When is the price just too much?

Nov 23, 2010

    1. I personally would never spend $1000 USD or more on a doll, but if someone wants to and can afford it, then how they spend their money is none of my business.

As far as how "reasonable" a price that high is, I honestly don't know enough about how much time, effort and expense it costs a company so that they price a doll in that range, so I can't say how appropriate the cost is based on workmanship alone.

    2. Mainly, 1000 dollars is only for SOOM monthlys, and the monthly better be a good one. I do have other things I need to spend money on.

    3. I tell myself I shouldn't, but I tend to compare the cost to other things I could by for that amount. For example 1000$ is too much for me because it's a month's rent or a new computer, which I really need, or a sofa, which I also really want. I know that I still might spend 1000$ on a doll if you count in all the clothes, wigs, eyes and other accesories I buy for it, but that's over a longer period of time and then I feel it's okay.
Most important thing, however, is that, no matter how much I spend on a doll, I always have backup money. For unexpected bills, or most importantly, mostly because I've experienced this before, medical bills for my chinchillas. If they suddenly got really sick and needed immidiate help I would definitely regret it if I'd spend my last saved money on a BJD.
The bottom line is really that I spend what I feel is right. If I really want a doll, but I feel bad for spending so much on it, I wouldn't buy it because it wouldn't feel right. It's not just BJDs, I do that with all the things I buy. I really love shopping for clothes and makeup, but no matter how much I love a certain thing I wouldn't buy it if it was too expensive. I once bought a dress worth 450$ and I didn't want to wear it because I was afraid something would happen to it. I want to feel comfortable with my stuff and I don't want to own stuff I'm terrified of ruining because of the cost. ;)

    4. For a 1000$ the doll better be extremely Limited like the DD Saber Lily, but other then that I wouldn't spend over 500 on a single doll.

    5. Yes, I could pay for a doll 1 000$, now I like the girl which in base costs 600$ and if here to add delivery, a make-up, qualitative eyes and a wig, at least one complete set of clothes, footwear it will turn out 1000$.
I don't say that for me it is cheap, but if I want to have a doll of good firm and in a good image more cheaply hardly it will turn out. At once buy for 1 000$ I can't. I will save money some time, and then to buy...
If very much it would be desirable.

    6. I'd never pay over $1000 for a doll, that's too much for me. Around $800 is as high as I'd ever go.

    7. If you have the money and are willing to spend it, then obviously it's not too much. Anyone who's done FCS or who is seriously considering it doesn't feel $1K is too much; by the time you've factored in the shopping service and shipping, it's likely to be as much as $1500. Anyone who's prepared to buy a Soom monthly on the marketplace is prepared to fork out anywhere up to $2-$3K. A Juri05 with an Evenstar face-up sold for $5300 back in 2006; a tanned Lishe by Evenstar went for $5100 later that year; evidently those prices weren't too high to whoever bought those dolls.

If you can afford it and that's the doll you want, $1K is not too much. If you don't have the money, then it is. Each person has their own limit they are unwilling to go over. $1K does seem to be a benchmark limit for a lot of people though; I think it's a psychological thing - the moment it hits 4 figures it becomes a firm limit. To others, it simply marks the point at which they think about it a little more carefully.

My most expensive doll is my F22 girl; I paid $900 for her on the MP - however, I'd been prepared to go FCS for her - I was simply fortunate that someone else just didn't bond with the exact configuration of doll I would have ordered; so I saved myself the best part of $600 - but I was willing and prepared to pay the full price. So for me, up to about $1500 is my limit.

    8. When do you feel that a price for a BJD is just way to much?
That really depends on a lot of things. The big factors are how much I love the doll, how limited/rare the doll is, and how much spare cash I have. The more spare cash I have, the more I'm willing to pay for a doll if I really love it. Right now I'd say I'll probably never spend more than $1500 for a doll, and that's for one I really, really love. However, if my savings gets depleted, my max would probably be around $600. If a doll just completely won me over and I won't have another chance to buy it - I might be willing to sell some of my other collectibles in order to purchase it, and go over the $1500 mark. It really just depends on the situation.

I know these dolls are amazing, and beautiful, but is paying over $1000 for a bjd too much in your opinion? Or do you feel this is a reasonable cost?
If you asked me this a month or more ago, I would've said DEFINITELY. A month ago (and before that), I would never consider paying $1000 for a doll. They weren't worth it to me. Back then, I thought that spending even $600 on a doll was stupid. I remember I was looking at dollpa24 lotteries and thought - $1500 for a doll (Williams)?! Who spends that much money on a doll?? ....But now? How I regret not entering that lottery!! :( I am now saving for a Soom MD that will cost me around $1k.... I never expected a doll would be worth that much to me! It's a big surprise. But really, sometimes your perceived value/worth of things can change drastically.

Does it depend on how much you truly love the doll? (that saying, the more the love, the more money you are willing to pay?)

Absolutely. The more I love a doll, the more I'm willing to pay. It also depends on availability/rarity of that doll.

    9. * I know these dolls are amazing, and beautiful, but is paying over $1000 for a bjd too much in your opinion?

Depends on the doll. I paid well over $1k for my Volks SD13 Okita. Then more for a faceup..etc. He was totally worth it to me.

      * Or do you feel this is a reasonable cost?

For me it was. No question.

      * Does it depend on how much you truly love the doll? (that saying, the more the love, the more money you are willing to pay?)

