When is the price just too much?

Nov 23, 2010

    1. Well personally, I wouldn´t buy a doll that is over 800 USD (540e). I know these dolls can be beautiful, and you just have to have THE ONE. But I think its not really smart to use way too big amounts of money on a doll (no matter how perfect it is). I also feel, that I am not rich enough to spend that much on a doll, when there are so many other things that I need. But this is just my opinion, if someone wants to spend more money on their dolls I have no problem with that :D

    2. I've set my limit on price around $800 (arbitrary, though). If it were an artist's doll that I just had to have, I think I would be willing to go upwards of $1200, maybe?:sweat I'm primarily interested in smaller, unlimited dolls, so I haven't had to confront the $1000 mark often.

    3. My personal "too much" point seems to have become $500. I've paid that for one doll and was horrified that I'd pay that much, but it was a gorgeous girl that I really wanted. I haven't spent that much since. I've had my eye on one of my grail dolls in the MP that started at $600 and has dropped to $500 but I'm still hesitating. I think the "too much" is simply a personal and financial limitation. No doll is worth 1K to me, but to others maybe so!

    4. Essentially I don't want to pay more than $500 for a blank doll. I am willing to go higher for fullsets, but grudgingly. This means that I have gotten my SDs off the second hand market

    5. I find that most hobbies can be incredibly exspensive, be it kayaking and biking to playing a tabletop miniature war game such as Warhammer or playing Airsoft. The doll hobby (hobbies, i should say) isn't any different in this respect. I think this is just what comes with having a hobby, they are a luxury that we find enjoyable to do.

That said, I don't think i would spend a grande on a blank, wigless, eyeless doll. However if the doll was a limited fullset, that has a whole complete outfit, a beautiful faceup, and comes with eyes and a wig i might consider it, or if it is a huge amount of resin like The Chiron centaur (would still have to be more or less complete though). Actually my grail doll is one such doll that when it was released was approximately a thousand and has since it its release only risen in price to two or three times that.

However in general, i tend to base what i'd be willing to spend based on what i'd be getting. I wouldn't want to spend more than 800 on any one doll at one time. I'd be much less likely to want to spend 800 on a tiny though, but i don't see too many of them going for that price.

    6. i felt $600 dollsr is my limited. i saw one of the doll from fairyland that cost about $900 dollar include the outfit that might be an exception to buy but they are not selling the clothing anymore.

    7. My next goal is a Sard doll. That's probably going to be at least $1000 just for a fix-er-upper. I've seen Beryl go for $2000. However, I only want a couple dolls. Sard might even be the last doll I ever get. So I don't think it's too expensive. I'd rather buy one of him than five other dolls.

    8. I've always thought that $1000 is a crazy price for BJD! However, I recently decided to pay $1580 for a grail doll. I didn't buy her for this reason. I just fell in love with her face and I knew that if I am to have only ONE Volks SD in my collection then it has to be HER! It will take months to pay her off but I know she was worth it :)

    9. $700 is my limit..it doesn't matter how limited and rare a doll is. Most dolls cost that much are very good and I have seen a lot of nice dolls at that price range :3

    10. I think it is depend on situation. Personally, i think cost $1000 or more is okay if only i like the sculpt deeply.but,it depend on the fact that the money is "my money ", not my parent's .In my eyes , people can spend money no matter how much for their hobby.but,it is unfeasible to pursue the expensive hobby when you can't afford it.

    11. I only buy blank dolls, so my limit is definitely $500 - not including shipping. Dolls always cost a fair amount to ship... But... Well, at least I'm saving money by buying things in US$ at the moment. :D

    12. My brain would assure in logic terms it should be when quality is not enough for the price I am going to pay, but at heart for me the price of a BJD I really want is just too much when no matter how hard I try, I will not be able to afford it, something that fortunately has never happened to me, at least yet.

    13. It depends on the rarity of the doll, and the passion of one's avarice to own it. I judge "price too much" on other criteria -- namely when the person is pricing the doll not only with a profit margin (which might be okay, depending on the above), but also state that they're looking to recover their original shipping cost -- and then charge you additional shipping PLUS paypal fees.

It may be my personal quirk, but I believe if I wanted a doll enough to order from the company, then the original EMS shipping is my personal responsibility and the cost to have had my craving satisfied. If I change my mind later, well, tough on me. Otherwise, it's as if when you're selling your car, you're also trying to make back all you laid out for gas while using it!

