1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

where do all the old dolls go?

Jul 28, 2011

    1. Not going to answer all the questions. JennyNemesis did a good job of explaining for the most part.

What I have to add is not just that in the threads/gallerys are people focused on 'New Shiny', it's the same for doll meetups. People bring the new doll, for everyone to see. If for nothng else but you get the added 'oh I've never seen one in person before' sort of thing. While you may get that same 'I have never seen one before' for an older/discontinued mold, you then have to deal with telling them, 'It's old discontinued, and may be diffecult to find in the secondary market', and the disappointment that goes with that.

    2. Thanks for the welcome back. Just wish I felt excitement for the Mythdoll, as she is the mate to my DollZone. I may try a new faceup, but she may be too anime looking for what I want.

    3. I own a Domuya Sophie, although not exactly 'old' the company aren't around anymore (I'm not quite sure when they disappeared, but they were definately still around in 2009) I still photograph her, and post pictures (just not here on DOA) However she is second hand and her body is quite yellow. I'm quite gutted actually, I was planning on buying some clothes and a new flexi body from their site lol

    4. Loving reading these answers, this is a very interesting thread! I agree with you JennyNemesis and VampireAnneke thats what seems to happen. However when I have found a discontinued doll I love I tend to obsess about it, look it up, dig up old threads, get the old galleries resurrected for a few days etc... Sometimes I have eventually found the doll for sale and got one second hand, either that or the threads get pushed back again for the newer doll chat and pictures until someone else does a similar thing.
But over all I am just interested in where these dolls are, what active members still own them and their opinions of them now after years of owning them. Souldoll is just a good example of how sculpts have changed over time.

    5. Do you own any sculpts that are over five years old and not sold anymore?

      Yes, several.

Do you still photograph them and put them on DOA?

I occasionally post them on other boards but not DOA.

Have you recently bought an older sculpt second hand?

No, but I would if I found one I really want.

What state are these dolls in now?

They're fine. The resin has mellowed a little but they're in good condition otherwise.

Do you own old doll sculpts and don't put them on the forum, why?

Honestly, I don't think anyone would look at them so I don't bother.

    6. This is a pretty interesting topic, going along with JennyNemesis, you could definitely chart the growth of this hobby like an exponential curve...so there will be many more people who get into it based off newer sculpts who might not known about or be interested in the older styles.

In addition, people who have been in the hobby for a while and might own these older dolls might have simply changed focus or moved onto other things. A member who was an unmarried college student in 2005 might have some very different priorities today, and they might not include being very active here.

Do you own any sculpts that are over five years old and not sold anymore?
I know one is over 5 years old, but it's still being sold.

Do you still photograph them and put them on DOA?
Occasionally. Photography was never really my "hobby thing".

Have you recently bought an older sculpt second hand?
Both of my dolls are second-hand. I did look for second-hand bodies to match the age.

What state are these dolls in now?
Still in the same condition, or I maintain them as usual. I haven't been actively looking for a new doll in a long time, so my two are it. There's no new doll to distract me.

Do you own old doll sculpts and dont put them on the forum, why?
n/a, since I don't generally put them in the forum anyway. I don't really think much about the age of my dolls. If I get the urge to post a picture, I will just do it.

    7. Interesting topic. I guess with all the new molds and companies some of the older dolls just get lost in shuffle. When I joined I remember the most exotic dolls were elves.

Do you own any sculpts that are over five years old and not sold anymore?
A few actually. Issac (AoD Mo), Jack (CH Zephrose), Sally (SouldKid Marion) and Lily Rose (Orientdoll So Vampire Ui). They were all made before 2007 with the exception of Issac who was made in 2007.

Do you still photograph them and put them on DOA?
Not as much as I want to. Issac still gets the occasional photo shoot though I rarely post the results.

Have you recently bought an older sculpt second hand?
Yeah. My last two SD dolls (Mimi and Link) were purchased from second hand shops in Japan. They were both made in 2007.

