When the doll comes before the character....

Oct 19, 2012

    1. My Angel Region MSD was from a Secondhand owner (who is my friend) and I asked her of her personality or the character and basically she was there to be a company to her other doll; Zoey. So I don't know if the character came before the doll or the doll before the character. It's like saying what comes first the chicken or the egg. The first owner explained that she is very tomboy, not into the whole feminine thing (even though I did go for the mod breast implants, which that came before the doll)

    2. I'm not really much of a character creator person in general. I might have a certain idea for what I want them to look like. Plus, I think you can get ideas about your doll(s) based on what kind of feelings they give off, or quirky things they might do, like how they are strung affects their movement. My doll's arms always seem to swing open when I pick him up, so to me, he seems to like hugs, or being held. It would feel weird to me to assign a specific character to him.

    3. This is pretty much the same as me, but worded way better than i probably would have explained it hehe :P
I tend to really like a certain sculpt and plan out a basic look (fashion and style/rough faceup colour palette/hair colour) and the rest comes later when they arrive. I've planned a few doll characters beforehand but i find i'm not that good at it ;~; The doll usually ends up not matching the character or i can't think of very good stories lol. I'm hoping i can start to develop more in depth stories with my incoming girls so i can feel a closer bond with them and think of more photo opportunities that match them :) But i think whether you plan the character or not they will usually show you the sort of personality they have with their looks and how they turn up in photos.

    4. I decide first who will the new doll be related to from the ones I own already, and build up stories and concept from it. I often have nothing, not even a name, until they arrive. I think I really need to know the doll better for couple of days before I make up stories for them..

    5. None of my dolls have characters, only a name

    6. At first, I really wanted a doll to personify an rp character I'd made up. But then I found a favorite sculpt and I thought that was that. But now that I think about it, the sculpt looks nothing like my character would. And where I was originally gonna call it done, I've now over thought it and I'm changing him to another character I'd created that fits him more. As much as it makes me sad to not have my fav. rp character come to life, but I feel the sculpt that I absolutely love and have my heart set on fits another. So ultimately I'm getting my dream doll, just not my MOST favorite character?

    7. When I really think about it,I start out buying a doll because I already have a character in mind. But that usually changes after I get the doll because the character I had in mind didn't quite mesh with the actual doll. So,the character sort of develops over time.

    8. With my girl, the doll came before the character. When I found her sculpt, I began to think of a name for her, and as time went on I started filling out her personality. Usually I see the doll and then make their character. :)

    9. I have to say my dolls characteristic comes after I shoot several photos, they just come out with their own individual personalities.

    10. i'm the worst person ever when it comes to characters, i have none, never have, i like pretty things and that's basically it, i see a doll i think looks pretty and i buy it (if i can) and i enjoy taking photos of them to try and capture that.

i am just as bad with names >.>

    11. I'm not a writer (I'm an artist but I don't have any 'characters' per say); I'm like starzzz, Kittymutt, and x3Ashley. Not much of a character creator, for me it's doll first, character later and maybe a small backstory eventually.
My doll and all future dolls have/will come before the character and I don't really have a problem with this. I buy a doll because I like the doll and let her/him show me their character, name, personality, style, ect as I get to know them more. The sculpt/facial expression doesn't have much to do with the doll's personality in my opinion as a face-up can easily alter that, I see how it could play a role in that but it doesn't in the case of my doll(s). I guess what I want a particular doll to be is ultimately decided by what I want and what I feel best represents the personality of that particular doll. Honestly I'm still trying to figure out most things about Nadeko's character but I'm not in a rush to find out. Their style has to be something that I like but that isn't to say that all my dolls will have the same style, they'll have whatever style suits their personality best (it just won't be anything that I personally dislike). I sort of have an idea of what I want some of my future dolls to be like but it's not a concrete plan and I'm not too bothered by the idea that it may not work out the way I imagined when they actually arrive.
I choose the doll that I want and then let the doll show me their character/personality after they arrive.

    12. I'm definitely a ''doll before personality'' type of person. Since my dolls all live in the same story, after I got my first doll characterized it was easy to find ways to fit the others into it. Sometimes a character idea will pop into my head and I'll look for a sculpt to match, but I usually just buy whatever doll I'm into at the moment and find a personality for them that fits in with the rest. For example, I found myself wanting a Yo-sized doll and came up with a general type that I'd want. Once I found a doll I liked, I looked into finding a name and personality that fit both the doll and the story- and now I have Greta! My other girls went precisely the same way.

My primary focus is having pretty dolls that I love. The characterization is secondary to me, more-so a general guideline for names and clothing styles than a deciding force on what doll to get. I think the only aspect of a doll that I search specifically for is whether or not they will clash against the physical aesthetic of my other dolls. For example, my dolls are mostly built with 'classic' MSD/Yo-SD proportions. A DC wouldn't fit anywhere in there without looking odd. My Littlefee barely blends in.

    13. Yeah, my doll has no story at all. He's not here yet, but I don't plan on giving him a back story. I'm not good with that type of thing anyway.
