1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

When people tell you your dolls are a waste of money...

Jan 18, 2016

    1. If anyone I know ever tries to tell me (ever again, because it's happened before) that my dolls are a waste of money, I'll tell them that their words are a waste of time. :)

And they'll be giant hypocrites, besides, because every single one of them spends their own money at least as frivolously as I do (or ever did).

A few in particular even neglect personal responsibility in the process.

Usually, the person doing the finger-pointing needs the lesson the most.

    2. @ashiya is correct. BJDs aren't fragile, unless you count their fingers. Those may be fragile, if you drop them. Resin is pretty sturdy. :3nodding:

    3. @Ryuichi Sakuma 13 oh really? I don't remember if I ever really tried to hug mine, but good to know! :XD:

To me it sounds a lot better as an argument for having bjds than "so hey I spent $$$ on a virtual game website ", come to think of it, the ones I'm thinking of have pixel dolls for you to dress up with pixel clothes lol

    4. I have many hobbies, from collecting art books to collecting figures, and bjds I felt were in the same mix as well.

    5. I have mostly SDs and larger, so I have hugged and even napped with them to help me bond with them. Its nice that resin warms up to the touch. :kitty1

Its cool to belong to a hobby where you can actually touch the things you collect! So many people collect art that sits behind glass, or books full of pictures of things that can't be touched. I do collect some virtual things, such as pokemon, but there is something wonderful about being in a hobby where you can not only touch, but play with your art collectables. :love

I think this is a great hobby, one where you can modify the dolls to look like your dreams.

    6. @Ryuichi Sakuma 13 Yes, taking pictures is much more fun to pose them than, for example, a static anime figure. Finding and making clothes for them, and customizing, is like having a bunch of different hobbies. And they feel like they're really there and are not just a statue frozen in time.
I think that's a good argument for collecting bjds ^^ But I still prefer to avoid the topic with my father xD

    7. Honestly I saw someone drop 1k on some computer parts without checking the actual price, quality, etc, and then the harddrive failed and person basically bought all the same stuff again. Sooooo... wasting money isn't really a doll thing in my opinion.

Bottom line: If you don't research you're probably gonna waste money anyway, and plan for that. If you can budget and research the dolls on your own, you good fam. Good luck, good dolls, have fun!

    8. Maybe I'm too afraid to ruin their faceup and wig positioning. It gives you a sense of insecurity.

    9. I use velcro on my dolls' wigs, a tab on their headcaps, and sew it onto their wigs in the position I want it to sit on. And I don't touch their faces when I hug them.

      But I get it. :3nodding:

    10. It makes me laugh when people say such things. If it had been such a terrible waste I wouldn't have been setting my wallet on fire for the past 12 years, willingly and knowingly, with no regrets what so ever. I always tell them off, compare it with other expensive hobbies or activities, how that is also a waste of money, but it being none of my business what other people spend their money on.

    11. I once showed my husband Cuarto's massive dragon and told him to guess how much he was. He said "I dunno, $300?" i'm like add a zero my dude and he was absolutely floored.
.....little does he know the dolls sitting on my desk have a collective value of about $3000
I'm worried about what he'd say if he did although he's not judgemental of me or anything. The bottom line is they make me happy, so i'm doing it.

    12. I just laugh. Many of my friends are hobby photographers, which is also really expensive. So I just remind them that I’m not alone in an expensive hobby. Also, I use money I wouldn’t use otherwise. I have the same method for tattoo and doll money saving, actually. I just save coins. I currently am working towards a ResinSoul 60cm girl body, for $160. I have $90 saved up in spare change! I did this for my first tattoo, too. I’ve always been a cash spender, so I just save all my coins for fun things.

    13. im terrible with money, but i have no problems trying to save or put something on layaway. If dolls give me some happiness, and as long as my bills are paid who cares? Ive always loved dolls... had so many brats as a kid. The only people who have ever gave me stink about it are the men in my life and they all smoke and drink and their idea of fun is sitting at the pub drinking away their money.

    14. Honestly, I try not to mention the price of my dolls because I think people would be shocked. I know I was when I first discovered what they cost. Until you learn about BJDs you don't realise what goes into creating one, especially if you're buying from small, indie companies where there could only be one or two people working on a doll.

I'm not interested in being told I'm wasting money. Following that rationale most purchases outside of necessities are "a waste". I have a job and savings and there are plenty of 'essential' things others buy that I have never have (like a TV or a car).

    15. Almost every hobby will look like frivolous spending to outsiders. Whether I spend €1000,- on dolls, medieval musical instruments, tattoos, or art supplies, there will always be someone that thinks it's too much. And I myself would frown a little if someone'd mention spending that much on, eh, sports gear or something, just because that wouldn't be worth it to me.

Whether something is a waste is more a function of your total income, your enthusiasm for the hobby, the usual prices in that hobby, and the money you actually spend on it. I've learned to be economic (student's budget y'all) and still participate in hobbies that are traditionally crazy expensive, but I'm willing to spend more on the hobbies I care about more. If someone considers that wasting money, well. I'm buying things that allow me to do activities I enjoy, I don't think a better justification than that is needed :P

    17. OI! I'm a boy (man, actually) and I play with dolls! She's dead wrong saying that! >: P

    18. I'm currently saving to buy a house, so my family has scoffed pretty hard and voiced rather often "that's a pretty expensive hobby" as if I didn't already know and it really grinds my gears because they don't pay my bills, they don't put money into my savings account, they don't pay off my credit card, and they don't put money in my doll savings account. Its none of their business how I spend my money, and if they choose to ask how much something cost it shouldn't be just so they can repremand me two seconds later. I'm not a child.

    19. Aww thankyou so much I hope she will stop acting like this one day

    20. I think it's a hobby and a creative thing so I never would think that.