What state are these dolls in now?
The same. I try to keep them nice. New face-ups, re-stringing, keeping them out of direct sunlight, you know, basic maintenance.

Do you own old doll sculpts and don't put them on the forum, why?
I don't think my photography skills are very good so I rarely post them. Besides I doubt there are many clamoring for photos of my Volks dolls and my Shiwoos.

    8. Do you own any sculpts that are over five years old and not sold anymore?

Yes, I actually have two SD13 Megu girls. When Volks first started "renewing" their default molds, Megu 13 (the grown up version of 4 sisters) didn't make the cut. She only exists in oldskin now and is fairly uncommon.

Do you still photograph them and put them on DOA?

I did for a time, but lately.. there seems little point. Threads featuring a mostly unknown mold don't get viewed often, and as an artist I thrive on feedback. If no one cares to look, why should I put my heart into creating something and taking the time to put it on the forum?

Have you recently bought an older sculpt second hand?

I wouldn't call it recent, but both my Megus I bought secondhand here. I always keep an eye out on the marketplace for them, I can simply never have too many of this girl. I'll see one or two up sometimes, but the price is usually very high because.. well, Volks.

What state are these dolls in now?

I'd say they're both in fine condition. They don't look like they've aged a day, and it makes me wonder why Volks changed the resin.. their old stuff was pretty fantastic.

Do you own old doll sculpts and dont put them on the forum, why?

Yes, for the reason above (no one's interested in seeing them) and because I just don't have the time to invest. If I get a really fantastic inspiration, I'll usually create it and only show close friends and family. It's just too much trouble to present my work to the forum most of the time.

    9. Do you own any sculpts that are over five years old and not sold anymore?

Yes, If you consider most of our dolls in this house arent new molds. We have 2 Old Dollshe SA saints one tan and one whiteskin. 2 Iplehouse Soo Ri's (one gentle one normal),an Iplehouse Lion, A DoT Lahoo and Shall. The Shall and one saint were bought in 2006 and the others in 2007. So yes we do have at least two that are 5 years old +

Do you still photograph them and put them on DOA?

Not really. I haven't had much time, and I find a lot of the older doll threads get buried pretty quick!

Have you recently bought an older sculpt second hand?

Not too recently but we did pick up a School A and the Lati Chaim Head, both of which are rather old.

What state are these dolls in now?

Very well loved! Our saint has yellowed but he still looks lovely and our DoTs have mellowed into a beautiful peachy color. Our soo Ris and Lion are now very yellow but are stil evenly colored and asll still pose like a dream and fill us with happiness everytime we look at them!

Do you own old doll sculpts and dont put them on the forum, why?

I usually never have time to put them up, since I dont get a lot of photographing time.

    10. This is really spot on Scarlett!

    11. I guess i'm unusual in that i've always tended to covert many of the older/more obscure molds then the the shiny new fullsets. Many of my dolls are 5 years or older - Dollshe 77 Bermann (2003), Elfdoll wu (2005 but still sold), Volks Yukinojo (2005), Volks Ver 1 Michele (2004), Kanon Yui (some time pre 2005) and Iplehouse Louis (2006, I think - I got him pretty soon after he was released, back when he was the third ever doll Iplehouse ever made). Some of my dolls are newer, but are new editions of old sculpts, like my F-05 and Khoya. My two most recent purchases (made this year!) have been a Miwadou Saiki both and Lovelyhouse Shincho, both of which were long sold out.

In many ways I really do prefer older sculpts to alot of the newer dolls coming out. I just like the old school (?) BJD style I guess. There are many other older sculpts I'd love to own and browse the market place looking for regularly, for example i'd sell my soul for a Dollti Wooyan, CH st Damien, discontinued volks f-13 or one of the old old happydoll boys by Inheungsa like Ein or Aiden.

So there definatly are those of us around who love older dollies, buying them when they come up on the marketplace and preserving them, making sure they don't end up in the bin! :)

    12. One person who just joined the forum found her doll in an "Antiques Mall" type store, secondhand. It is incredibly rare but apparently it does happen.

