When is the price just too much?

Nov 23, 2010

    1. My limit is 800 and thats only because my grail doll is near that price.

I know people who have spent nearly 2000 on a doll and then hated it once they got it. Now its almost 2yrs they have been trying to sell it with no luck. I wouldnt risk it if it were me. But everyone is different.

I even have a limit to how many dolls I want which is 12. Dont go out there and spend like crazy friends it will hurt you wallet lol

    2. I know these dolls are amazing, and beautiful, but is paying over $1000 for a bjd too much in your opinion? For me? No. If it is a rare, sought after sculpt and I want it, and have the means to get it, I will. My grail doll is a Dollshe Bermann, which will set me back several thousand. Will I ever get him? Maybe not. But if the opportunity was given to me, and I have the means to take it, I would.

Or do you feel this is a reasonable cost? Again, depends. If the sculpt is rare enough 1 grand could be a good price.

Does it depend on how much you truly love the doll? (that saying, the more the love, the more money you are willing to pay?) Yes. If I love the doll and want it that much, the more money I may be willing to pay.

    3. I brought a fullset Volks SD13 for just a little over 1000$ I thought that was worth it because he was a fullset and practically new at the time.

Then I bought one of my grail dolls, for the same amount. He didn't come with any extras, (no clothing, no wig, no eyes) and he didn't even match the body that he was on. resin-colorwise.
But he was a virtually unmodded dreaming head from a time in where his brothers where getting their eyes modded open. very rare, so I didn't mind his price so much knowing how rare he was. He's still the grail that I had been questing for.

Nowadays, since my doll family is mostly complete I am hunting for a few dolls that will finish my doll family. but I don't think that I will pay over 1000$ again for my dolls.

....Unless I happen to see one that I've fallen in love with. ;)

    4. $1200 is probably my limit. I paid that just once, for a pretty sought-after Volks limited. There are a couple more I'd be willing to pay that for, if I have the funds at the time.

    5. I like this answer. XD

      • I know these dolls are amazing, and beautiful, but is paying over $1000 for a bjd too much in your opinion?
Personally no. The question of "too much" is totally subjective for me. I think there are many people who gain a great deal of joy, peace and happiness from collecting and there's no price tag on that.

      • Or do you feel this is a reasonable cost?
I would say that reasonable is defined by individual mindset/perspective and financial ability. For me $1,000 is reasonable but it doesn't mean I will or want to spend that much.

      • Does it depend on how much you truly love the doll? (that saying, the more the love, the more money you are willing to pay?)
Sort of but not really. For me it all goes back to whether or not I can afford the doll at the time, is it limited, is it special enough for me. I'm also at the point where I really don't want more dolls - so even if I loved it and it was $1,000+; I still don't know that I would buy it. I see dolls all the time that are less than $200 and I "love" them but I'm not buying those either.

    6. I once saw a doll with a price of $20,000. Now I'm 99.9% sure that is was a mistake and it was supposed to be $2000, but either way I wouldn't pay that much for a doll. The dolls I want right now are about $370, now although I think that it's a little high I am very will to pay it considering this is a trusted company and it's one of the cheaper dolls. I think around $500 is my limit...there is just no way I would fork over $1000+ for a doll. Even if it was perfect.

    7. The price is too much when I feel like the doll isn't worth it. This monetary value changes depending on my situation (job, school, etc). I imagine that after I graduate and get an "adult" job with "real" money, my doll budget will probably go up, but for right now I can't even fathom spending more than $500 on a doll, much less $1000+.

    8. Everyone's personal opinion is gonna be different about this. I'd never tell other people what they can and can't spend their money on, it's their hobby after all!
If we just look at what other (expensive) hobbies are out there... my father collects stamps and he doesn't do anything with them even though he's retired! He buys them and then puts them into boxes never to look at them again!........... Lots of people collect figurines or antiques or other such things that are not cheap and 'only stand around and look nice'. However much money one person wants to spend on that is their business and if a doll is worth thousands of dollars to them, and that's how it is!

I personally would pay 1000+ dollars too... if it were a doll I'd always wanted and such... and given I had the money. If I thought it'd make me happy then why not (too bad I don't have that money to throw around anyways! haha)

    9. Depends on the doll. I paid around three thousand for my Dollmore Trinity Lumie. But she's a limited sculpt, came with a full outfit and wig and eyes and such, and she is the size of a small child (I paid extra to have her seams sanded, too). She is one of my favorite dolls now, so she was definitely worth the money. I would NEVER spend that much on a doll half her size, though, no matter how much I loved the sculpt or how limited it was.

So, if I feel the doll is worth it, I don't mind spending that much money on one.

    10. I think the only way a doll is worth more than $1000 is if it is a fullset, limited doll. Or a really intricate kind of BJD that took lots of time to sculpt than the average BJD, like a fantasy doll that has a bunch of detailed hoofs, antlers, etc and comes with human legs/parts as well. Usually that's the only time I would ever consider buying a doll that is $1000. But I have not done so yet since I cannot afford to do that right now. Also, for me, it doesn't really matter how much I love the doll. I think more on the side of reason and think about if I really can live without the doll or live with the consequences of me spending that much money for it. Which I always find the right answer. I can restrain myself when I know something is too expensive for me to afford. I can wait and save. (:

    11. I would actually never buy a doll that is over 500. Even if I love it, I'd never do it. It's just too high of a cost to me.