Pretty much. I wanted him so much when he was released. And I couldn't have him.
I did get the Volks SDGr Okita, but I STILL needed the SD13 one, too.

    10. My limit is $ 800 above that I'd be afraid to wield it to take pictures or change the clothes...

    11. For me, dolls over $500 are out of my price range. So unless I get fabulously wealthy, I don't think I would ever pay $1000 for a doll. But for some people this is their only hobby, so I can see that. I just have too many other things to spend money on.

    12. I'd be willing to pay $1000 or so for a dream/grail doll including some fancy extras, such as the lovely bronze Shoshon with antlers and hooves and beautiful eyes that I missed out on. But then, so far Shoshon is the only doll I've found that I'd be willing to spend $1000 on. Maybe a Gentle Akando, too, but he's not going to cost me that much so I'm perfectly happy paying the lesser amount XD
But if it was a regular BJD with no extra parts like hooves or horns or wings, it'd have to be a pretty darn impressive regular BJD.

    13. That's really a very personal question. For some people who have a larger amount of income it might not bother them as much to spend 1K on a doll, yet there are still plenty of wealthier people who still feel 1K is too much. Likewise, I'm willing to bet a large number of people who don't earn tons of extra cash feel that number is too high for them, but there will always be exceptions and people willing to pay any amount for the doll they love. As of right now, I fall into the bracket of not making alot of disposable income and do not feel comfortable spending such high number on one doll. At the moment I think the most I've spent on a basic, nude doll was $650, an even then that was a year ago when I had less obligations than I do now to pay so I doubt I'd spend that much again until my own situation evens out again.

Circumstances are constantly changing as well as the options of layaways (since it's easier for me to stomach paying $120 a month as opposed to $600 all at once and taking a huge chunk out of my bank account), rare opportunities and sudden extra amounts of 'fun money'. So while for now I'd have to say 1K is too much for me to spend on a doll, there's no saying if that will ever change in the future or if I'll always stick to that limit.

    14. Hmm i'll take a crack at this ;p

•I know these dolls are amazing, and beautiful, but is paying over $1000 for a bjd too much in your opinion?

Hmm I think paying close to 3 thousand is to much. but a little over 1k depends. If its a volks limited or a one off or some other companies limited and its very well done thats understandable it would cost so much. But if some1 scalps a four sisters mold to past 1k I say forget that.

•Or do you feel this is a reasonable cost?

Like I said reasonable for some dolls but not other ;p

•Does it depend on how much you truly love the doll? (that saying, the more the love, the more money you are willing to pay?)

Um I would say it does depend how much I truly love the doll. I wouldnt even spend 200 on a doll i didnt care for enough. I think to spend close to 1k you have to be rather sure thats the doll you want and consider all your options before placing that order with the BUY button ^^

    15. Price, being a fabrication of the people, only becomes an issue when needs become replaced with dolls. In otherwords, if you find yourself saying "I need this doll" that's when the price is too much.

    16. well it also depends on weather you can find the same doll used weather you are after the specific face-up that can only be purchased through the company, weather you want the full-set of clothes and wig and eyes through the company, weather its a limited which will only go up in price used when the doll is discontinued, weather its special in some way ((say a doll based of a famous RL person)) etc.

my frist doll i spent around $400 dollars on but recently saw him for sale used for only $180 but i still feel my purchase was worth it cus ive so bonded to my dollie i dont think another could replace him!

    17. I thought so too, i never went past $800 for my dollies...untill Soom released Epidos : /
I think $1000 is not so bad, especially if you layaway it ^^

    18. Heh, I totally did just that, dumping more than $1300 on a Dollmore Lusion. Do I think she costs a lot? I think so, yes. She weighs as much as my EID but costs almost twice as much, so I wonder where most of that price comes from. Do I regret buying her? Of course not! Despite the high price I am completely happy to have her.

Will I pay that much for a doll again? Maaaaaybe, I'm thinking it would be nice to get her another Lusion companion, but that's still a big pile of money to be plonking down for a second, it would depend on my situation I think.

    19. I know these dolls are amazing, and beautiful, but is paying over $1000 for a bjd too much in your opinion?
Really depends on alot of factors. Whether the doll is rare or limited, what does it come with, my income and spare cash at the moment, how much I want the doll. It is all relative. If you are a student with no income, obviously $1000 for a doll may be too much. But one has been working and can comfortably shell out a couple of $1000, then its bearable.

Or do you feel this is a reasonable cost?
At the end of the day, a price tag is just a price tag. Whether or not its a reasonable cost will depend on the value you place on a doll. Put it this way... I find the price tag on BJDs more reasonable than splurging $2000 on a Gucci bag.

Does it depend on how much you truly love the doll? (that saying, the more the love, the more money you are willing to pay?)
Definitely. If I do not love the doll, even $500 is too much. I will rather save and get the doll I truly love.Volks Reisner broke my limit recently at $2900. But I know if Volks Genji (my ultimate love) is re-released, I will try to get him even if it means breaking the Reisner's limit and living on crumbs for a mth or so.

    20. It took me a long time to save and allow myself to purchase my Lusion Dahlia. She's my most expensive doll, and she will likely stay my most expensive doll. Generally I don't allow myself to spend that level of funds on one doll, but her "value" exceeded the money I invested, and it was worth it to me. There are plenty of off-topic dolls I've seen that sell for far more than the crown jewel of my collection, and I'm sure the ones who covet those dolls see the value there, too.
