When your doll room is your bedroom (and your home office, and...)

Feb 22, 2022

    1. Hi everyone!

I share an apartment with two roommates, so I keep all of my dolls in my bedroom. I don't have them "out" very often, so most of them are in their boxes in my closet or under my bed. Due to the pandemic, I've also been working from home for the last two years, so I spend a lot of time in one room!

      Two questions:

      1. I know this might be overly paranoid, but are there any possible adverse health effects to spending a lot of time in a room full of resin...? I can't smell their resin odor, nor am I sanding/modding them or anything, but they're a lot of dolls in a small room, and I do sleep above some of them :sweat:sweat:sweat:sweat

      2. For people in the same situation: do you enjoy having your dolls around you all the time, or does it feel too crowded? Has it prompted you to downsize your collection or limit your collecting so you have more space?

    2. As far as I know, there's no health dangers from being around resin so you (and I) are safe there. :)

Being in the same situation, I kinda like having my dolls with me. It has limited my collection (I've reserved two shelves on a bookshelf for them and so far I've stuck to it) and that's probably best for my wallet. :sweat

    3. I live in a studio apartment with my partner and all my dolls out on shelves. I have felt crowded and have my SDs in a storage unit because of it, but all my MSDs and smaller are with me. It makes me more aware of space when purchasing dolls. I'm more choosy now.

    4. Currently living in a single room as well, I have all my dolls around (with most of them in a single display case). Personally I love being able to look over and admire them at any time and I don't feel anymore crowded than me and my boyfriend having to shove all our important stuff in here in the first place.

We have our giant shelving unit with attached desk and his computer, our queen sized bed, a single chest of drawers, and the doll case all in the room so defiantly feel the "everything is in the one room" feeling, but again, I never feel like the dolls make it anymore cramped than everything else already makes it feel, and being able to gaze upon them at anytime is relaxing for me.

    5. I think it kind of depends on how big your collection is. I have 4 SDs and it's no big deal at all to have them out in my room. I enjoy seeing and posing them, and they fit on a small section of shelf. Obviously if someone's collection is large that might not be possible or comfortable. There are so many factors... size of the room, amount of other items, personal preference.

For me keeping all my things in one room is about being choosy and more importantly, playing room tetris to arrange things in a way that doesn't feel cramped *_*

    6. No longer living in a single room with my dolls, but I was when I started the hobby. I shared a small bedroom with my husband that barely had room for a bed and a chest of drawers in it, but I managed to set up a doll bed in a corner, and my crew hung out there. It wasn't just BJDs, but other fashion dolls and collectables. I installed a long shelf above my bed and had the other dolls there and on top of the chest of drawers. At most, I think I had 5 MSDs while living there. I couldn't bear to keep them in a box, so I had them out all the time, sometimes out in the den with me.

    7. I keep all of my dolls in a display case next to my computer setup in my home office. :) It’s just 7 dolls (4 tinies, 2 tall YOSDs, 1 MSD). If I had 7 SDs, it would be a different story. My dolls match the pastel color theme in my office, so they’re very much part of the decor, lol!

Back when I was still living with my mom as a college student, I had my office setup in my bedroom. I only had one doll at the time, and she was displayed in a bookshelf. It was pretty crowded in that bedroom with all the furniture.

    8. I live with 1 roomie in a 1 bedroom studio apartment with 2 cats, so my space is preeetty small. Atm I don't have any of my dolls displayed out, since I'm still re-arranging some things and in the process of getting proper display cabinets for said dolls. So right now they're all stuck in their box-coffins xD. Still, I have a little bit of room to display 1 out of my 3 dolls on my desk...I just have to make sure I put her away before I go to bed. I'm still paranoid that my cats will do something reckless to them when I'm not looking, even though they aren't interested in them during the day.

My small space has also made me keep my doll collection on the small side, so it kinda helps to keep my impulse in check :XD: Great for my space, but still terrible for the collection I've already formed in my head, aha. It's definitely been an interesting challenge so far to strike that balance of dolls vs. display space.

    9. Polyurethane resin is completely harmless when cured. Unless you're planning on sanding or casting doll parts, you have nothing to worry about. :)

I keep all of my dolls in my bedroom. It's a safe, dark, and cool display space for when I'm not interacting with them. It doesn't bother me at all; to be honest, it makes me feel more secure, especially as a lonely person that's been single for a couple of years now. :sorry

    10. I rent a room in a house belonging to a woman who does not approve of collecting dolls. We don't get along in other ways either, so I keep everything in my bedroom where she can't see them or comment on them.
I have about 20 BJDs now, in various sizes, including 8 SDs. I keep them on two shelves in my book case. I also have Barbies, Monster High, Liv dolls and Beanie Babies. Those are all packed away due to space limitations. I don't mind not seeing the non-bjd dolls all the time, but I want to keep my BJDs out where I can see them. They give me great joy and also help with depression. I tried putting some of the MSDs away in boxes and it drove me crazy, so I got them back out after only a week.

    11. I have a lot BJD's and used to keep them in a shelf thing away, but now I bought this great (let me know if people wants recs) cabinet from IKEA that fits all my yo-sd, about 24 MSD and 8 (10 if I squeeze) SDs. I do tend to have 5 or so dolls out at anytime. I keep my room door closed when people come over, but I don't hide the hobby (just how many I have haha)

    12. Similar situation here- I share a duplex with three housemates. I bought one of those dorm-style shelving units with little cubbies that goes atop a desk (open in between, for your computer and such) and my dolls that can sit live there. The rest occupy a bookshelf near my bed. It’s never claustrophobic to me- quite the contrary; I like having them so close!