    12. I couldn't pay anymore than $1000 for a doll I would think its worth it but I couldn't bring myself to pay it :)

    13. I nearly complete my doll collection, so I won't spend money after this which makes me feel happier. These past 2 years I've spent so much money on this hobby and the most expensive doll was around 800 $ for his head. He was limited and my number 1 dream doll, so didn't feel bad after buying him and will plan for his body later. So his total max. price would be around 1400 $. Only this one I'll spend this much. For other dolls is 800 $ at most.

    14. I don't want a doll more than $700. I draw my line there because all the SDs I like are about $4-600, but I refuse to do more than that based on the principle. It just feels like I'd be so afraid to touch them or play with them if they were more than that.

I do seriously consider and reconsider if it's more than $400 anyway.

    15. No, $1,000 is not too much in my opinion. It's pretty easy for SDs to approach the $1,000 mark if you're including the cost of clothes and accessories! Most of my dolls were around the $600-800 mark (just the nude, blank doll), but several of my LE Sooms were far above that because they were fullsets. It just depends on the sculpt and how much I like it. If I like it more I'm willing to pay more. My grail cost me the most, and I never once regretted that purchase! :)

    16. When I first started this hobby one of the first dolls I wanted was a Black Cat Lucas from Volks which at the time was in about the $950ish area. I couldn't even IMAGINE paying that much for a doll. I told myself I would never pay over $500 for a sculpt...

8 years later I've owned more than a few dolls over $500, and at least 4 that exceeded the $1,000 mark. Some of them I've regretted and some I haven't. My Tsuyoshi Maki for example, I actually sold and bought back and sold a second time because I actually regretted buying him back more than I regretted having sold him in the first place. Where as my girlfriend's SD16 Olivia we've had for about 6 years now and have never once thought about selling her. So to me she's been worth every penny while others maybe haven't been.

It just depends on the doll, and my own financial situation at the time really. Some dolls I've come to learn weren't such a "must have" but I've only realized it much further down the road when I realize I would rather have the extra cash than that particular doll, I think that's when I feel like a doll has cost "too much" more than a specific price tag.

    17. I usually set limits to my bjd wants, roughly usd$1k. The only times I exceeded the limit so far are with my OE Bermann, Volks Kurumi and Dollmore trinity Lumie. All are above USD2k but to me it is all worth it. I won't go extremes (usd$10k or more).

Volks Kurumi (the 1st release) full set, loved every single thing about her. Must get at all cost, broke the usd1k limit. She is just so lovely and I adore her immensely that I got another nude Kurumi via YJ. Kurumi twins :) whenever I see them, I just smile and feel better about my day. Love them so much.

I know some would call me silly to go back to old resin/sculpts (like with the Bermann) but this has been a journey for me to attain him. From the time he was being released and me being a Uni student, I was unable to truly afford him and brush him off as unattainable. To have an opportunity to get him is hard to find. I grabbed the opportunity with no hesitation and to date, he is one of my BJD "milestones". Worth every single penny to splurge and no guilt to this date.

Dollmore Trinity Lumie- I haven't got her but this huge girl is a novelty for me. I don't know if I will like her but she is the biggest doll I will ever have. I was attracted to lusions but their bodies aren't my thing. I am worried she might be too big for me , but will see when she arrives...I was abit careful with her purchase and did layaway so that it felt like it wasn't a big chunk of money to fork up for. Self-deception ...

I have bought cheaper and newer dolls but don't see the quality or monetary value in them... So what is in a price? As long it does not jeopardize your daily living needs and you do not need to use credit to buy dolls. Dolls are supposed to be fun, not soul consuming...

    18. >I know these dolls are amazing, and beautiful, but is paying over $1000 for a bjd too much in your opinion?
For a blank doll, definitely. I would never buy a blank one over $800, no exceptions.

      >Or do you feel this is a reasonable cost?
If it were a fullset/came with extras, a few hundred over $1000 sounds reasonable to me.

      >Does it depend on how much you truly love the doll? (that saying, the more the love, the more money you are willing to pay?)
No. Loving a doll would only mean I'd consider buying it. If I can't get it at a price I think is reasonable, then I'll have to content myself with looking at pictures :'/

      • I know these dolls are amazing, and beautiful, but is paying over $1000 for a bjd too much in your opinion?

I think i would spend the money (if I had it) on a fullset of the doll I really want, but only if it's the price of the company. I would not buy a 700$ doll on the marketplace for like double the price....cause that does not support the company nor do I want to support the seller with my money. It's okay to raise the price a little if it's a limited doll, but for me it's not worth it to spend much more than the original price.

      • Or do you feel this is a reasonable cost?

Could be...could not be.. I never bought such an expensive doll >D
my most expensive ones are my custom made minimees which were like 500$ komplete.

      • Does it depend on how much you truly love the doll? (that saying, the more the love, the more money you are willing to pay?)

yes, I think it does. But on the other hand. Do I know this right up front? I mean, if I think the doll is amazing and great and whatever, maybe I still don't like it when I am holding it in my hands.
