Where do all the cheap dolls go?

Aug 7, 2011

    1. When I was buying my Apollo, I wasn't planning on experimenting with modifications, or anything extra. When I was deciding where to buy him, I had looked into Junkyspot as well as DDE because I didn't want to wait like I would with going directly from the company. Junkyspot and DDE has an NS Apollo (with face up) available up until the time I actually was saved up. Then he was out of stock both places. I ended up going with the company directly, which took 2 months.

I think a lot of people know that these dolls are relatively inexpensive (when compared to most other dolls), and when you consider the extra money required to get them directly from the company, that can seem like a lot if the doll only costs $150. It might not seem like too much if your doll is costing $600. So, people look at the MP to see if their doll is already in the US, and by doing this, they get the doll faster, and maybe for a little less.

    2. I think most of it is sentimental value. Someone might have a very strong bond to a "cheap" doll because it was their first doll. I personally like the BBB/RS molds and already have my mind set on a BBB doll being my first. I would also be more likely to try my hand at faceups and modding with a doll thats $100-$200 opposed to a $400+ doll. ^_^

    3. I think this generalizes by price just as much as the assumption that cheaper dolls aren't worth selling. Buying a doll isn't about the price, it's about liking the doll. I've never met anyone who bought an expensive doll with any intentions of reselling it. It all comes down to what you can afford and what you really love. An expensive doll just happens to have the added bonus of getting more money back than a cheap doll if you end up wanting/needing to sell it at some point.

    4. I think they DO get resold, just don't stay on the MP long. Almost every "cheap" doll I've resold was on the MP for less than a week. My last RS I let go was sold in 3 hours! So I don't really think it has anything to do with sentimentality or losing money.

    5. Im not soo sure but. Most of the time I check those threads that sells dolls, they need the money for a certain situation or maybe problem financially. Soooo MAYBE, those more expensive dolls would give them more money that they are in need of compared to a doll that you bought for a less expensive price, it will be sold still as a less expensive price. ;/ Thats part of it, the other is that they dont want the doll anymore but i doont see much connection with that *pout*...

    6. I see TONS of RS/BBB on the marketplace, but never for long! Like DollZone, I mean, my DZ Annie I bought secondhand for ยฃ100. She was literally up for sale for 10 minutes before I snapped her up, and I love her! She's yellowed, but to a VERY nice tone, and honestly, in my experience, a lot of cheaper dolls are of higher quality than more expensive dolls. I was very disappointed in my Soom, especially after getting a RS a few weeks later which had nicer feeling resin, and posed better out of the box!

    7. I wouldn't sell my then cheap DZ doll and soom doll simply because I know they wouldn't sell. That is the simple reason, really :)

    8. I sorta went through this when I was trying to sell my doll leaves lilith. I modded her a lot but nothing major that look bad I think I did a good job but idk if I should still try to sell or just keep her as my little work of art, because I find my self considering lower my price considerably to try to sell her. On the other hand my resin soul mei was cheep when I got her but I can't seem to find a dolls face I like better than hers I even purchased her a minifee body so now I guess she worth a lot more lol:) I could never sell her not because of the money but becase she has bonded with me a lot since gettin her.

    9. My first doll was a RS Ya, and I'm more attached to her than I am to my more expensive DF-A doll. Although he would probably still be considered "cheap" in some circles. I'd sell Mr. Handsome (yeah, he doesn't even have a real name yet...) off in a heartbeat before I even considered parting with Faith, my RS. The cost doesn't have anything to do with it--it's just the way she makes me smile every time I take her out of her box.

    10. I recently saw someone selling a Resinsoul body on Tumblr, and my boyfriend and I picked up a secondhand Bobobie recently, but otherwise, I suppose there is a relative lack of secondhand 'cheap' dolls out there.

Honestly I think it's probably because of a lot of things, but as someone pointed out, cheap dolls probably go a lot faster and well... if I were going to sell a doll I probably wouldn't bother with one of the cheaper ones, because it just wouldn't be worth the trouble to me for the amount I'd be able to get for it...

    11. There are lots of less expensive dolls on the marketplace. Obviously because they don't cost as much they would go faster. I'm hesitant to say cheap because I have a "cheap" Resinsoul and it's really sad that people call them cheap as though they're not as good as any other BJD sculpt available. Doll-leaves are more expensive but still on the lower end with Resinsoul and they aren't called cheap. Just because a doll isn't your cup of tea doesn't make it bad.