    13. Most of my dolls were purchased second hand so I've only experienced "the new resin smell" a few times & never worried about my dolls gassing me. ;}
My bjds are in the bedroom as it's the best low light place for me to display them. Fortunately my husband isn't disturbed by my choice of room decoration...some of our friends have assured me they could never sleep in a room where there are dolls!?!? Which means they're out of luck as the dolls have begun multiplying in the guest room as well...
Like others have said, I love having them out so I can see them. And it's been good for curbing my accumulation habit because it did begin to get crowded & overwhelming (just before the guest room became available) XD
I bought a desk/table with an attached upper shelf which gives me three levels for displaying standing SD dolls. That much dedicated doll space feels just right for me & I can easily see them all (well, the back row of the group under the table is a bit hard hard to see...). And after 13 yrs of slowly accumulated resin, I'm not aware of any side affects from sleeping in the same room with 40 bjds. But another small chest with 10 more near the bed was just too many for me. Good thing I decided to redo the spare room... :)

    14. I can't personally say that there's no effects from resin smell, though I've been living with dolls for a good 19 years now and I don't think I've had any adverse reactions to the resin, question mark question mark question mark ??? I mean, I have chronic migraines (born with them, they aren't doll related) and I've never noticed either the new dolls I've bought or the 2nd hands to add or subtract to that issue. Can't talk about any possible long(er) term issues since I'm not there yet. Suppose I can look back on it when I'm approaching 100 years old and you have to pry my dolls from my cold, dead hands, haha.

      I also live in a small studio with no "doll room" to speak of so my entire apartment is dolls. Dolls in the living room, scattered between glass cases and open shelves, dolls in the "bedroom" doing the same, dolls in the closet, dolls everywhere. I love them, they have all become part of the decor (displays are set up where possible etc) so you pretty much get smacked in the face with dolls the moment you step into my place. I share my place with my adult daughter and she has her own collections going on of things so it's a mutual whatevs with us (plus, she grew up with bjds and every time I think I might be going a little nuts with them, I have my enabler who cheers me on. Contributing to the chaos I suppose, that's how we work xD). I don't think I would know what to do with myself if I didn't walk in to an apartment full of dolls actually, 19 years of it has become my way of life ^^;

    15. Most of my dolls currently sit on a shelf high up in my closet, simply because I don't really have space that isn't, like, directly next to a window atm :') Husband and I are currently saving to buy a house, so hopefully I'll be able to find a nice space with lots of room to display my dolls. But! Right now I'm obsessed with my Gokidoll Miaow so they're sitting next to me and I put them away every night after I'm done playing around at my desk :') Currently I'm contemplating taking one to work and sitting on my work desk, since my officemate thinks they're actually pretty cool, but I'm paranoid that someone will break in and steal it or something lol

    16. My 3 dolls sit next to my desk. They have their own chair. :-) I work from home office and it is nice to have them around. When their chair is needed (guest come over) I even ask their permission to take it for a couple of hours. :sweatThey can take my bed until their chair is back.

My family always liked them so it has never been an issue to move them around. They often 'took' half of the sofa in the living room.

    17. We currently live in the master bedroom of my sons house, all of our things are crammed in here. My husband collects lego, diecast fire trucks and other odds and ends. We have 3 tall bookcases, 1 short one, a tv stand with a skinny bookcase on its side on top of it and an open bookcase in this room with a king size bed and a recliner.
It is a good size room, but I have had to really cut my collections down. I stopped collecting playline dolls and got rid of all but two of those (Skullector Monster High which is more collector playline) and I got my bjd collection down to three 1/6th scale dolls (with a 4th on the way) and one 1/8th doll and a few other odd things I collect that can all fit on one bookcase.
I prefer to have a smaller collection and I tend to buy and sell until I find what I really like, and once I am satisfied, I enjoy that as long as I can until I feel ready for something new.
It used to make me feel guilty that I do this, but I have come to accept this is what I do and I like that I have gotten to check out so many different types of dolls and things over all these years.
I really like having my whole life in one room. I am content to spend my time off in here, sitting my comfy recliner, staring at my pretties on the open bookcase right next to me :D
If I were to work from home I could easily move one of the bookcases out of here and put a desk in its place with some shelves above it. I don't hide my collection and neither does my husband. When we had our own houses/apartments our collectibles were either in dedicated hobby rooms or wherever we could fit bookcases in the house to display things.
We have moved states several times and I had to sell everything a few times because everything wouldn't fit in the car to get to the new state. I feel my collection now is small enough, and the dolls and things themselves are small enough that I could easily fit them in a big box and not have to sell them when we move again in a few years.

    18. Resin is only toxic while its curing/ still liquid! Well, just don't eat your dolls. I like to install shelving onto the walls so my dolls can literally "hang out" but that may not work if you are renting.

    19. The resin well cured doesn’t affect

I also keep my dolls in my bedroom/office :XD: sometimes is kind of hard keeping things clean and in they’re right place more when I want to take some pics and I have to do the “diorama” but i won’t complain, is my personal space <3