    13. Do you own any sculpts that are over five years old and not sold anymore?
Yes. My oldest in 2004 and I bought her new from Volks.

Do you still photograph them and put them on DOA?
I do! I also take them to meets.

Have you recently bought an older sculpt second hand?
Nope, I tend to buy dolls from the company (all of my dolls are from the company even my older girls)

What state are these dolls in now?
Very good shape. I make sure the are well maintained ^_^

Do you own old doll sculpts and dont put them on the forum, why?
Not really. I do not post a ton, but I am pretty even about who gets posted.

    14. None of mine are that old, and even my first is still being sold... I think I tend to like the ones that are popular now, LOL! But I think everyone above is right, there are lots of reasons you don't see them. People's lives and priorities can change a lot in 5-6 years, and they may just not be taking photos as often. I've only been in the hobby since late '08, but I don't take nearly as many photos as I used to, there's just so much to do!

I think that maybe you see them less often in the marketplace because the ones that were going to be sold HAVE been sold possibly more than once, and many of them have probably ended up where they're staying by now. For every doll owner that likes to constantly sell their older dolls to buy new ones, there's one who never sells a doll once it arrives (most of us are somewhere between those extremes), so most of the collection-cycling owners have sold the older ones on by now, and every doll that's ended up with a non-selling owner is off the market. And with fewer of the older ones existing, there just will naturally be fewer of them up for sale.

    15. Do you own any sculpts that are over five years old and not sold anymore?
      SoulDoll Paris
      SoulKid Aru
      Volks Jun Tachibana
      Volks MSD Midori
      Volks MSD Enn
      Volks Ushiwakamaru

Do you still photograph them and put them on DOA?
I do still photograph them, but they usually don't make it to DoA.. I never posted a lot on DoA since my threads seem to get buried fairly quickly.

Have you recently bought an older sculpt second hand?
I got my SoulKid Aru a couple years ago, and my Ushiwakamaru was bought on the MP within the past year.

What state are these dolls in now?
SoulDoll Paris - Great condition - the resin hasn't hardly yellowed at all, and his body actually still matches his spare hands! I really miss the older, more stable resins...
SoulKid Aru - yellow! Like, lemon-y yellow. She's in the process of getting fixed up, but is taking a while
My Volks dolls are all in great condition. Very little yellowing, if any.

Do you own old doll sculpts and dont put them on the forum, why?
I have never received a lot of responses to gallery threads I have started, so I tend not to post a lot of photos on DoA. Every once in a while I will post photos in photo request threads, or the size specific threads.

    16. Do you own any sculpts that are over five years old and not sold anymore?

I own some Volks Oldskin dolls, the old F-28s, that are the new F-16. That mold used to be the hottest thing out there. I still think my dolls are beautiful, but they are in boxes right now because I love my mature-looking sculpts and their characters have since moved on to updated forms.

Do you still photograph them and put them on DOA?
I think a few of my threads have these older dolls in them.

Have you recently bought an older sculpt second hand?
Nope. i think just my taste has changed. The only 'old school' weakness I have is Nono. Whenever I see a Volks Nono go up for sale I usually haunt that thread.

What state are these dolls in now?
Even my oldest doll (2002) is still in wonderful shape.

I think the older sculpts haven't gone byebye, but these dolls aren't like comic books. I've noticed that dolls with an older look do not command super high prices in most cases, and often their bodies are not as posable and refined as newer dolls. Price versus sentiment, its probably difficult to take $300 for your favorite first doll.

    17. I know I answered the thread already, but I just wanted to respond to this...

In our local area, we love seeing the older dolls. There are a few of us that love the older dolls and are super excited when one of us gets one.

For example, one of my friends is currently in the process of purchasing a CH St. Mina. I am so excited to see her! <3 I know she's most likely not one I will own, but I can still enjoy her.

