When It Comes To BJD's What Makes You Fussy?

Mar 5, 2015

    1. The shape of the nose more often than not decides how interested I am in a doll. Dolls showing teeth tend to make me avert my eyes as well.

    2. I guess it is being fussy since I always look at the mouth first. I dont like open mouth BJDs just because. I dont know I just dont like them. haha!

    3. Dolls that are posed so you can see into the joint socket. And dolls that collapse at the knees or flop over at the hips. Also seconding what beatnik says about poorly sculpted hands.

    4. When their eyes just stare off into nowhere. The look so bored! >w<

    5. I personally don't mind dolls bodies with big breasts, and even have a few dolls with relatively large breasts. However, my Souldouble girl's breasts bug me, because the character she is supposed to be does not have breasts that big. Mom tells me I'm being ridiculous when I talk about maybe having someone mod her breasts to be smaller, saying I'm obsessed with breasts, but... it's not really breasts in general, just that these don't fit the character she's supposed to be.

    6. joints and muscular bodies. i get really annoyed when the visible joints on a doll are ugly or very badly sculpted. muscular bodies that are overly muscular but very lean also bug me because it looks sooooo unnatural.

    7. I find myself becoming more and more fussy about how well a doll poses. It rather annoys me when I try to pose a doll and he/she won't cooperate. The more easily a doll poses, the more I enjoy playing with her/him.

    8. As for my personal dolls? I am very picky about a lot of things.
Mostly I am very picking about my dolls faceups. I do them myself, so if I feel like I can do better or have a different vision. I simply wipe and redo. I feel like I have to keep them up to my personal perfectionist standard, haha.

I am also very picky about my clothing/wigs. I have to have everything match or else it will drive me up the wall. My dolls aren't characters until I start imagining what they would look nice in and eventually go with the flow. I am not the best at sewing, as it tends to be one of my weaker points. So I end up buying a lot of nice clothing from Etsy for them.

As for sculpts and what keeps me from buying a doll? I have found more recently that I am very picky of the dolls body and eye shape. That and I have been wanting to get uncommon doll sculpts recently.

    9. The size of the eyes compared to other facial features eg lips or nose. If the eye holes are huge so the face is off-balance, I'm instantly put off >.<

    10. Overly protruding lips. As popular and common as they are, I don't really like them.

    11. I get frustrated when I can't find a particular sculpt I'd fall in love with. I'm extremely picky.

    12. I've recently realized that I am not fond of most of the dolls that have teeth. I've thought a few were cute, but it just wasn't a doll I wanted.

    13. Eye positioning.. I'm so picky with eye positions that I usually just end up having my dolls look straight. Something always seems off when I put the eyes left or right.

    14. In regards to picking sculpts, I'm fussy when it comes to pouty lips or the size and positioning of the eyes. Not a fan of big eyes because I feel it gives the face a bug-like appearance.

    15. For me it's the joints and the sculpting of the back. I hate the long knee joint that the souldoll double boy used to come with.

    16. I'm not fussy per se but I fear I'm a bit of a perfectionist.

I'll never buy a doll that can't pose like a professional no matter how beautiful he or she is. Posing is so important to me that it causes me to lose out on a lot of beautiful sculpts. Any tips on how to get rid of this quirk? x__x I have other minor annoyances but these are usually about their wig and eyes, most of them are already mentioned here.

    17. When it comes to my dolls, I am "fussy" about everything. I expect clothing, eyes, wigs, shoes, etc. to both aesthetically please me and be of a quality that I can appreciate. I am quick to remove/replace things that don't meet the standards I had in mind. I've bought a few outfits, wigs, and eyes that arrived where I took one look at them and moved them to my "will sell or give away" pile. I don't like "settling."

    18. Names, dolls that look too 'anime' (Volks, I'm looking at you, sizing and wigs are my main ones... Finding a wig for Fable has been a year-long nightmare, and it's taken me months to settle on a sculpt to save up for my fossegrim.

    19. Hands. I am so picky about hands for my dolls! My most recent guy to come home had undetailed, awkwardly sculpted hands, and it nearly made me cry. Lucky I had some spares that I didn't hate in the bits box.

That's really my only bugaboo. ^-^

    20. Oh man, reading over this list makes me realize I'm fussy about quite a few things when it comes to my dolls. *_*

Like others have said: fork-hands, bug-eyes and the baby face/boobalicious bod are big no-no's. Same with baby face/six-pack adult body. I'm also very picky about male sculpts in general - they have to look manly, and no noses so scooped that I could ski off them! Old CP sculpts are particularly notorious about the ski slope noses (I am told, anyway. I wasn't in the hobby during the time CP was 'the thing'). Unless the doll is a Dollfie Dream/Obitsu (anime-esque dolls) then I want them to have smaller eyes. Anything larger than 16mm is too big!

I really loved Volks School D in photos but in person, the eyes were just huge and it has a slight ski-slope nose that I couldn't see in photos. I had to sell the head immediately. I think that head takes either 18mm or 20mm eyes, which I thought I could handle. Nope!
