When It Comes To BJD's What Makes You Fussy?

Mar 5, 2015

    1. I'm an artist so I'm really picky about anatomy and artistic quality. Quirks like a real human would have are great (I don't like dolls that are too cookie-cutter perfect because they all look the same to me) but if it looks poorly sculpted then It's a nope. Especially with the body. I'm also picky about the sleekness of joints and how well they fit together.

    2. I'm really picky about nipples.

I don't know why it matters as my dolls are clothed 90% of the time, but oh my god, nipples. I've literally changed my mind on dolls because I thought the nipples were weird for some reason or another.

Youngster/baby-fat faces on bodies with six-packs just confuses me like heck! It's also been driving me crazy because I feel like it used to be a lot easier to get a doll with a flat stomach and now it's like "OKAY WHO DOESN'T HAVE SIX-PACK ABS. My character doesn't lift! His hobbies are napping on the job!"

.....Well, I don't like six-pack abs on anyone, the more chocolate bar/ice cube tray they look, the more I hate it. I'm like half ready to smooth them off some of the dolls I have. But it just looks double weird to me when some companies make dolls that look like a ten-year-old and then it's got six pack abs and a super mature body.

    3. They don't creep me out as much as they make me feel sick on the inside. I don't mean its "repulsive", but I really do feel so droopy and sickly just looking at them. I do not like >_<

Everything you just said. So much of it.
Nipples. Headlights are NOT attractive tyvm xD So why would you want them to show through perfectly pretty clothing and ruin the entire thing? Only thing I hate more than doll nipples are people who would act all defensive and hostile towards the idea of sanding them, saying "Get over yourself, they're just nipples, they're natural herp de derp". By sanding them I'm not worried about the "sexualization" part of them -_- They just do not look good at all.

Same goes for doll penises. Has nothing to do with the sexual aspect of it (Does it even?) but more of a weird icky addition I do not like to see. I don't know, it feels weird and makes me uncomfortable :X It's like the doll is flashing me, and I do not approve lol  ESPECIALLY when its a child doll and there's the little thingamabob sticking out. Nope.

    4. I have never sanded nipples, but yeah the problem is that a hard resin doll's nipples arenโ€™t gonna squish down so it can be very AAARRRGGGHHH sometimes. The worst was maybe the fantasydoll body I used to have. Nipples like flippin' buttons! I like realistic nipples, but they definitely can't be too at attention or it will look annoying under clothes.

I donโ€™t really mind doll penises at a deal-breaker level, but I do appreciate well-sculpted wee. Hahahaha. If you're gonna do it, gotta do it right. But I have been thinking about sanding off or covering with epoxy the penis on my dragon baby doll because it is a kid and reptiles have internal genitalia anyway.

    5. My biggest one is probably anime sculpts or less realistic sculpts. I don't think I could ever go for something like Volks or DOD. They're way too anime-fied for my taste. Gimme those realistic dolls.

Someone earlier was talking about cookie cutter dolls and I agree. It's pretty much why I don't like anime sculpts because they all look way too similar or just scoot along the anime tropes too perfectly like tsundere, shy, or feisty anime girl. Then the guys are just bishis.

Another one is the big busty woman with a child's head. A lot of people in the art community do that thing, too and it's always put me off. I dislike it for a different reason than other people, though. It's not really the fact that it's supposed to look like a kid that bothers me (loli doesn't bother me). My reasoning ties into my first point. It's just not realistic...at all. There's a way to tastefully do it so that the anatomy isn't jacked up.

CLOTHES. It's so hard to find clothes for my dolls! For my most recent one I just ended up commissioning for an outfit because it's nearly impossible to find clothes that aren't just black on black on white on black. I have a character design in mind, dammit!

Something else I can't stand is mohair style. I got one for myself to see what all the buzz was about, but, god, I realized why the majority of people's are styled the exact same way. There's not much you can do with them the way most of them are made!

    6. Wigs that don't look like they're part of the doll, I get this way with most short fur wigs. It makes me cringe.

    7. Reading through this thread made me realize I'm not a fussy collector. At all.
The only thing I fuss over is resin match. I absolutely hate buying heads separately then go body hunting for them. If the head is older, it makes the job harder, yellowing and all. And unless the head and the body matches almost perfectly, I'll never be happy with that doll.

    8. I hate dirty dolls and unprofessional face up on expensive doll heads. Whenever I see an expensive doll heads along with "FIRST FACE UP ATTEMPT" I couldn't help but feel sorry for the doll. Just my opinion.

    9. I am particular about anatomy and smooth, rounded jointing. If a doll has blatant Peanut style double jointing that's usually a deal breaker for me.

    10. ...Outie belly-buttons. When I got my serenade doll, I was like, " Wooo! So perfec...EH? Ew. Wtf?" And promptly pulled out my trusty Dremel. Granted, it wasn't like insanely bulgy, but it was there and just personal preference here, but I don't really like the look of outies.

    11. I'm super fussy about my dolls' wigs (and to some extent others' doll's wigs...). They have to be brushed just right and stick out just the right way, which is fine for my two boys with fur wigs, since they're short and easy to manipulate. My satyr boy, on the other hand, has a synthetic wig all the way down to his feet. It takes me like 57365329 years to get his wig how I like it in pictures or on display.

