When is the price just too much?

Nov 23, 2010

    1. I think if you've saved up for a dream doll that costs into the thousands or whatever and aren't putting yourself in debt to get it then you can spend whatever you want. My own personal rule is not to spend over 500 dollars on a doll xD Although one on my list is over 500 with faceup and shipping and another is 499 for JUST the body... But as long as it doesn't say 500 on the page I'm good xD Cheating, I know

    2. I am too lazy to answer questions so I'll just state my opinion.
It depends. Though, everyone know the normal prices such as 200-300$ for nude MSD doll w/o faceup and 400-500$ for nude SD w/o face-up. As for me this is the exactly right price. Though, some companies make limited dolls, special dolls and that is why prices are rising and rising.... An sometimes people buy a regular doll and pay for enormous prices just for the word limited
But when you fell in love with your doll price is really nothing...

    3. Lol, this sounds so much like me. I have this rule that I only buy one doll a year and won't be spending more than $1500 a year on doll related stuff. But, you know... a body is not really a doll and so it is perfectly fine to buy two in one year!

Haven't done it yet, but - ooh, I'm tempted.

    4. This is a moving threshold depending on personal circumstances and also because I live far off in NZ - currency relative to the USD and JPY has a big role to play in this. Over the last 2 years with the USD actually weakening I have increased the threshhold I am prepared to spend in USD but thats the same in NZDs!

    5. Regarding where one draws the spending line, for me it's not always just the dolls. Last year I fell in lust with a dress that cost well over $200.00! :drool But never the less it sold out before my trembling fingers could hit the buy button....whew! :sweat And then there's my on going desire of a particular piece of BJD furniture priced at in the ballpark of $350.00! Jeez! In my more sane moments, I realize that I could get another fullset Realpuki, Pukipuki, or a maybe even a neekid Yo-SD for that much money. But then I find myself gazing hopelessly at said piece of furniture on the company website, painstakingly zooming in on the photo to see all of the details yet again....almost wishing the darned object of my desire would finally sell out like that cursed dress did....so that I could stop torturing myself over it. I mean really, do my resin crew care if they perch their well-sculpted backsides on the heavily marked down doll sized sofas and chairs I've scored for them at Ross, TJ Maxx, and Home Goods? Or will they only find true comfort and real repose upon costly furnishings that can only be procured at great cost from Asia and shipped via pricey EMS?! Hmmmmm....I continue to ponder these question whilst my piggy bank shivers in fear and uncertainty! :apig: LOL!

      Juli DC :)

      • I know these dolls are amazing, and beautiful, but is paying over $1000 for a bjd too much in your opinion?
Actually, I think it is not a lot only if it is your dream doll. If it worth the price, I would get one for sure.

      • Or do you feel this is a reasonable cost?
I think it only make sense if I am buying something I really like for a long time.

      • Does it depend on how much you truly love the doll? (that saying, the more the love, the more money you are willing to pay?)
YES, I would say! I have try everything I can to get the doll I really like.

    6. Initially it was: "one doll per year and no more than $400 on doll + clothes, wigs etc." (I was only collecting MSDs). Soon it became "no more than three dolls per year, no more than $400 each". And then I had to go and stumble on someone's home photo of Soom's Galena. Next was Soom Nephelin...
My spending limit is slightly over $1000 per doll now (naked doll + shipment + 25% taxes >_<"), and I know that I don't really want to go over that amount. As to clothes - if I am _really_ getting a quality item (*coughSODAcough*), I can spend $100-150, perhaps even $200 and not feel guilty about it (especially if I buy myself clothes after that :))

    7. I guess i still haven't decided. i am in love with the Dollmore Lusion which is 1300+ I don't have that kind of money right now but I guess if I ever did I might just succumb. But in all honesty I do think that 1300+ is a lot to pay for a doll. O I am mary quite contrary LoL

    8. I've only spent $645 in total on my actual dolls. I think if all the clothing, wigs, eyes, and everything was counted I've still only spent about $850 on them. My most expencive doll so far has been my Iplehouse JID Vito that I spend $200 on by buying him secondhand. I also only spent $160 on my Planetdoll Tara that came with eyes, clothing, a wig, a custom face-up and full body blushing from a good face-up arist. It's not that I'm not willing to spend more, but that I'm willing to wait for the right doll to come along second hand most of the time. Unless a doll is under $200 new I'd rather get them second hand at a lower price if it's at all possible. I know I can't always do this, but I'll at least wait for the companies to have events so I can get a little more from the deal! I think if you really want a certain doll that you shouldn't let the price tag get in your way, but I also think it's smart to see if there's any alternative way to find it cheaper rather than just buying directly from the company, be it second hand or from a dealer to save on shipping.. or if buying directly from the company to wait until they have some sort of event of some variety.

    9. I used to think like you. $500 was the absolute limit-- then I found my dream-boy, whom was $550. And now, I have another doll on layaway that's $650. Resinsoul/BBB and AoD are at the cheapest end of the spectrum-- but not everyone likes their unrealistic proportions.

I think over 1000$ is my limit, right now.