    14. Personally, for me, I've got two tiers when it comes to 'too much'.

For me, $750 (before shipping) is too darn much for a standard blank doll - meaning no faceup, wig, etc. If I'm paying that much, I had best at least be getting something out of it (at LEAST a faceup for crying out loud!). I'm willing to adjust this a bit if it's the perfect mold of a LE doll though.

Now, for special or Limited Release dolls, it depends entirely on the doll, availability, and price. For example, for my grail doll (Cecile the Scar-face, Ocean of Deep Black) I would willingly pay upwards of $2500 for the doll, but not over $3500. Even then, I would have to have all my bills, etc. taken care of first. For Reisner, I'd go a bit lower than Cecile but still not lower than $2500.

If it came to (Science forbid) ever having to replace my Spirit Doll Dark, on the other hand, I would go to whatever lengths were necessary to replace him, simply because I love him, his character, and he's perfect to me. However, on the same note, I wouldn't pay more than $500 if it came to replacing my Illusion Spirit Cantarira because, while I love him, he didn't cost that much to begin with and I had to sell his body as it was because it was too small for his head.

So, on average $700 for a blank is too much to me, and with LE/Grail Dolls its variable.

    15. Sard was one of my grails too, my friend showed me him in the flesh, paid $2000. Thats the same price I am paying xD. I guess if I really want a doll.....I will be willing to pay.

    16. I can understand if somebody is spending up to $ 2000.00 for a very special doll ... and has lots more than only one. But then you may not have any other expensive hobbies. As I´m a crafter of many various crafts, I DO HAVE another expensive hobby. So I MUST make my choice. And I did: I have only two more dolls I want to get some day - one of these is a Bery Succubus but I guess, this will stay a dream, as I am not able/willing to pay $ 2000.00 for a doll.
My other goal is a UH21 head (cute!!!!!) ... I hope this will be easier to reach ... it´s a head only! I have no idea what this will cost. I just spent $ 1000.00 incl. shipping for my first two dolls. I think after I get the UH21 head one day ... I´m done.

Although ... there are sooooooo many other beauties ... who knows....*smile*

    17. The price is too much if I don't like the sculpt enough to justify paying that price for it.

There are MANY dolls that I like. But I don't want to fork over any money to enjoy them. Surprise surprise: I won't be owning any of them! So I'll have to get my fix through other owners' photos -- and that satisfies me good enough. I guess I didn't like these dolls so much after all, huh?

There are other dolls that I like, and I pause over them every time I see them in the MP or the company website. But the price is never low enough, and my desire isn't great enough that I actually want to press the "Buy" button and fork over my hard-earned money for that piece of resin. Well then, I guess I don't like these dolls as much either. So I'll just move on and won't lose sleep over it.

That's why I still don't have a tiny Soom MD, even though I think they're adorable. I'm sure one day though, I will press that "Buy" and bring home a Teenie Gem...

    18. Well, I think U$300 is already an expensive price to pay on a doll (assuming I pay my dolls with my own money, from my hardwork, not my parent's money), and I paid more then that in 3 of the four dolls I got. XD
But I really like the sculpts and 2 of them were limited. I think you must really, REALLY love a doll to get it.

But... even if you love, I think more than U$1000 is just not right. It's too much for me, doesn't matter what doll it is and how much I want it.

    19. This, for me, is a dealbreaker too. Especially if someone wants you to cover for the custom charges he/she had to pay. I'm not responsible for the extra costs a seller had to take into consideration when she first bought that doll. I'm not asking somebody else to pay for my expenses and I don't want people to ask ME.

    20. $1000 actually isn't a deal breaker for me personally if the doll is an SD size. I'm willing to pay about $650ish for a blank doll (....Fairyland, Iplehouse, I'm looking at you.) and then after shipping, wigs, eyes, clothes, faceup, etc and shipping for all those things...it adds up to be around $1000 depending on how much you spend on the rest. Plus, the fact that I could always re-sell for around what I paid is a comforting thought. I wouldn't be able to spend that much on something that in the end I might not like.

After the bills are paid, who cares what I do with my money? I'm using it on something I love and enjoy, which life is meant for.