    12. One of the few things that I don't like is a bad faceup on a doll. It's amazing what a great faceup can do for a cheaper doll so it's sad to see a doll with a bad faceup.

    13. I'm really fussy when it comes to aspects of clothing being out of scale such as buttons and shoelaces.

I just got some jeans for my 1/4 scale guy, and the belt loops are way too big. It's driving me crazy. Well, that and the fact that they're also too short. I really need to get him another pair of pants.

    14. I read Kayka's reply and completely agree. It is so annoying when a piece of clothing does not fit right or doesn't look in-scale with the doll. I had a shirt for my DS Saint and the collar on it was way too big for his face and I had to get him a new one.

    15. For my dolls:
Dark resin colors that are over the top on price. I'm going to shoot myself if I have to pay again another $100 extra for variety. I love different resin colors and I have dolls from companies that did not charge me for the resin color and are amazing.

Marbling on resin color. Another thing I hate about buying different resin colors, and a reason why I would never buy a tan fairy land doll. I hate Marbling a lot, I'm okay with seamlines, that's fine, but for me marbling just shows a lack of knowledge of the product and lack of effort, if I have color bjd that have smooth and beautiful resin from other companies then I don't understand why some can't try just as hard.

Eyes that are not positioned right or wrong size. My lillycat has this issue as she doesn't have heavy lids and her eyes are a bit wider on the top, it is very hard to position her eyes correctly so she doesn't look petrified.

Accessories. Idk why but they annoy me when they don't have enough accessories lol

For dolls in general even if they are not mine:
Clothing and wigs. If you are going to spend so much money on a doll then for the love of god at least buy them clothes that are not from people that are trying to rip you off. I'm not talking about people that are learning how to sew and practicing, I'm talking about clothes that you can tell were bought and are terrible, yet people got them because they were either super cheap or have no knowledge of the type of clothing they are buying, in which case I feel sorry for them.

Wigs, even cheap wigs can look good if you brush them and style them, but just slapping the wig on and having it look like the worst bed head in the planet is just something that annoys the living crap out of me, it takes literally five minutes to style a wig, and you don't need fancy tools. I don't get why people don't at least try with it.

    16. Wow this is hard! I'm actually racking my brain trying to figure out what I dislike lol.

I think my pet peeve is messy dolls in general?? Like the dolls you see mistreated and horribly taken care of :p gets me upset
I like all types of dolls and styles, surprisingly!

    17. (For my answer I'm interpreting this question as being about actual features of dolls as made by the company, not what peeves us in other people's photos.) I can't deal with dolls that have noodle-shaped arms >___> especially if the rest of the body is featured, and then the arms are just Adventure-Time-lookin' tubules that make me think the doll is about to do a wacky waving inflatable arm man impression. I don't mean the arms have to be muscular, just arm-shaped. Even the most willowy doll in my collection, who is on a Volks DD2 body, has some shape to her arms, as in them being narrower or wider at certain points along their length/thinning near her wrist etc -- it's not that they're muscular, more that she just appears to possess a musculoskeletal system at all. This is pretty much the only thing that makes me sad about my old-body Soom Mini Gem, her arms are very close to being just cylinders, but since she's on such a tiny scale (her arms are the thickness of penciles) and always clothed I can overlook it.

"My character doesn't lift" lol, agree! Why've so many boy dolls gotta be shredded?! I'm a little more forgiving of nipnops, though, as I've found I can smooth some putty over them to make them no longer poke through the clothes. Penises on the other hand..I have yet to think of a solution to the way they look when my male dolls are wearing tights, since they obviously aren't going to squish down or tuck away :I I'm just resigned to layering over the area with the rest of the guy's clothes, which is too bad when I want a silhouette that wouldn't otherwise involve that!

    18. Ooh there are so many things already mentioned that I agree with~ :XD:
I'm usually fussy about the doll itself and not wigs, eyes or clothes - same with faceup and blushing since all of those can be changed. Gladly I'm not too picky with small details. :) I look the overall design of the doll which is joints, body and head.
I know that blushing can make simple looking unpainted hands/feet look damn nice. :kitty1
Same thing with a good faceup on a head sculpt that may look boring to you.

    19. I didn't realize how many pet peeves I had until I started reading this thread!

      -huge boobs
-mature bodies with sweet little baby faces
-fur wigs, I just hate them
-human hair wigs creep me out
-face ups that look like they were done with magic marker
-hands where the fingers are all stuck together with no separation at all
-photo stories with dolls with out face ups
      -overly built male bodies
-dolls without shoes when otherwise dressed nicely in photos
-bad resin matches on hybrids or amounts of yellowing
      -dolls with too small heads
-eyes that are too big or too small (some white should show, but they shouldn't look terrified)
-when a doll's wig clashes with their outfit in a photo
-when owners get a doll and leave it without clothes, face ups, wigs, and shoes for ages, and posts tons of photos

    20. 1. Noses, so fussy about noses. Sometimes I've brought heads and then sold them right away cause I just *can't* get past the shape of noses...

      2. Over simplified bodies, hands, feet. Think out of the 3 the hands are the most picky for me, I don't really care about possibility in my dolls. Long as they can stand/ sit and move their hands/ feet/ heads but when hands are ugly or poorly sculpted. Bah!

      3. Strangely proportioned head to body ratio.