    12. Once dolls are here they're usually here forever. I ended up with a family of primarily "cheap" Dollzones by chance. My beloved Xavier would have been what ever brand his face ended up being, we entered the DZ photo contest and got the twins, X wanted a wife who was a Dollzone, their children needed to look like them. The oldest daughter is a Dollzone who came with a free promo baby to be her doll and I bought a baby dragon body because I wanted one.

Price wise I'm not going to spend four figures on a doll or a pricey brand anything, electronics aside. When I sell off topic dolls it's usually because I'm done with them or they've been rerooted because I took their stuff. All on topic dolls were researched, planned, and saved for so I don't see myself selling them off because I can't bond or no longer like them.

    13. "Cheap" just means inexpensive though - it doesn't need to mean "bad". And the RS dolls genuinely are less expensive than the vast majority of BJD options (the comparison with Doll-Leaves doesn't really work since many of their dolls are 2-3x the cost of the equivalent RS/BBB dolls - some of their basics are a little cheaper, but overall they're in-line with the prices of most of the mid-range companies).

    14. I'm in the camp of that if a less expensive doll ends up on the MP, it gets snapped up like hotcakes because they are so affordable. I have seen many members on the forum who comment that they cannot afford a doll/saving/wanting one of the more affordable brands or others. I do see the Bobobies/Resinsoul/Miro Dolls etc floating around but never for long.

    15. Maybe I've been too hardened by the hate that RS sculpts get outside of DoA. Usually when I see someone talking about a cheap RS it's because they think they're of bad quality or a "beginner doll" because of the price ( which I never saw the stigma in that. What's wrong with spending a little less money for a hobby you're just getting into ). And the RS minis and DS minis are close in price... RS MSDs are around 140 and my DS mini was 159. Not that different in price at all.

    16. My first doll was a bobobie, and that is why even if I left the hobby, he would stick with me. These dolls are often the first choice because of their lower prices, and I've heard of many doll owners who would never sell their first doll because their bond is the strongest with them. That would be my best guess. Also, even though BBB/RS dolls are inexpensive, every BBB/RS I've ever seen, whether in person or online (except for bobobie's horrible site pictures) has been gorgeous. Why sell a beautiful doll?

    17. Agreed. They're getting better at the photos though. They tried with Qing.

    18. True enough. I was thinking of the DL tan Maya boy that came out last year (I'd considered buying that one) and at over $300 he was more than twice the cost of the RS/BBB minis.

To be fair though, before the bodies were re-designed, the old RS bodies did have some engineering issues, so I think some of the quality comments may have been about that rather than anything specific to the price. I have a hybrid on an old RS body, and I've frequently thought that the main positive there is the price, because it's certainly not the engineering or the detail! ;)

I also think that when it comes to visual presentations, it's not always a comment about the company itself as it is about the effort that the owners put in. Most of the really awesome RS/BBB dolls I've seen (and there have been plenty) have been from people who either did really impressive modification projects or who did very impressive work with the face-ups and costumes. Regardless of the cost of the doll, I've found that the most impressive things I've seen have been an investment of some kind - if it wasn't the base cost of the doll it was the time/effort (or commission costs) that were put into them afterwards.

Whether it's a $1700 fullset that someone bought or a $120 doll that someone put dozens of hours into, there's generally an investment of some sort on display - it's ultimately not necessarily a comment on the selling price of the doll itself.

    19. by chance are you meaning a bobobie body? because even the RS single jointed bodies aren't so bad, some actually prefer them to the new double jointed RS dolls. I personally don't mind the BBB boy body but the girl body is a little less appealing and RS single and double jointed dolls are great.
I think pretty much what people are saying here is all true if a inexpensive doll hits the market it usually is snatched up pretty quickly. I see them all the time on Ebay, Flikr, Facebook and the MP..not only RS and BBB but occasionally impldoll, and Doll Leaves which for the most part are compareable in price. I know I've sold a few of my RS dolls but some of them I don't think I would ever part with because their characters are my originals..though I supose if it came down to needing money for some type of emergency then well at least the less expensive dolls will be easy to just repurchase from the company at a later time.

    20. Welllll... Maya was a limited... so you can't really expect him to be too close in price to the RS basic minis.... he's even more than the other DS minis... Understandable but you can't really compare.