    10. Well, i have paid 1300USD for my Volks Lieselotte, and i think she is worth it. I would be willing to pay a lot more for limited dolls from the secondhand market.

    11. I guess this depends on a lot of personal things (ie: your income). For some, $200 might seem like a lot, while for others, it's "not bad". That being said, it also depends on how much you are WILLING to spend. While I could afford to go for more than $500, I decided that this was my personal limit. However, if a LE came along that I really wanted, I might go over it. So it will always depend on the doll (and obviously my income). Sometimes it's better to spend a lot than have a lot of regrets --- well, that's just me!

      The "limit" probably always changes.
Really interesting to read all the replies in this thread.

    12. That definitely wasn't what I was trying to say.. :sweat I think that any price is fine for a doll as long as you want it. I'm happy to buy expencive dolls, I just prefer to wait until the company I'm buying from is running some sort of event or buying a doll secondhand to save a little cash and still get the same doll that I want.
All I was saying for price is I won't buy anything over $200 unless the company is running an event that I can get something extra out of. It's not that I won't buy the doll, but that I wait for the perfect time to get it and at least save on shipping or get a wig or some other item out of the deal.
I don't feel the need to wait for a event if the doll is inexpensive to begin with, is all I meant.

    13. I hadn't been tempted by any of the really high price tag dolls until dollshe re-released saint.... which I want with that fabulously poseable body. But $750? Aaaaaargh! I'm discovering anything over 600 seems like too much for me, if it was ANY other doll I'd say "no way, too much". As it is, I don't have the money, but I definately plan to save up, and with clothes and eyes and shipping stupid import taxes.... yeah. Could be over $1,000. But as soon as I get another job I'm doing it anyway.

However, thats because he's a grail doll. And potentially my "last" doll unless something else grabs me by the throat (go away soom, I don't want more dollies!)

    14. I used to have a big collection of mainly fashion dolls and a few Blythes and Pullips that I'd accumulated over a long time. I sold all bar one Blythe to get the money for my first 3 Bjds (well almost enough!) and thought that would be it. I was going to make everything, but a few years down the line I have pretty much managed to buy all my dolly gear (and quite few more dolls) just by doing what I've always done, buying cheap and fixing up then selling on for more than I paid.

That's getting a lot harder to do with the economy the way it is and less people willing to spend on the secondary market and I have to admit I have sometimes allowed myself to dip into work bonuses, and of course Birthday/Xmas money. But pretty much I always buy out of my "doll Fund" so, no, there is no limit to what i would spend on a doll, as long as I really want it and the cash is there in the doll fund. If it isn't I have to look at who I would part with and sell a doll and some outfits to get the latest one I have seen.

I think Mirrin's attitude is admirable but it wouldn't work for me, sadly the ones that catch my eye have always been over $200 even nude and blank. More power to you if you like the more reasonably priced dolls though ;)

Petitefilou: S/He's definitely my last doll... how many times have I heard that phrase roll off my tongue over the years! Tee hee

    15. ...When I ain't got the dough.

Seriously, though....when I can see a high quality doll that is two hundred or MORE less than another high quality doll....it kinda gets to me. Sure, if you've worked your way up to be in high demand, and your dolls are high quality, then go for it. If people will be willing to pay that much (and who am I kidding....we've all shelled out MORE than "plenty" for the dolls we love) then I really can't hate on you, can I? ....But there is a certain company....that I have a certain dream doll in my wishlist from....and I just don't see how they charge so much. I don't see a lot of demand for these dolls. I don't see a lot of owners who OWN these dolls... (and maybe that's because I don't venture out into the community as much as I could. <_< Then again, maybe that's 'cause they charge so damn much for their dolls) and when I was seriously looking into getting this dream doll, I read some awfully frightening stories about the body and the resin quality. So....truthfully, it's up to the consumer to decide for his/herself. But the companies really do need to check themselves, sometimes. <_< In my greedy, doll-lusting opinion.

    16. Well I feel like there are so many beautiful dolls out there that aren't that much money. I mean I feel like most dolls that cost that amount are limited edition+ having limited clothing and faceup work on them. For me, because I do the faceup work and clothing for my dolls myself, I feel like it isn't necessarily worth it. Thats just for me at least.

But I would never judge someone else for paying that much for a doll, its really about what works for that person I guess.

    17. Well, for me there definitely is a cost limit. I mean, I am not one of the hardcore collectors who have up to 50 different dolls and actually spend a lot of money on this hobby. I've nothing against that, I'm just not in that category. But it's not like I'd have a rule, something like 'nothing higher than 400$'. Not at all, if I find some doll that I REALLY like, and it happens to be expensive, I'd patiently save up for it. I guess I still wouldn't go as high as 1000$ : )

    18. I don't question it
      I just accept it
If I like a dol,l I just aim my savings to buy it I guess :)

    19. For 1000+, I'm feeling it is high cost... but still can buy it if it's very special !!

For 2000+ I'm feeling it is very high cost... but many think and many thing before buy. !!!!

For 3000+ No feeling !! It is too much for me @__@!! already !!! XD