If there is a doll I really, really want, but is extremely rare (i.e. Ushiwakamaru), I know it's only a matter of time. I was fortunate enough to get mine at a great price here on DoA. I never thought I'd find one within my budget, but it can happen! ^_^

I guess what I'm saying is, just because they may be difficult to find, doesn't mean its impossible. :)

    18. Do you own any sculpts that are over five years old and not sold anymore?
I still have my first doll, a Tanning Lishe from Luts.

Do you still photograph them and put them on DOA?
I don't take pictures of my first two dolls that much anymore, the reason is because I've had them a long time and I've taken thousands of pictures of them, I'm sure. Now I take pictures of the newer dolls.

Have you recently bought an older sculpt second hand?
      Nope.

What state are these dolls in now?
I can only speak for my Tan Lishe, she's 5 so she's a little loose in her string, which can be fixed no problem. Her face up is fine. I've looked after her well.

Do you own old doll sculpts and dont put them on the forum, why?
Same reason I mentioned I have newer dolls that haven't had the years of attention she has had, being my first doll. I focus on the newer ones now.

    19. Do you own any sculpts that are over five years old and not sold anymore?
The ones that come to mind are Volks Kohya who is my profile here and my pocket fairies. Some others are no longer made such as my Unidolls or I am not certain of their age such as my Orient So dolls.
Do you still photograph them and put them on DOA?
I have had not had the time to do that much so not even newer dolls have been posted here. But I do plan on doing so in the near future.
Have you recently bought an older sculpt second hand?
      No.
What state are these dolls in now?)
Pristine or in some cases even better as they've had professional faceups, posing mods and or blushing. If any have yellowed it is very slight.

This is a very interesting thread.

    20. As so often happens, JennyNemesis said exactly what I would have said, only better. :abow: I have very few sculpts newer than 2006, and it's always a great day when I can bring home an older BJD.

Do you own any sculpts that are over five years old and not sold anymore? You betcha. Custom House Gene (before the re-Romanization to "Jin"), Jun, Rock, Han, Bin, Sia, Shaman Varim, and St. Mina 2. Volks Lady Sylvie, Ryo, F-08, Yukinojo, Sakaki (first release), Michael (Dark Prince), Emma. Minawadou Saiki (artist head). Unoss. DollTi D and Ahz. Unidoll UH-06 (hmmmm, he might be within the five-year window, but he definitely isn't sold anymore). Dollshe SA Bermann and Hound. Luts/CP Elf Shiwoo. DIM Danbi. Souldoll Gunun. Hypermaniac Omiclon. And that's not counting the "old" dolls that are still in production: my 1999 Volks Four Sisters, for example.

Do you still photograph them and put them on DOA? I tend to post photos on DoA when a doll first comes home; after that, I use LiveJournal more heavily.

Have you recently bought an older sculpt second hand? Oh, hell, yes. Older sculpts, secondhand, are almost all I buy these days. This year: a Volks F-08, a Volks Lady Sylvie, a Unidoll UH-06, a DIM Danbi, and a Custom House St. Mina 2.

What state are these dolls in now? Excellent--why wouldn't they be? The two French resin dolls have yellowed, but that's the natural process of aging for their material. I guess this question rubs me the wrong way because it seems to invite the assumption that "old" BJDs must, by definition, be deteriorating or damaged . . . and I get so very tired of seeing that assumption perpetuated on DoA, where I'd like to think people know better. :sweat Though maybe it's good that you asked this, honestrabbit, because so many people are spreading the word via this thread that their "old" BJDs are looking fine and are all set for a long lifespan!

If you own old doll sculpts and don't put them on the forum, why? I always put my dolls in the Databases, but when I post pictures of my "old" BJDs in the Gallery, the crickets deafen me. At this point in DoA's history, the majority of members signal pretty clearly that they just aren't interested in earlier BJDs, and that makes sense--people recognize and want to see dolls that are on the market now. I still tend to think of myself and my dolls as newbies in the grand scheme of things, so, hmmm, maybe my frame of reference is a little skewed. ;)
