money you are willing to pay?)

In my case, no. It depended on that in the time when I decided if to buy a basic Littlefee doll to be my first doll, and how that money felt soooo high price for me. I considered it for several months to be sure if wanted to use the about $370 for a doll. But to consider using $1000 for a doll... Excluded the possibility of becoming a lottery millionaire or something similar happening suddenly, there is no chance I´d even consider using that much for one single doll. I´d very likely never feel any doll to be worth that much money for me. In the price range choosing to buy a doll more cute and special in price of $370 than less cute doll for $250 I was able to choose the one I liked more. But to the price range with four numbers... I´m not even thinking about it unless that millionaire thing comes true. ^^

    10. I know these dolls are amazing, and beautiful, but is paying over $1000 for a bjd too much in your opinion?
In my opinion, yes. I'm not saying they aren't worth it, I just can't justify it right now. Anything over $250 is a bit out of reach really, but I'm a poor college student with a costly major.

Or do you feel this is a reasonable cost?
Er, guess I sorta answered that already, they could be very well worth that I suppose, though I do think some companies overcharge. But that's like buying designer anything, in those cases you're really just buying the name. Volk and soom mainly, though I can understand smaller, or home-run companies costing more, that's justified most of the time.

Does it depend on how much you truly love the doll? (that saying, the more the love, the more money you are willing to pay?)
I guess it does, though price is a turn off for me. I'd love to get a ebony cocori or ashanti, but I just can't justify the price of $500-$1000, maybe when I get a steady high paying job, but not for a long long time if ever. Really, I won't pay much more than $200 altogether for a doll.

    11. My mother hates it that I want to spend around 600$ for a doll. I don't know if I would spend 1000$ for a doll. I don't earn a lot money so paying 600$ for a doll is much to me. But there are dolls that are worth it! I am totally in love with Ashanti (Iplehouse) or a Benny (Iplehouse). I think they are worth their prices.

    12. I think I'd be willing to pay that much for a doll I really really loved- my Re-Che for example, was released and sold out just a month or so before I joined the hobby. When I spotted him I fell in love, and I was willing at one point to pay up to or just over $1000 for him on the open market place. Thankfully he didn't cost me quite that much, but he's still the most expensive doll I've ever purchased and in my opinion, well worth the money.

I always need to love the dolls I buy- even if that intense adoration of the sculpt only lasts for a little while, I won't buy unless I feel it.

    13. for me , the limit is what i can pay comfortably. It can be 200 one day and 1500 the other. Money s very relative, i only look at it in the way it affect my life. If my life is in a position that i can do all and still have the luxury of spending 1000+ in a doll, i'll do it. People spend much much more in cars just because it is THAT car, and they could do the same stuff with another good car thousands of dollars cheaper.
Dolls are my rush just like cars are some other people's. I just spend what i can, but as i said, that can change, and the cypher per se is not a limit for me.

    14. I know these dolls are amazing, and beautiful, but is paying over $1000 for a bjd too much in your opinion?

No, it's not. I have paid more than $1000 for a doll and was seriously considering spending $1000 for a head alone at one point because I wanted one that damn bad, and I know I will prob be spending more than a $1000 again in the future. I am looking at you, Konoe Tsukasa. Some dolls really just are worth that much and as my favourite brand is Volks, a fullset LE or FCS doll has a retail price of around $1k, so that's not taking into account secondhand market prices. I do a lot of market research for my dolls before purchasing because I do like to save money where I can, but if research shows over time that's what I have to pay, I'll pay it. On the flip side, there are some dolls I would not pay $100 for because I feel they are a waste of money because the quality is not comparable to the price tag.

Or do you feel this is a reasonable cost?

For some dolls, it's an outright bargain.

Does it depend on how much you truly love the doll? (that saying, the more the love, the more money you are willing to pay?)

A doll I only like at $200 is a waste of money for me compared to the doll I love at $1000. I am not happy with second best, and I believe in quality over quantity. I am pretty fussy when it comes to my dolls, and I have learned that trying to settle for less than the best of what I want always leads to me being unhappy with the results and selling it.

    15. I know these dolls are amazing, and beautiful, but is paying over $1000 for a bjd too much in your opinion?

No, I don't think it's too much if it's something special that you happen to love. Even though I must be very frugal with my doll monies, I could always save up over a long period of time, do layaways etc. to get what I truly love. And let's face it, having several BJD's easily adds up to the same cost pretty quickly (and very few of us stop at just one)...so theoretically you could just have one big spectacular doll instead of a small collection for the same price if that's what you really wanted.

Or do you feel this is a reasonable cost?

What is considered reasonable price for an individual is relative to several factors, including their own personal income level, the rariety of the doll, the size of the doll, the extras it comes with, etc.

Does it depend on how much you truly love the doll? (that saying, the more the love, the more money you are willing to pay?)

Yes, this is absolutely key in anyone's buying decision. You could easily spend over a $1000 on a doll you truly love and have it be a good buy...while on the other hand, you could spend over $100 on a doll you're just settling for without any true attachment, and that would be a big waste of money.

    16. I've not spent over $500.00 for a doll yet and I'm happy with the ones I have. Don't have the budget for it. I can't get that kind of money together in a hurry and I really can't justify spending it on a doll. So I see dolls that I definitely think are worth the big bucks, but I won't be buying them. I'd have to have a long layaway to pay off a doll in that range-a very long layaway! Right now, I'd have to say $600.00 is about tops for me.

      • I know these dolls are amazing, and beautiful, but is paying over $1000 for a bjd too much in your opinion?
To me, $1000 for me is unjustifiable. The percentage of dolls even $4-700 are a lot more than dolls that cost $1000. I could see my dad getting a camera for around that much, but I would need to agree with my parents (because they'd call me nuts and send me to my doc, pronto) if I said I was getting a $1000 doll. There are a lot of really nice dolls that cost that much, but none have ever persuaded me to think of ever going that high.

      • Or do you feel this is a reasonable cost?
I do not feel this reasonable for me. Maybe if I was a billionaire, $1000 wouldn't feel like a lot to me, but I'm not. I feel a reasonable cost is somewhere between $6-700 with the EMS, clothes, and extras. It's a reason I've kind of gravitated away from Volks, for the most part. Sure, I have two $100 Dollfies, but the BJDs are so pricey. Dollmore (where I got my doll) has equally awesome BJDs for $1-200 less than that.

      • Does it depend on how much you truly love the doll? (that saying, the more the love, the more money you are willing to pay?)
Love shouldn't cost that much, in my opinion. I love my doll, and she was only $350 (with EMS, face up, and one outfit and shoes) so I think she was something like $270. That's cheap for me (wouldn't have been 5-years ago:sweat:lol:). And sure, I do like the dolls Volks has, and I'd like one eventually, but it's just not in the cards right now.

      No biggie:).

I have Emma, and I'm happy with her because she represents something to me that I had really only dreamed about. I never really thought I'd find the willpower to save up, order, and actually acquire a BJD - ever. After a few years of trying to beg my mom for one (after being successful with my dollfies), and her not budging, I never thought I'd have the strength to save up $350 to get a doll.

I had always thought that I'd never last that long. Something was bound to go seriously ary, and end it all again (and something almost did!:doh). Because I had tried to save up for another doll last year, but there was stuff I found out in my ongoing research that convinced me that the doll I was saving for wouldn't be a great first doll for me. But by luck, and I-don't-even-know-what, I did it:).

      But I strongly believe I couldn't do that with a $1000 doll.

    17. I think anything over $1500 is unreasonable.

    18. It depends on my income I guess, so for now I won't buy a doll over $500.
